Dedicate an entire scene to your MC dropping stuff off at the dump.
+ BP: Before your MC even has a chance to park the car, s/he is mobbed by dumpster divers eager to claim his/her junk.
++ DBP: If your MC is driving a truck, have several people leap into the bed and/or ride on the fender, clinging to the items they've claimed.
+++ QBP: A fight breaks out when two or more characters claim the same item.
++++ Cookies: The item is not only cheap and easily found at any department store, but broken.

Your MC steals their clothes from a dumpster at the local landfill.
+ BP: There is a sign plastered to the dumpster in question that expressly forbids this.
++ DBP: The MC does this regularly.
+++ QBP: S/He is the best-dressed person in their family and/or circle of acquaintances

Wow, so taking the Dump scene! This works very well since my novel is a steampunk story. Have you ever seen steampunk enthusiasts talk about they junk they find? I am going to beg for cake and ice cream for this dare by making the cheap item extremely important to the plot... :P
