Excerpt: The Cat Didn't Come Back

All this has led up to this phone call, in some freak of nature way—like the whole butterfly flaps its wings and there's an earthquake or hurricane or something half-way across the world. Yeah. It was like that, and I was powerless to stop it. It's already in motion and I'm caught up in it, and the fucked up part is that I didn't even know anything about it. Someone could have told me about the butterfly but no—no one did. And this phone call deviates with: “Mr. Davis. Your grandfather left you with four million dollars.” Followed by: “What the fuck? Are you serious?”
