BASEBALL!!! IN SPACE!!!
an excerpt
He was standing out by the pitching mound of our playing field, out in the dust and the grass. Like he'd started walking and then turned back when he saw me coming. He was skinny and pale, not like any of the rest of us. He didn't look like a ball player, hell, he didn't look like much of anything to me.
He raised his hand to wave, a limp little flutter of his fingers, and I could not figure for the life of me what our owner thought he was doing sending me a little boy like this.
"Hot day," he said, when I got close enough.
I stopped, one hand on my hip. Looked him in the eye good and long. He met my stare at first, and I saw he had green, yellow-flecked eyes. Green eyes, soft white skin, hair the color of the dirt under our feet. No way this kid belonged out here. There was money behind him, and lots of it.
