Synopsis: Text Caught My Tongue
Texting has replaced speech and only the rich can afford to talk. The world is obsessed with perfection and the human voice is too varied -too imperfect- for public use. The only people who can afford to buy implants to give them perfect voices are the upper echelon of society, and everyone else communicates through text message, emails and computer programs that read their written words aloud.
Excerpt: Text Caught My Tongue
Katya sent Epona a quick text before dragging her friend to a table near the back. Epona had a good view of the front of the room where a stage had been set up. There was a micrphone, an older model that must have been at least twenty years old set up at the front of the room. This surprised Epona: she hadn’t thought that anyone who could affored an auto-tune voice implant would come to a place like this. People with vocal implants that auto-tuned their voice internally were the only ones who’s voices were nice enough to speak in public. Everyone else just used vocaloid programs on their mi-boxes and texted each other. It was universally agreed upon that the human voice was grating, irregular and imperfect. So, science had brought about a way to fix it. The main issue was cost, the implantation procedure was expensive. The results were well agreed to be worth it. It created the perfect voice, a voice that would not crack with emotion or stress, a voice that would never go off key when singing. A voice that would never be too high to too low, or so odd that it might distract people. It did for the ears of others what plastic surgery did for the eyes.
