Synopsis:
Created out of a government research program designed to breed incredibly powerful soldiers by fusing human DNA with that of vampires, Evelyn has spent her entire life confined to a research laboratory. With the recent abolishment of the program Evelyn finds herself transferred to a foster home where she begins to settle into a somewhat normal life. However when her foster sister (also a genetic experiment) is abducted by one of the scientists intent on finishing his work, the entire family must confront the realities of what they are in order to bring her home safely.
Excerpt:
I’m not sure what led them to the creation of the research labs. My limited exposure to the general human world always led me to believe that the creatures we were created from were traditionally thought to be the stuff of legends and horror films, and that most humans still believed that to be true. The need for a victorious end to the war must have been incredibly desperate to send agents of the national government on a search for something generally agreed upon to be not only fictional, but also a monster. But somehow the scientists put in charge of enhancing the country’s military abilities were able to not only confirm the existence of the occult, but to harvest their DNA.
Genetically splicing together humans and the mythical creatures seemed the next logical step, I guess. I was intended to have the hard, impenetrable skin of an immortal. I was intended to have no need for sleep. I was intended to be strong and fast-just not so strong that the humans could not control me. It was also essential that I retained some of my human traits. I was not intended to have a need for human blood-this would pose a danger to the civilians. And my eyes were not intended to be red. Red eyes would make it easier for the enemy to tell us apart; we wanted the element of surprise on our side. Not to mention that the experiments were being kept a secret from the general population until the soldiers were created. The hope was that the promise of finally ending a 40 year long war would convince people to forgive the cross-breading of humans with mythical creatures. Months of painstaking labor went into creating a single cell, which was then implanted into another unsuspecting human and allowed to grow until I was ready to begin being what the scientists intended me to be.
