The Chasm Between
an excerpt
Teaser----
In a world of sameness and familiarity, one girl sees the problem. One girl sees past the veil of normality to the higher powers at work hiding the truth in her world. One girl sees the need for change.
And her sudden insight is all an “accident” that those in power could have prevented.
Punishment awaits those who are dissimilar, and she has felt the sting of defeat twice. Can she shatter the bonds of restraint and learn what it means to be different…to be independently dependent? Will she be able to comprehend the deceit and break through the encasement of the glass box that has imprisoned her for her entire life? Has someone before her discovered the truth, or is she the only one? And will the girl crack as the truth is revealed, ultimately destroying her chances of impacting those around her for the better?
Excerpt----
She stifled a grunt as she pushed up on the trap door. The hinges looked old and rusted, the wood starting to decay. She wasn’t surprised that it wouldn’t budge, but she needed to keep moving. The security guard would surely hear all of the noise she was making…
Suddenly, the wood collapsed around her hand. Grumbling quietly, she swung her bag behind her back before stepped onto the next rung of the old ladder and shoved on the door with her shoulder. Hinges squeaked and wood cracked as she wedged her elbow between the rotting ceiling and the rotting door.
Finally, Tynan pulled herself into the attic. She froze in awe; myriad books filled numerous shelves. It looked like an ancient library. The records of the town must have been stored up in this long-forgotten room, left to age.
Standing to her feet, she carefully shifted her weight, waiting for the creaking that was sure to accompany any movement. However, the wood seemed stable and unshifting. Her fear of discovery began to fade as she looked at the covers of the books. One book on a shelf in the far back of the room stood out; it was bound in black leather binding with The Wisdom of Many embossed into the spine. Her fingers itched as she glanced at the trap door with slight trepidation before silently slipping the book into her bag.
