30 Covers, 30 Days 2011: Day 6

Happy Daylight Savings — don’t forget to turn your clocks back and adjust your time zone settings on the NaNo site if you need to (you can find that under “Edit User Settings”). Take advantage of your extra hour and write like the dickens, taking inspiration from today’s cover, designed by Jacob Covey:

The Lying Division by Chillibean

Sixteen-year-old Klyte is the reluctant new recruit of the Lying Division. His job is to keep the peasants content by twisting the truth, but it’s not that simple. Visere says everything they do is legal, but Visere’s a Liar. And a killer.

Within days, Klyte sees just how good the Liars are at their job. The King always has his way, and everyone who opposes him are ‘persuaded’ otherwise. Any whisper of rebellion results in a mass interrogation. Any vigilantes looking for a revolt are supposed to be stamped out. But they aren’t. And they will kill for freedom.

Then Klyte realises that his worst fear shouldn’t be the vigilantes. It shouldn’t be the impending civil war. It should be the person right under his nose, smiling that knowing smile and twirling a knife behind his back.

Jacob Covey has been Art Director at Fantagraphics Books for the past seven years and operates a multi-disciplinary design studio at the mouth of the Columbia River. It never previously occurred to him that crossed fingers are both a symbol of deception and an appeal for good fortune. To him, that seems interesting.

This is a seriousy pretty cover! I'd take a definite look at a book that looks like this (and after reading this synopsis, open it and read a page or two), so that's a job well done. It definitely works well with the synopsis (love the fingers-crossed looking like someone taking a pledge, very clever.). Colors are fabulous as well. Awesome.

Just looked at the crossed fingers again, which reminded me of something we used to do as children - lie while crossing fingers behind our backs, which meant we didn't mean what we had said. Plus the military uses that sign to signal coercion.

Re: 30 Covers, 30 Days 2011: Day 6

Using a card/block over a face is not a new idea, but it works here, I think.

The title is easy to find, and not overly difficult to read, although white lettering on a pale background means it does not show up very well. The medieval lettering and twin lions work well to give the idea of the time period being in the days of chivalry. But, if that is so, then there is a problem with the photo of the person. It looks like a man wearing a white, business-suit type shirt. Of course, being fictional, it is entirely possible that there are business-suit wearing individuals in a feudal system environment.

The illustrations of lions, banners, and snake are very crudely drawn, and very dark, detracting from the very light coloured book title.

I understand that only 24 hrs is allowed for the art work, but this looks like it was felt penned down with a marker in about 20 minutes, and its roughness makes for a cheaper looking feel of the book.
