“Get off me! Put me down!”
It was only upon hearing this that Aaron came back to his senses. He had been fighting off more of the Warlord’s servants in a daze until then.
Looking up at where the black gryphon was stood waiting, he could see the evil king with the helpless Tamara in his grasp.
Thinking fast, he ran off and jumped down towards the courtyard. Just as he had predicted, the winged chargers were stood among his injured comrades and a few of the little imp-like demons. Aaron chased the monsters away and thanked his lucky stars that most of his associates were still alive, even if few of them were not so lucky.
He leapt up onto the nearest stallion and set off at high speed after the Warlord’s gryphon, unaware that some of the monsters he had chased off were now pursuing him.
The horse gave a startled whinny as one bit it on the tail, while Aaron cried out as he slashed at the others with his dagger.
The commotion caught the attention of the Warlord, who seemed more annoyed than concerned about the situation. He shot another lightning bolt from his hand, this time aiming at Aaron’s mount.
The horse awkwardly reared up in mid air as it was hit. Startled, Aaron dropped his weapon and watched it fall to the ground, its blade glinting from the stray beams of moonlight.
By now, the stallion was frantic as it desperately attempted to free itself from the relentless demons. Try as he might, Aaron couldn’t regain control of the frightened beast and watched the gryphon fly away, the Sky princess in tow.
One of the monsters bit at his wing, sharply snapping a bone. Aaron screamed in pain and clasped a hand on the appendage. However, as he did so, he released his grip on the horse and found himself sharing the same fate as his precious dagger with no way of flying back to the castle.
He had felt the rush of the wind in his ears many times before whenever he soared and danced in the air. But this was a forbidding rush felt by those falling to their deaths, not the pleasant rush felt by someone simply enjoying themselves.
The angel dived ever further, through the clouds, until he could see the ground world in more detail than he ever had. Despite the darkness, he could see large groups of trees as well as rivers and mountains and buildings. He instinctively spread his wings out, wincing as the broken one instantly filled him with pain.
“It’ll all be over soon,” he reassured himself to try and take his mind off it.
Now he could see the land in even greater detail, in particular the large clump of buildings that were stationed directly underneath him. He curled up into a ball, closed his eyes, and braced himself.
The inhabitants of one of the houses woke to an almighty crash as Aaron fell through the roof and into one of the bedrooms.
“I’m alive?” he said to himself, cautiously opening one eye and seeing his surroundings. Satisfied that he hadn’t shuffled off his mortal coil he stood up proudly, not quite noticing the couple he had dropped in on. “I did it! I fell all the way down and survived! I am ali–”
It was at that point when some of the debris that was still on the roof decided to fall on top of him.
