Melodia Della Neve
an excerpt
I yawned loudly as I walked up the stairs to my room. Cliff diving sure could knock the energy out of a person. I turned the knob to my door and sluggishly stumbled inside. I shrugged my jacket off and sat down on my bed, the sheets were pulled back neatly and the pillows were exactly where they belonged. Just how I liked it.
I pulled my converses off and fell back on the bed, I bounced once and the bed jiggled beneath my body,it eventually slowed to a stop. Now what?
It was still light out so I didn't want to play my guitar, my creative juices seemed to be at their peak after nightfall.
I could watch a movie. But which one? I rolled off the bed and landed on my hands and knees. I crawled to my wall of shelves and stood up so I could see my movies properly.
“The Matrix,Star Wars, Remember the Titans...Finding Neverland.”
Finding Neverland sounded fine.
As soon as I grabbed finding neverland a bug flew off the shelf and I ducked, “What the-” I watched the spastic light bug fly around my room, it crashed into the lamp on my nightstand, then it fell to my bed.
I walked over cautiously, it was a tiny bug with long wings, i'd never seen anything like it. I crawled up onto my bed and stared at it. I just murdered a...a...hmm. what was it? Closer inspection suggested a fairy. “Tinkerbell?” I snorted and looked at the movie in my hand. “One too many fantasies for you young man.” “Are you dead little bug?” I brushed a wing with my pinkie finger and nothing happened. “Hello? I'm sorry little bug.” I pushed down on my bed with one hand and then put my other hand by the bug, it gently fell into my hand and I scooped it up. “What kind of bug are you? A firefly? Yes a firefly...a human shaped firefly?” I asked aloud incredulously.
The little human had very blonde hair and dark clothing thats all I could tell. I needed a magnifying glass.
It moved and I heard faintly the jiggle of many bells. It groaned and put a limb...a hand to it's face. My breath caught in my throat and I held it watching terrified. It opened it's eyes and blinked twice.
Then it screamed.
It exploded in my hands in a shower of sparks and shimmer I sheilded my eyes and the room erupted with a shrill scream. I added my own hollor of fear to the noise and found a sudden weight on my body. I removed my hand from my eyes quickly and saw the most beautiful girl i'd ever seen in my life sitting in my lap. Our eyes met briefly and then she rocketed away from me. I fell backwards off my bed and heard a crash, it sounded like hundreds of cd's falling on top of each other. I sat up and looked towards the sound.
She was pressed up against my wall, the cd's scattered around her on the floor. I let go of my shirt, which I had just realized I had been clutching. she turned around walked through the mess awkwardly to my one window. She pulled on the blind cord and they shot up.
I just sat there staring at the blur of a girl at my window stunned. My brain was having trouble catching up with the fact that she had just appeared out of nowhere.
She fiddled with the window loudly,
“Wait!” I cried in alarm, she meant to jump out of my third story window.
She fumbled with the window all the louder”No,no” she shook her head violently, her voice barely above a whisper.
I started pawing at the ground looking for my glasses”No wait,” I crawled about frantically.
“Is this place a prison or what?” her voice was quiet but shrill, I could tell she was panicking.
I laughed shakily, “No, my mom painted the outside of the house and forgot to tape off the windows.”
“I know she did, but I didn't think the paint was glue! Why did she use glue?” she cried desperately.
I stopped and sat up, “Wait, how did you know she painted the house?”
“I-I” she started studdering.
“You were here?” I asked.
She pulled back her fist and was about to break the glass and I bent down again to look for my glasses one more time. My head hit the corner of my bed “Ouch!” I mumbled feircely. I rocked back on my heels and rubbed my throbbing head. I hadn't heard glass breaking so I tilted my head to see if she was still there. She was. She crept closer and knelt down beside me.
“Are you ok?” she asked concerned. She brushed back my hair and immediately the pain was gone, replaced by a tingling icy chill that ran clear down my spine.
“I'm fine.”
“You're bleeding.”
“I am?” I ran my hand through my hair and sure enough, there was a spot of sticky hair. “What did you just do?”
“Oh.” she gasped. “I didn't mean to-”
“Who are you? What are you?” she stood up and I reached for her retreating arm. I caught her but she pulled free, putting my glasses in my hand in place of her arm.
I fumbled with my glasses and turned around just in time to see her running down the stairs.
“Wait!” I scrambled up and ran after her. When I got to the hallway though she was gone. Disappearing just as quickly as she appeared.
I had just met a fairy. Not just any fairy, a fairy spy. Who was she spying on me for? I had to be careful, I guess I wasn't the only mythical creature left after all.
