“What exactly are you hoping to do here?”
“Get away from my life for a couple days.” Denis turned and looked at Sophie as they turned into the apartment complex. “I just needed to escape to think and make some decisions.”
“I know what you mean.”
“Unless you owe a bookie fourty-thousand dollars, I don’t think you do.”
“What was that?” Sophie thought he might be making another joke, but the look on his face wasn’t the same as earlier. He was serious. Deadly serious.
“Sorry, nothing.” Denis tried to ignore it, but Sophie had heard him quite well.
“You owe someone that much money?”
“Yeah, I do.”
“What for?”
“Gambling, drinking, parties, whatever.”
“Wow, that’s a big deal.” Sophie was shocked, to say the least. She had no idea that this was even possible.
“I thought that only happened in movies and tv shows starring big Italians.”
“No, it happens in real life to Swedish-Americans.”
