An A.E. Mystery - Case of the Prank Call
an excerpt
Quick lunch write up, initials used. I keep forgetting what their names are. It's just easier to use one letter and fill the proper names in later!
Lunch consisted of egg salad, stone ground wheat bread, celery and pickles on the side and unsweetened tea.
J grimaced painfully, “What is this stuff? No offense! But.. what is this?” He begged to know as he held out the bread bag.
A looked at it, looked at him, “It's bread.”
H laughed, “Just eat it and hush.”
He eyed it warily, “What.. is it.. like, is it healthy or something?”
A glared at him, “Will you just eat it and be quiet? When you get back to your place you can eat the stuff I refuse to let you eat here, till then.. eat or starve!” She put on a false scolding attitude and tried to not laugh.
He pretended to cower and said “Yes ma'am”
A few bites into the sandwich J's eyes lit up, “This is spectacular! How come you never buy this at home, H!?”
H tossed him a quick glare, “Buy you what exactly?”
Through mouthfuls of egg and pita, J tried to explain how it'd be much better if H cared about what he ate. Explaining that good lunches and healthy, yet tasty, bread was always welcome in his stomach. J stated at great length that he'd always made sure H knew that was the kind of food he always wanted to be eating.
Then his eyes suddenly watered up and his face contorted in pain, egg salad almost fell out of his mouth. He swallowed, “What did you do that for!?” As he leaned into the table to rub his shin.
H shrugged, took a sip of tea and smiled sweetly “My foot slipped, sorry.”
A nearly choked on her tea from laughing, “I'm not gonna take you guys out to dinner tonight if you're going to behave like this in public!”
J and H laughed with her and promised to behave if they got crayons and paper at the table tonight.
A nodded, “That's better!”
