Prologue

Three shadows past through a mysterious forest. They were hopping from tree top to tree top. It was a mission that they had to complete but it didn’t go has planned.

“How the hell did this happen?” asked one panting.

“And I should know how,” snapped the other one.

“Both of you shut-up,” growled the last.

They all were pretty beat up and just wanted to get home. There were two males and one female. They all had cuts and bruises like they were in some kind of fight. Truth be told, they were in some kind of fight. The woman of the group had blood running down her arm and bleeding cuts on her face. She didn’t really look that bad. The one man of the group had blood running down his arm and leg. He also had bleeding cuts. The last man managed to get away without much serious wounds but got his fair share as well. Pretty much they were all pretty banged up in other words.

“I just can’t wait to get home to my comfy bed,” grumbled one of the men.

“My little girl better be doing good,” thought the woman.

They stopped talking after a while and decided that they’ll get home faster if there was no talking. The woman sighed and started going faster than the other two. She wanted to see her little girl. No matter what it took. Unfortunately, destiny (or fate) didn’t have that plan for her. The enemy that they were fighting jumped out in front of the trio and attacked them. They stopped and got into a fighting stance.

“Can’t they just leave us alone? They won,” all of them thought.

“We can not allow the enemy to leave alive,” said the leader of the little group.

“WHAT?!”

“We are the ninja that protect the land of Shadows. We will do anything to make sure that it stays safe,” said the person that is probably the leader.

“Try us then,” growled the woman.

One of the ninja managed to sneak up behind her and threw a shuriken at her from behind. The woman gasped and fell to her knees. The other two hurriedly killed the one ninja and they others took off. They needed to kill the two others but only two of them were there to confront the three foreign ninja.

“Hang in there, Ai,” one of them said holding her hand.

Ai just stared at them with tearful eyes. She begged with her eyes. She wanted to see her little girl but somehow that, now, wasn’t a possibility.

“Rin,” she said taking deep breaths. “Please watch over my little girl. She needs somebody to take care of her. Somehow I think my best friend would be the best choice.”

With those words, Ai closed her eyes and slowly stopped breathing, knowing that her little girl was safe with her best friend. Rin had tears in his eyes but held them back knowing that no matter what he was going to do . . . a ninja would not show weakness when on a mission. He dropped her hand and nodded to the other ninja.

“Yahiko,” he said. “Help me carry Ai’s body to our village.”

Yahiko nodded and helped to carry her back. When the arrived, it was chaos. The medics raced to them and noticed that Ai was dead. They took her off of their hands and Rin knew he had to do something. Standing, just about a foot away from him was Yuki. Ai’s little girl. She was only about five at the time. He closed his eyes and opened his arms to the child. She had tears flowing down her face and jumped into Rin’s arms. They both cried together that night.

“I’m so sorry Yuki,” he said. “I wish I could have done something.”

“It’s okay Uncle Rin,” sobbed Yuki. “Mommy told me what might happen but I never figured it would happen to her.”

“I promise Ai,” he thought. “I’ll never let anything happen to Yuki. She’ll never become a ninja like you did. I’ll make sure of that.”

Chapter 1 – Eight Years Later

Eight years later, Rin held true to his word and never let Yuki become a ninja. Though she was persistent so he taught her some things about being a ninja but never fully trained her as one. She knew how to defend herself and to throw weapons if need be. Yuki, know 13, had grown to be a beautiful young teenager. Rin was proud of her and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Uncle Rin,” said Yuki walking through the door. “I’m home!”

“I figured!” he said back to her walking into the living room. “How was school?”

Since Rin wouldn’t let her become a ninja, Yuki went to a normal school for normal people. Though Yuki was anything but normal. She made a funny face at him and stuck out her tongue.

“That bad huh?” he asked chuckling.

“The test was horrible! I officially hate math,” she said dramatically and flopped onto the couch.

“You should be in the drama club,” he said and sat down beside her. “You’re pretty good at acting.”

“Wanna know what the next play is?”

“What?”

“It’s about . . . NINJAS!”

Rin sighed and patted her head. She growled at him and he stopped with amusement in his eyes.

“I think you should try-out for it,” he finally said after many seconds of silence.

“Wha . . . What?” stuttered a shocked Yuki.

As far as she knew, anything Ninja was out of the story. She looked at him with confusion in her eyes.

“I can’t keep you away from Ninja’s forever Yuki,” he answered.

Yuki smiled at the thought. She wanted to be in that play, but since now her “uncle” gave her permission . . . she was definitely going to try to get the main part.

“Thanks Uncle Rin,” she said and zoomed upstairs.

Up in her room, Yuki started practicing on what she was going to do to get the main lead. She wanted it because it was almost like how her mother was and that it is on the same day her mother died.

“I hope you’ll be proud of me mother,” she thought and practiced harder then she ever practiced before.

Rin watched her in her room. He was amused by how much she wanted to be in this particular play. He wondered if it was just in her blood to do so. She is free-spirited after all. Rin sighed and went to do some of his own practicing. If he thought about it or not, he’s still a Ninja in many ways, shapes and forms so he needed to be in tip-top shape everyday. He hated it when he had to go on missions and left Yuki by herself.

“I hope I’m doing the right thing Ai,” he thought. “I hope you’ll be proud of your daughter.”

With that last thought, Rin walked to the training room to get some of his training in. He wondered, one last time, if what he did was the right thing for Yuki.

“Darn it!” cried Yuki.

No matter how hard she tried, Yuki couldn’t seem to be able to memorize this one particular line. She tried, tried and tried some more but never was able to memorize it. She sat on her bed and sighed. There goes the lead part.

“I guess I can’t do it,” she thought looking up at the stars. “I’m sorry mother. I meant to try my hardest for you but nothing seems to make you happy. Maybe I should just give up and quit.”

Yuki blinked in surprise. She just thought the line that she couldn’t memorize.

“I did it!” she cheered and said the line many times over.

“I can’t believe it!”

She ran down the steps and jumped into her Uncle’s arms knocking him backwards.

“Oof,” he groaned. “What’s the rush Yuki?”

“I did it!” she shouted. “I was able to memorize that one stinkin’ line!”

“Congratulations Yuki. Now please get off.”

Yuki laughed in embarrassment and slowly got off her Uncle Rin.

“Sorry Uncle Rin,” she apologized.

“It’s okay Yuki,” he said brushing off the dirt on his clothes. “This just means I need to sharpen my skills a little more.”

Yuki frowned at her Uncle. She hated it when he doubted his skills.

“Don’t worry Uncle,” she said. “Your skills are just fine. I’m just sneaky!”

“Sneaky like a fox,” he said chuckling.
