Synopsis: The Mute Ghost
Georgianna Mayfair, called George by friends, just wants to lead a normal life as a high school sophomore, but, with a group of quirky friends, two parents with jobs that require long hours, and a half-brother that can barely even talk, things aren’t going so well. And not to mention that her dad died when she was in the seventh grade.
However, any degree of normality in George’s life will soon disappear. When she moves into a new – well, not so new, seeing as it was built in 1902 – house, one weird thing after another starts happening: strange noises in the middle of the night, random objects being moved when she hadn’t moved them, and finally, things levitating.
Soon enough, George figures out that the house is haunted. The restless spirit – a girl about George’s age – is unable to speak, other than the occasional ghostly moan. Understandably, both girls want the other out of “her” house. When George decides to take matters into her own hands, she discovers something that could change her life…or end it.
Excerpt: The Mute Ghost
From Chapter Six:
Up in the attic, I didn’t see anything, but the ghost was definitely up there. I could tell, because the floor was creaking even though I wasn’t moving. I was freaked out, and felt frozen. But I wasn’t going to chicken out on that. I had completely forgotten about trying to study; there was no way I could focus on schoolwork.
I tried calling for the ghost.
“Oh, ghostie,” I said, just quietly enough for Mom and John not to hear it. “Are you going to come out?” I heard the floor creak, and I jumped. I wanted to cry, I was so scared. My heart was palpitating, so I started singing to myself.
Out of nowhere, my flashlight went out. I was puzzled as to why, since I hadn’t used it in a long time, and I thought the batteries were fairly new. I tried shaking it and flipping the switch, but it wouldn’t turn back on. A strong wind started blowing through my hair, as though I was outside instead of in my own house.
It’s happening, I thought. It’s going to come out.
An orb of light appeared, and although I wanted to scream my head off, the light was absolutely mesmerizing. The orb started getting bigger and bigger, until it was about my height, maybe taller. I stepped back, until I was completely flat against the wall.
Finally, I saw something I never would have expected to see: a girl about my age. She was a purely silver figure, but I could tell sort of what she looked like. She was a little taller than I was, but not as freakishly skinny. Her hair was more of a silver than the rest of her, so she must have been a blonde in life. But what freaked me out most was her clothing. From what I could tell, she was wearing a v-neck sweater with a cami underneath, and a pair of jeans. She had to have died recently in order to be wearing something like that.
As she started floating toward me, I felt nauseous.
Oh my God, I thought, without remembering for a second what Charlotte had told me. I’m going to die. The world seemed to start spinning as she came within three feet or so of me, and before long, everything had gone completely black.
