[Writing Buddies]Adopt A Wordcount Dragon

You have a NaNoWriMo Angel standing by, ready to intervene should start to delete a sentence from your novel. A Hellhound guards your words from evil novel-thieves and chases away your Procrastination Demon when it tries to sneak back in after being banished. But how can these help you if you don't write anything?

Enter the Wordcount Dragon. These lovely creatures subsist entirely off of the creative energy generated by your wordcount as it steadily rises over the course of November. They love it when you build up a surplus of tasty wordage, and are generally content as long as your wordcount stays on track. But, every day that you fail to reach your minimum goal, your dragon starves. And a starving dragon will resort to eating anything it can get its scaly little claws on.

To demonstrate, let me provide you with part of the transcript from a recording of a dragon-owning Wrimo who failed to reach her wordcount goals two days in a row:

"... Alright, yes, I'm doing it, you don't have to be so destructive. Just let me ... For God's sake, stop! Stop! I ... No! Sit down! Now stay. I'm ... No, don't eat the notebook. I need the notebook, give me the notebook [tearing sounds] Stay! Bad boy! Just wait a moment and let me -- No. No! NOT THE COFFEE! NOOOOO!"

Ahem. Should you decide to adopt your very own Wordcount Dragon, I think you will find him or her to be very effective in helping you to stay on track during the coming month.

To start things off, I'm putting Kreki up for adoption. Kreki is a light golden-brown dragon, with a large wingspan for his size and hand-like foreclaws that are very adept at opening things that you tried to lock shut. About the size of a house cat, he likes to sit on your desk and watch you expectantly when you play computer games instead of writing your novel.

I have Rai. She's the size of a medium sized dog and changes color depending on her mood. Her eyes are constantly silver though. She is quite the child. She whines when not fed enough words and is always wanting more. Though she helps a lot too. She has the power to enter dreams, so she helps me figure out my plot while I sleep. :D

Mine is Orchid. She's very tiny, (About 1 inch high & two inches long), and is long and skinny like a Chinese dragon. She does have wings, but they're dragonfly wings that change color according to her mood. Her eyes are silver, and the rest of her is dark jade. She is very demanding; unless I meet my wordcount goal, she holds my noveling pencils hostage along with my goldfish's food. The amount of words I must feed her a day is constantly changing, and I am forced to meet that amount, lest my fish starve to death. Because she's so tiny, she can fit in my pocket and come with me to school and help me with my novels there. (Like during geometry) She also goes over my half-baked ides with me; helping me tweak them before I put them in a novel. (Or sometimes scorching the exeptionally bad ones) Unfortunatly, she has claimed the area in front of my dragon books on my bookcase as hers, and won't let me read one unless I give her extra words after I meet my word goal ^_^

I shall adopt Kreki, and he shall be my Kreki!

Leaving: Draco, a very large purple dragon. Draco is very self absorbed. He's incredibly intellegint and strong, and he knows it. Just about nothing scares him. Except starvation. So keep up you word count, or he'll come for revenge. He loves reading the novel before eating the words.

Leaving: Joey, a small adorable brown dragon with red flecks. He eats ALL the time so don't adopt him unless you plan on writing constantly (Which I'm sure you all do). He's very playful and loving, and he enjoys nuzzling up against your neck. Just a warning, he will claim your pillow as his own. And by the end of the month it will be covered in burn marks~
Enjoy!

Ah, sounds just like my kitty cat, only with fire. So taking him.

Leaving Cal. A black little trickster, he gets into mischief if you try and procrastinate. He loves long, full worded sentances (no contrations!) and other little sneaky word count tips as his favourite snacks. He likes his belly rubbed, and under his chin.

Oh I love Cal, can I adopt him!?!?! I looked through the list a few pages but did not see that anyone claimed him. He can help me stay away from those nasty contradictions I hate but can't seem to stop myself from writing. (See, did it again.)

I'll post one on the last page...

Leaving: Gregory, a small, very spikey, very adorable, very bad tempered turquoise dragon that is most comfortable when inside your bedside lampshade or ceiling lamp, provided the lamp / other light fixture is on. He is awake from the moment you begin writing, to the moment you fulfill your word count target. Should you dare to turn a light off and attempt sleep before reaching your minimum word count each day, Gregory will sneak into your bed and curl his very very spikey body around your big toe with an incredibly tight grip. He will not leave until fed, and if not fed, will begin to slowly consume your feet.
He has been known to eat entire people. Be afraid.
I'll miss young Gregory, but I'm sure he can find a lovely word-eating home with a generous novelist.

