an excerpt
“What have you done, Papa?” she asked, her forehead wrinkled with concern, laying a hand over his.
“I’ll find away around it, Florie.” He put his other hand over hers, looking earnestly into her eyes. “He won’t have you.”
For the first time since her father had come through the door, Florence's heart thumped with fear. She felt it pounding, the wild beats almost painful, and found that she had to struggle to find her voice.
“Papa, what do you mean?” she asked slowly, only too aware of the cracks and wavers.
“He doesn’t know where we live.”
“Papa!” Ruth exclaimed. Her eyes were wide and her face had gone white. “Papa, what have you done?”
“Papa,” Florence said softly, hardly able to hear her own words over the furious beats of her heart. “Who is ‘he’?”
“Oh, Florence.” He looked into her eyes, his brows knit. “I’m sorry.” He shook his head slowly. “I stayed with a man during the snowstorm. As repayment,” he paused. “He wants you, Florie.”
Florence’s world crashed around her. She could hear the cracks and crumblings in her ears as everything faded from focus. She struggled to breathe, gasping. She retracted her arm, holding it tightly against herself.
“And I said yes.”
It was an unnecessary addition. Florence could hear nothing but the blood rushing through her body.
