Murders are certainly not unheard-of in the town of Travis, of course, but this particular incident stood out, mainly because it was just vicious. The body was found early on a Monday October morning, in a drainage culvert down on the south side, out behind Nicholson Elementary. Yeah, kinda a rough part of town, but damn, still… We normally see maybe a dozen murders a year in Travis, and even the worst, they aren’t like this, not butchered. And not for no reason at all.
Anyway, like I was saying, they found the body early on a Monday morning. A school lunch lady was comin’ in to work and spotted it. Normally, she probably wouldn’t have noticed a body layin’ on a pile of dead leaves and pine needles in the bottom of that culvert, because you have to leave the sidewalk and go over near the edge to see down in there, and it hadn’t been there long enough to start to stink. What she saw first, though, and what made her muddy up her off-white nurse shoes walking over for a closer look, was the blood. It was spread all over the concrete wall of the culvert’s far side, in some places spattered, and in others more thickly.
The body itself was less distinct as viewed from the top edge of the culvert, but easily recognizable for what it was. With the amount of blood and entrails visible, there was no question that it was a corpse, not an injured person. Lunch Lady’s stomach was cast iron, though, and, maintaining her stoic composure, she went inside and called the police and then her supervisor.
