Living for You
an excerpt
Aimee finished the glass and rinsed it in the sink. A yawn escaped her and she smiled to herself. Drinking warm milk hadn’t failed her yet. As silently as possible, Aimee trudged upstairs to her waiting bed. This time, she fell asleep when her head hit the pillows.
Three hours later, her alarm clock was demanding that she wake up and face the morning. Groggily, Aimee’s hand groped for the incessant beeping of her alarm clock. Finding it, she hit the Snooze button, falling back into sleep seconds later.
The beeping was back again with a will an incredibly short five minutes later. Grudgingly, Aimee crawled out of bed, concentrating on the alarm to wake herself up. When she was sufficiently awake, she turned the alarm off. Aimee stretched, yawning widely. Rubbing at her eyes, Aimee stepped into her bathroom. The coldness of the tiles woke her up slightly as her toes curled in response to the chill.
Aimee quickly washed her face and brushed her teeth, standing on the tips of her toes to avoid the worst of the chill. She changed into a baby blue shirt and jeans warming herself up by moving around.
Downstairs, she greeted her mother and grabbed a cup of coffee her mother had brewed. Two cubes of sugar and ¼ cup of milk. Just the way she liked it. She checked to see if she had everything. Backpack, coffee, keys.
“I am leaving.” She called to her mother before exiting the house. The sun was only beginning to peek out in the east as she headed for her car. Stifling a yawn, Aimee started her car and began backing out of the driveway.
When she parked her car in the student parking lot, she looked for Nick’s car. He hadn’t arrived yet. Cutting another yawn off, Aimee turned the engine off and pulled out a book to read. She decided to stay in her car until Nick came.
A couple minutes later, Nick was knocking on her car window, rousing her from her nap. Aimee grabbed her backpack, keys, and coffee.
“Hey, Nick,” she greeted lethargically.
“Good morning, sleeping beauty,” Aimee smiled at him and took a sip of her coffee, thankful that the cup kept it warm for her. They walked into the building together, mutually complaining about how little sleep they got.
