Brief Author Bio:

I'm a homeschooled teenager somewhere in America who's way too busy. I've been trying to write two novels over the course of the last couple of years, but I'm getting nowhere with them and am disillusioned with the violence integral to their plots. My friend did NaMoWriMo last year, and she recommended that I give it a try. I'm going novel-writing a fresh try with this. I'm starting with a radically different idea in a completely different genre and a set deadline, giving myself less room for procrastination.

Synopsis: The Great Taco Incident and Other Strange Occurrences From My Sophomore Year

After being suspended from school for initiating a food fight, Gavin's mother decides to homeschool until the school will take him back, determined that her son won't miss valuable learning time. Gavin never expected to enjoy homeschooling as much as he does. Of course, it doesn't hurt that one of the only other homeschooled high schoolers in the area is Carla, a very attractive older girl.

“Gavin, I’m back,” my mom announced.

“Thank God, Mom,” I said. “I can’t wait to get out of here.”

“Gavin!” Mom scolded. “You’re being rude to Carla, who’s kindly devoting her time to you.”

“It’s okay, Mrs. Andrews,” Carla said. “I understand that most teenage boys don’t find history the most fascinating subject. Oh, and by the way, it’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you as well,” Mom replied. “Talking on the phone just isn’t the same, is it?”

“No, it isn’t,” Carla affirmed.

“Mo-om, can we go now?” I asked.

“Gavin, if you’re so impatient, why don’t just go wait in the car for me?” Mom said.

It was embarrassing, the sort of thing a mother would say to a small child. However, I didn’t think Carla’s opinion of me was that high to start out with, so I went to the car like my mother suggested.

When she joined me ten minutes later, I said, “I’m never working with that girl again.”

“Gavin!” my mother exclaimed. “She’s such a nice girl. Whatever could make you say that?”

“Mom, she’s bossy and won’t let me help at all,” I explained. “She keeps telling me that the books I choose aren’t right.”

“It’s her project, Gavin, so she has a much better idea of what she wants and needs than you do,” my mom said.

“I did!” I replied. “Even after she told me a bunch of books that wouldn’t work and what to look for, she still didn’t like what I found.”

“You should learn to listen and follow directions,” Mom responded. “It isn’t exactly your strong point.”

“I really did,” I said. “She just doesn’t like me, and I don’t like her. She’s just a stuck-up girl.”

“Gavin, she’s a good influence on you.”

“Mom, I don’t care what you say,” I told her. “Nothing’s changing my opinion of Carla, and I don’t think anything will change her opinion of me. There’s no point in us continuing to work together.”

“You’ll have to work with all sorts of people if you want a job in the real world,” Mom said. “You will be going back.”

Of course, I did go back. Once Mom makes up her mind, there’s nothing to stop her.
