Twin Rivers
an excerpt
I read somewhere once that “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” Considering that most of my life is unknown to me, I think I have every reason to be afraid.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As I rushed out of the library, the images of my three friends dying were flashing through my head. My accident was bad enough, but how do you explain four accidents within a year? And why was I the only survivor? What was going on?
The twins flashed through my thoughts, and instinctively, I turned in the direction of the river. Somehow, I felt that the river and the twins must be related. There were dark forces at play here, and if someone didn’t figure them out soon, I feared that another death would be imminent.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I glance over her shoulder out the window, and notice that it has begun to rain.
And there, wearing all white as if they dressed up for this occasion, are the twins. They are dripping wet as always, but tonight it appears they are closely related to everything that is going on. They each raise an arm, slowly, and point directly at me. I can see their lips move to form a single phrase, “Get out!”
