Excerpt: Darling Gummybear

I stared out into the field where an old hollow tree stood. An owl made residence in the tree. The sun had set an hour earlier leaving the night to awaken along with the owl.
Soon, like every night, the owl would swoop down out of the tree. The mysterious owl would fly toward the woods that stood a mile away from its home, and though I’d never witnessed this, I knew the owl would come back after hunting.
I sighed from the heart. The owl was going to be one of the million things I missed this broken summer. I sat at my desk directly beneath my window. Two weeks away from the world I loved. I felt so alone. Looking out to the vast night sky, I wished I could fly home like the owl.
“I’ll name you ‘Agnes’.” I whispered to the owl I couldn’t see. “Goodbye”. I slide out of my seat and into bed. After this night ended and I woke up, I would go to my detention for two weeks. Or years – it might as well be. Rolling to the left, I tugged the blanket over my head. With my eyes closed, I willed myself to sleep so I could face the grotesque challenge.
