Beyond the Pale
an excerpt
Josh wakens slowly, slumber peeling off him in layers, as his body fights against the drugs in his system. He floats to the surface of consciousness, slowly, so slowly, as if hung with weights. After seconds that drag like days his eyes begin to open to the world. Light creeps into his eyes, a soft low light, that helps pull him out of his slumber. He opens his eyes fully, sees a ceiling, white ceiling, turning clockwise, the room spinning, walls rushing past him. He closes his eyes again and fights against the nausea. Vertigo, dizziness and weakness assail him in his drug induced state. He has never been so heavily sedated, had never felt the weight of ages sit on his limbs as it does now. Josh knows he cannot fight against that weight so he relaxes his body and lets it rest. With his eyes closed the nausea passes slowly allowing him to begin using his mind.
He remembers the dream. Not the dream of his past, the dreams he has always but the intruding voices ringing out in his dream, the hollow, whispering voice that seems to float out of the corner of his mind and that great booming voice that calls from above everywhere and everything. The voices were telling him about prisoners and being ready, the warning voices from above and within that called to him in the night.
