30 Covers, 30 Days 2011: Day 9

Shoot, these covers are kind of a master class in how to turn an incredibly creative work around in 24 hours, aren’t they? I know it’s inspiring me to get busy on my novel with only 21 more days ahead, though I am glad I won’t have to share my first draft with everyone at the end of the month. Today’s cover was designed by the one, the only Paul Sahre:

Oh God, the Aftermath by detailsofthewar (Allie O'Bannon)

Medical science had made so many leaps and bounds that people were living well into their hundreds. Four or five generations all using the same resources and living on the same land was putting a major strain on the economy. There wasn’t enough money to go around, enough jobs or enough food and definitely not enough space. The economy weakened and then collapsed entirely. No one but a very small percentage of the world’s population was spared from plunging into abject poverty.

This is the world Tosh Brandt is born into, a world without hope. The government is having trouble keeping up with the demand of the engorged population and the food supply is dwindling with very little possibility to grow more in the polluted, over crowded environment.

Out of desperation, the government develops a secret campaign to thin the herd. They begin by limiting food supplies to certain areas of the country, except that those in rural areas begin to flock to the cities and the promise of all they can eat. When that doesn’t work, the government’s militia strike in the dead of the night, taking whole families. Despite their best efforts, disappearances are widely talked about. But very few people understand what’s going on. Those who do decide to fight back.

Paul Sahre is a graphic designer working out of his own office in New York City. He just finished building a life-size paper monster truck hearse.

That novel sounds terrifying -- it sounds like what the real-world news will be reporting in a few decades. D: I don't think I'd read it, just because I'm scared of the future already (and also because in that scenario, I'd be a jerk in favour of limiting population as well, just not through killing families). ;)

The cover ... yikes. Definitely my least favourite by far, and will probably be for the rest of the month unless something really weird happens. To each their own, though! It's striking, I'll give him that. ^^

but interesting story idea too! (but scary as h***!)

It's quite pretty, but some fail in it. Like, where it's supposed to say "the Aftermath". Paul Sahre needs to redo the letters. It makes the cover less impressive.
But Allie O'Bannon's novel sounds completely brilliant. I'd love to see it go great places after NaNoWriMo. :D

This sounds like a good read, and quite relevant. However, I question whether the people from rural areas would really starve. I come from a rural community and there's a garden in half the backyards (not to mention the farms), and I know people who grow vegetables in case something (like this) ever happens. Still, I like the idea here. Good luck!

Oh yeah, the cover... I really like it. It pops and would catch my eye in the store, which is what a good cover should do. I do have a small problem with some of the words missing, but it they're on the spine of the novel then I'd be okay with it.

This would likely catch my eye, and I'd probably check it out... but only because it's weird and confusing and I can't even read the whole title. I don't care for this cover much, nor do I even understand it. I especially dislike the tiny, upside-down author name.

But the positives! This story looks REALLY good. Like Lorata, I probably wouldn't read it for fear of being frightened (Miracle Day has done enough of that), but it looks like a really good story.

Re: 30 Covers, 30 Days 2011: Day 9

I don't think I explained this really well in my synopsis but the idea is that this novel is set at least a hundred years in the future. Society has continued to evolve into an "I want it now and don't want to work for it" culture and most people have forgotten how to do things for themselves. Also, the majority of the farm land was sold and turned into housing for the exploding population... so that's a problem too.

Otherwise, I totally agree with you. I live in a rural area as well and we would definitely be all about growing our own fruits and veggies.

it's an interesting concept and the colors are great, but somehow I feel the font of the letters look cheap... (Something I noticed on more of the covers made this year)

Also the white splotches on one of the teeth annoy me, they attract my attention too much that it is distracting from the rest of the image.

And like a lot of others, I do not understand why part of the words are gone... Perhaps they are hiding behind the teeth, but even then, I'm not sure this would be any good for selling the book.

Seems this year the book cover artists are focusing a lot more on the artistic freedom over the practical use of the covers.

I STILL love the synopsis and excerpt of this story. Love it love it love it.

But the cover is a little off. I can't tell if the lettering was intentional, such as the cut off of "the aftermath" and the cut off/misspelling of the author's name. And the author's name is hardly noticeable, as is "the aftermath". If it was intentional, I'm not entirely get the point of why...

But I do like the colors and the images. I think they stand out.

At first I thought the teeth next to the words may be a part of the title,
(like a picture of teeth and the word 'thing' could make teething?) If that makes sense at all.
But it doesn't work, which is a shame.
I went on the artist's site and he has a load of great stuff.
Perhaps he had a very clever reason behind the missing letters - too clever for us to understand.

However, if it's a typo - he's in a bad situation allowing that to be posted online for all future clients to see.

On a plus note, great artwork and I love the synopsis. Sounds like a great read Allie, good luck :)

WHAAATT!? Yeah, you can't really have a book cover without the entire title, and the entire author's name on it. I don't get it.

But the synopsis? I've read this one before, and it sounds amazing. I love reading about dystopian societies. I would totally read this.

If the title and author name were complete, I think I'd love this. Otherwise it's just a bit confusing- you really don't get any info from it. But it's a cool and fitting design.

So the book is "Oh God, e termath" by Allie O'Bann? I get how the words look like they're behind the teeth, and it's an interesting image... but it doesn't work as a book cover. Seems to be a theme with 30C30D.

The synopsis, however, is fantastic!

Really? A cut off title like that? It scares me that designers like this one have jobs.... Which is really sad, because I FREAKING LOVE the premise. I would read this in a heartbeat, seeing I can't get enough of screw-up/dystopian-ish plots, but I would never pick up this book based on its cover.

This is, so far, my least favorite cover, which is sad because the story sounds amazing. I get that the covers are art under pressure and sometimes it might be tricky coming up with something for some stories, that doesn't excuse the errors, especially when the author doesn't get proper credit for their work when you only put part of their name on it! On a happier note, you would think these types of errors would be more easily fixed...

Design and colour are very interesting.

Two most important points for a book cover, though, are the title, and the author's name.

The title has been chopped up enough that it could cause difficulties when looking for this in a store. I think that is a serious enough problem to ask for a re-do.

Author's name - ditto, with above, with the added problem that the book now does not show the author's true name. This is a pretty serious error, I am surprised an experienced illustrator didn't know better than to put this out.

Just to note, these aren't actually for use in stores. :) They're just for fun... not marketability!

Happiness

One is always on a strange road, watching strange scenery and listening to strange music. Edmonton Escort Then one day, you will find that the things you try hard to forget are already gone. Edmonton Escort
Happiness is not about being immortal nor having food or rights in one's hand. Edmonton Asian Escort It’s about having each tiny wish come true, or having something to eat when you are hungry or having someone's love when you need love.
