“Hey James,” I greeted him cheerfully that morning.
“Hey Ali,” He said surprised that I was the one greeting him instead of the other way around like usual.
“How was your break?” I asked.
“It was great. Thanksgiving's always been my favorite day. I love turkey,” He laughed. “What about you?”
“Same, I just hung out with Kadi the whole time,” I said.
“You guys are still best friends?” He asked surprised.
“Of course, why?” I asked.
“I don't know, I just never thought you and Kadi seemed like you would be friends.” He said.
“Really? Why not?” I was curious now. Why wouldn't me and Kadi seem like best friends?
“Well, you're just so different.” He observed.
“What's so different about us?” I pried. It seemed like a good way to find out what he thought of Kadi.
“Well, you're quiet, and shy, even around people you've known for ages,” He teased, “while Kadi is just crazy around everyone, whether she just met them or has known them for ages.”
“Which is better?” I asked.
“Well, it depends,” He laughed. “You know Ali, I think this is the most you've ever said to me.”
“Well you said it yourself, I'm shy and quiet,” I said.
“Yep,” He said smiling at me.
“So which would you prefer, an outgoing girl, or a shy quiet girl?” I asked.
“Well, with the outgoing girl I'd always be guaranteed a date that wasn't boring,” He answered. “But with the shy, quiet one, if she talked to me I'd know she felt comfortable around me, which to me would be more special than having the outgoing girl be comfortable around me.”
“So, which one?” I asked. I was surprised he was actually telling my any of this when this was our first real conversation.
He paused for a second thinking, “Why do you want to know?”
I blushed. “I'm just curious.”
“You've never been curious before,” He said skeptically.
“W-well,” I started stammering. This was why I didn't talk much, because there was always a point where I wouldn't have any clue what to say and just get tongue tied.
He laughed, “Sorry, I didn't mean to put so much pressure on you.” He shook his head and smiled at me. “Do you really want to know?”
I nodded.
“The shy, quiet one,” He said.
“Okay, so you're saying, if you had a choice to go out with me or Kadi you would pick...”
“You,” he said without hesitation.
