Excerpt:
Yvonne smiled cruelly at her friend Laura. “It must be mortifying for you to come over here, begging me to leave your man alone. Of course, if he were really yours you wouldn’t have to ask to leave him alone, would you?”
“I’m not begging,” Laura replied.
“That’s too bad. If you were begging I just might agree to let you have him.”
“Okay, I am begging you. Please don’t take Eric away from me.”
“That doesn’t look much like begging.”
“What do you mean?”
“You’re standing up. Traditionally when people beg they get down on their knees.”
“If you think for one second that I’m going to…Oh, what’s the use? You win.” Laura knelt down in front of Yvonne, in tears. “Please, please don’t take Eric away from me.”
Yvonne laughed. “I can’t believe you just did that. You must really be hot for this guy. Now get up. You have no idea how pathetic you look, do you?” Laura did not say anything, although in actuality she knew exactly how pathetic she looked. She stood up.
“So, what’s your answer?” Laura asked hesitantly.
“As touching as the sight of you debasing yourself like that was, it just wouldn’t feel right to just give Eric back to you. After all, he’s a grown man. He has the right to decide who he’ll be with.”
Laura was furious. She could not believe that Yvonne had just made her demean herself for nothing.
Yvonne held up her hand to silence Laura. “Please, Laura, hear me out,” she interrupted. “Like I said, it wouldn’t be fair to just give him to you. But I’ll tell you what I will do. Just because we’re such good friends, I’ll give you a chance to win him back.”
“And just how do you propose that I ‘win him back’, as you put it?”, Laura asked, although she already knew what the answer would be.
“Simple. We go into my backyard and have ourselves a friendly little wrestling match, just like before. If you win, I break up with Eric and he’s all yours. If I win, he’s mine, which he already is anyway. So you see, you’re really getting the better end of the deal. I don’t know why I’m so generous to you. So, what do you say? Do you accept the bet?” Yvonne held out her hand.
Laura only hesitated a moment before shaking Yvonne’s hand. “Yes, I accept. So when should we have our little match?”
“For your sake I think we should have it right away, before you have a chance to chicken out. How long will it take you to go home and get ready?”
“That won’t be necessary.”
“You want to fight in that?”
“No, but I know how your mind works, so I came prepared.” Laura unbuttoned her blouse. Opening it, she revealed a black bikini top.
