an excerpt
‘Hi Darling, I’m home,’ his voice sounded weary even to his own ears and his wife certainly noticed as she looked up from her bowl of cereal.
She stood and hurried to him as he hung his coat on the hooks by the front door, reaching her arms around his chest she rested her head on his back and smiled. He turned and raised her chin to enable him to kiss her. This had become a daily ritual for them and was one that they both enjoyed; it seemed to reinforce the bond between them.
‘Come on, into the kitchen, your breakfast is nearly ready and I will pour your coffee,’ said Mandy with a smile up at her husband.
He thought for a moment of pulling the tight bow that held her housecoat together but she had turned for the kitchen before he could act. Instead he watched her bottom as she crossed the room and then followed.
Sitting down at the worn table he stretched and rubbed his eyes. It had been a long nightshift and all he really wanted to do was go to bed, but his wife enjoyed their homecoming ritual and he loved her too much to deny her that small pleasure.
With a sigh his eyes swept the small, shabby kitchen. “She deserved so much better,” he thought as his eyes took in the peeling paint on the cupboard doors and the ancient cooker where his Mandy stood cooking him cheap bacon. His eyes strayed to her bottom again and he smiled to himself. They might not have much but they were happy.
