Synopsis: Murder at Penworth
At the end of the 1890s, an aspiring young investigator, Winston Douglas, longs for nothing more than to become a brilliant detective. Teamed with the "brilliant" Dr. Westgate, Douglas embarks on his first investigation - the death of the butler at Penworth Manor. On the way, he discovers the hilarious tangle of scandals between all involved and the unconventional way in which Douglas eventually cracks the case.
This is a comedic look at the detective fiction genre. From a Sherlock-gone-bad rogue to a Miss-Scarlet-type who mistakenly believes that she committed the murder and continuously attempts to botch the investigation, this satire provides lots of laughs at our favorite Agatha-Christie-esque stories and weaves a delicious web of murder and discovery.
Excerpt: Murder at Penworth
“Here!” I would declare to Westgate, the most brilliant man I knew. “Here is the clue! This proves that he was murdered… by that man right there!” and I would point to the sweetest, most unassuming man in the room.
“What?” everyone would gasp. “No! It couldn’t be. It could never be Williams!”
“But it was!” I would persevere, knowing that if I was wrong I would look ghastly idiotic, but knowing that if I was right I would look brilliant. Positively brilliant. “It was Williams! And do you know why?” I would ask, patronizing everyone present.
“No!” they would say, yearning for my answer, my wisdom, my brilliant deduction. “Tell us!” And Williams himself would begin to look shifty, looking for an escape route.
“It’s simple, really,” I would begin. “All you need to see is this!” And I would pull from the dead man’s coat a pocket watch.
