Synopsis: Vine Dancers - working title
Marianne only wants to dive through the vines in the deep, dark garden. She's not interested in collecting the seeds which her world requires to survive. Nor is she interested in having children, which only retired divers are allowed to have. When she finds that a secret has been kept from the divers, she pursues the answer with increasing anger and disregard for consequence.
Excerpt: Vine Dancers - working title
“Daddy? Can I talk now?” Marianne whispered.
“Yes.”
“Why does mommy cry when she dances?”
Her father turned her around on his lap. “She misses her friends. That’s the mourning dance.”
“What friends?”
“They’re people who’ve died.”
“Died?” This was not a familiar idea. In fact, Marianne had asked him this question before and he hadn’t answered it. She didn’t know what was different about today. “What did they die of?”
He pinched her cheek. “I hope you never find out.”
