an excerpt

“Mark Phillips.” The deep voice of the man filled the room without even trying. As he spoke he placed a file on the desk that Mark had not even noticed him reach for. “You were born to Michel and Sara Phillips in Deupont Michigan. Your mother died when you were twelve leaving you to the loving if violent embrace of your father, who turned to alcohol to fill the void in his life. You had your first run in with the law when you were fifteen, having been caught shoplifting at a local grocery store. You served community service for that one. You kept your nose relatively clean until you turned eighteen and you dropped out of school. Two months later you were busted for car theft. The judge gave you a break, either four years in jail or joining the military. You choose the military, and thus began your less then illustrious carrier as a solder. You received several minor disciplinary actions but you were still able to reach the rank of Sargent first class. Until one week ago when you were dishonorably discharged. The finding was conduct unbecoming of an officer. A trumped up charge when you really should have been charged with attempted murder of your commanding officer but they had no real evidence. Did I leave anything out?”

As he was speaking, the whole time, his eyes remand locked with Mark's and his voice never changed pitch or volume. He waited for an answer a smug look on his face, as if he expected Mark to deny everything. Instead Mark let a grin split his face. Everything Mr Dresden said, if he was Dresden, was easy to find out with a computer and a hacker, and he was sure Dresden could afford a good hacker, if he was not one himself. “Nope sounds like you covered it all.” He would have sprawled out on a chair had there been one available.

“There is one other thing.” Mr. Dresden began, setting back into the leather chair he was in. “A secret you have been keeping for some time.”

At this Mark was instantly alert. With everything else this guy knew he should not have been surprised that he might know about that. He had never told anybody about it and he was not sure how to react now.

Reading Mark's body language Mr. Dresden knew he had touched a nerve with him. Smiling inwardly he did not let his enjoyment at that show on his face. “Relax if it was not for that secret you wouldn't even be here right now, facing the chance of a lifetime.”
