Excerpt: The Oddlings
Prologue
We were strange and we were beautiful, and we were born from a chemical sea. We floated in our plastic placentas, and we waited for someone to let us loose from our confining sleep, to let us awaken and live out our gloriously brief lives.
They loved us at first--for who would not?--but slowly, they grew to fear us. They feared us not for our capabilities, but for our limitations. We were not so destructive as they, and so they looked upon our feebleness and gentleness with disgust.
But we could not let them destroy us.
