Synopsis: Untitled Fall Project 2009
This is an extremely episodic novel, each of its thirty chapters being essentially a self-contained short story. My protagonist begins with amnesia and wanders a strange world, getting himself entangled in lots of odd adventures.
Excerpt: Untitled Fall Project 2009
I woke up on a hill, my face turned toward the sun. I think that was what had woken me, the sun shining upon my face, charring every so slightly my eyelids. I sat up and looked around. I had not expected to wake up, so wherever I was, I was happy to be there. I smiled.
Far to the north I could see Aburkash, to the south the town of Brikern. To the west there were two hills. To the east there was a gargantuan grub.
I got to my feet to see it from a different perspective. Surely it could not be that big? But it was.
I had nothing else planned for the day, so I began to stroll in the direction of the grub. Coincidentally, the grub was moving in the direction of me. This brought us together, at which point I realised the grub was being led on a leash by a tiny man. He stood beside my knee and looked up at me. In turn I looked up at the grub.
“Where are your clothes?” said the man.
I looked down at myself. “Oh, sorry. I hadn’t realised. I didn’t mean any offence.”
“No offence. I was just curious.”
“My clothes swallowed me, and then I found myself here.”
He shrugged. “These things happen.”
“Do they?” I asked. “Do they really?”
He shrugged again. “They do around here.”
I nodded. “So I find, if I am honest. Still, it is irksome.”
“I can see you are irked.” He pointed at his grub. “My friend David is taking an interest in your nakedness. It is possible that you remind him of a lady grub. I recommend clothing yourself as soon as possible.”
I looked up at the salacious grub. “How can you tell?”
“David twitches.”
“I see.” I looked around me. The landscape was unsurprisingly bare of vestments. “Do you have any suggestions?”
He looked up at David once more and shrugged. “I would suggest running for the nearest town as quickly as you can. He just twitched again.”
I paused for breath and began to run to the south. David let out a seeping groan and began to crawl after me.
“Keep running!” called the little man. “You should be alright as long as you keep going. He is persistent but slow.”
I waved my thanks without turning and showed him my heels.
