Wandering Realities
an excerpt
“We could play cards.” The voice cut through his thoughts once more, pulling him away from the book.
“Hm?”
“Cards. We could play them.”
He looked at her. She seemed dead serious.
“Do you have any cards?” He asked.
“No. Do you?”
“No.” She looked blank for a moment, and he was sure his face had the same expression.
“We could pretend we had cards?” She asked, a tone to her voice that wasn't quite hopefulness. It was more... a desperate need for entertainment.
“But then we would always just pretend to have the winning cards.” He said, simply.
“But it's no fun if everybody wins?”
“Would you lose a card match on purpose?”
“Er, no. That would be stupid.”
“Well, I wouldn't either. So there you go.” She shrugged, and resumed staring blankly ahead of her. He resumed reading his book.
“Besides, we don't have a table.”
He gave up. It was easy to see he wasn't going to get through his romance novel on this bus ride.
“A table for what?”
“For the cards. You can't play cards if you don't have a table.”
“You also can't play cards if you don't have cards.”
“Right. That's my point.”
