Trials and Errors
an excerpt
I wasn’t even aware of the time when I had been moved to another place in the domes. I didn’t know what had brought it on but part of me was glad to leave that place behind. The only thing that comes to my mind even now is that I never want to go near that orphanage ever again. My dreams were my friends as my imagination was left to soar in place of any experiences I may benefited from in the real world. I wasn’t awake very often and as far as I know and can clearly remember, I was only truly awake once. That was truly the most exhilarating day of my life.
It was the day that I finally left Doctor Applebee behind me. It’s difficult to explain as the beginning of that day is blurry to me. I woke up slowly, feeling stiff from lack of activity and from sleeping curled up in a ball. My legs stretched slowly at first and I felt no blanket on my legs, rubbing against my legs. However, the room was warm enough that I didn’t need the blanket. It was just the added security of the warming sheet that brought about some small creature comforts. The bed I was sleeping in was far more comfortable than my old bed had ever been as I rolled over onto my back. It pressed into the mattress beneath me as I discovered that the bed itself was actually heated. My eyes were slow to open as my arms began to run over the soft fabric.
Everything was blurry as a blob of colour appeared over me. Curiosity got the better of me as my vision focused to reveal Andrew staring down at me. There was a cross of relief and warmth in his eyes as he lowered his hand to stroke my cheek. There was a time when the motion had brought me great comfort. Strangers were poking me with needles and I had cried out before he calmed me. Everything went black after that of course but I remember a little bit of it. I stared into his eyes, noticing for the first time that they were a dark blue.
“Good morning,” he said to me.
