I met Viktor just a few weeks after graduating from college and moving to New York City. I was working as a receptionist at the office of Dr. Klein—a job that fell into my lap through Steve, my stepfather, who is also a dentist but in Long Island. Because Dr. Klein was more of a personal friend than an employer, he took interest in my future and let me take some Fridays off to go to interviews at jewelry stores, art galleries, and show openings. Because Dr. Klein was more of a personal friend than an employer, he paid barely enough to cover my share of the rent and the college loans, but provided excellent medical and dental insurance package. I switched to a more expensive brand of birth control and assumed my post in the office with a bright smile to demonstrate my excellent bite that thanks to Steve now helped Dr. Klein to satisfy his customers.