I'll gladly take little Gregory. He sounds just precious and might even find himself becoming overstuffed with delicious words.

Leaving : Jaxie
She is a tiny dragon, one that loves to lay on your keyboard during the moments where you are pausing for more words. She enjoys tossing puffs of fire into the air and is generally cute and cuddly. If you get behind on your word count though, she becomes very feisty. She tends to burn anything she lands on until the words are flowing again. She is sure to help along the more timid NaNoer's as she wouldn't ever hurt a human, and doesn't want to mess up anything you are working on...just what it rests on. :)

I know Jaxie has been claimed by one person, but it seems with all the adoption threads, it's fine if others claim the same thing as well. So I hope you don't mind, she will be my personal little reminder! I'll take good care of her, I've always wanted a dragon.

I just have to have Jaxie. U___U She's absolutely adorable.

Chapter is a rather fine but shy little stone dragon. He may be small in dragon-terms, but he stands up to your thigh and weighs about the same as a Saint-Bernard. He loves reading, his favourite books being those his owner has written, but when left to his own devices without anything to read, he will proceed to eat whatever food he can find. Actually, scratch that. Unlike other Wordcount dragons, he is the most pickiest eater you will ever meet and will whine and demand most rudely for the finest beef steafs, the juiciest peaches, the loveliest shrimp dinners you can find. Really, it's almost worse than an ordinary Wordcount dragon so keep that wordcount up.

You could always try Winthrop.

He's about the size of a new-born kitten with a longer tail than most. He enjoys jumping onto ceiling fans although you might have to help him down as his wings are such flimsy things. He has green-blue eyes. He's is cuddly until you miss your word count goal. That's when his wings start flittering madly and he tends to turn red. He'll nibble on your fingers until you begin writing again. He's not afraid of blood...or bone.

-wants a dragon- they all sound so precious. ):

Leaving:
Chusi. She looks like a sweet little dark indigo dragon, and she is, she's just . . . temperamental. She has a larger wingspan than she can handle (she's growing quite fast and might require you to go beyond the daily word count to satisfy her hunter!) which makes her rather clumsy. She doesn't really like angels; she's been known to snap at them. She likes her food still living... Anyway, she's very curious and gets herself in more trouble than most other dragons might. Chusi loves her solitude and is very catlike, minus the dainty and graceful bit. She loves to cuddle and enjoys eating out of the palm of your hand if you can stand the gore. As for reading, she likes reading, but she is rather violent and she HATES the books that portray dragons that 1. get slaughtered by "handsome" princes (please! they should be the ones slaughtered and how would a little iron shield protect them anyway?) 2. like dumb pack animals. So if you know what's good for you and don't want to find your house burnt down the next morning, don't portray dragons as dumb animals that can get slaughtered by a prince that's 10x smaller than they are.

KiKiBee23: I am totally adopting Jaxie. Silverblown and I will just have to share her :)

Leaving: Amber. She the perfect size to curl up on your notebook, and has brilliant golden scales, but don't mistake her for a cute little puffball. She WILL steal your coffee if you don't meet your word goal. And heaven knows that none of us Nanowrimo's want that. She's thin, like a chinese dragon, but has no whiskers. Her big purple eyes have the power to compel your to write. Just remember that she can breath fire while you're searching the web...
Take care of her!

Leaving: Sharley. A very independent dragon, one who will often disappear when unneeded to do her own thing, but shows up when needed most. Her favorite food is shredded writer's block with a sprinkling of inspiration. When your daily word count drops below 700, she thinks that it is the computer/notebooks fault and starts chewing on the corners.

:)

Fluffy-Dog-Girl

I'll take her! She sounds adorable. Mind if I color her purple with blue eyes? It's similar to my main character's hair and eye color, and would definitely help motivate me. And of course I wouldn't want her chewing on my laptop edges XD

None of them really fit me now so I'll just leave one!

Troy- Troy is an adorable little sea serpent, if you adopt him you can keep him in a cup of water by your computer or notebook. If you start dozing or daydreaming, he'll squirt you with a jet of water to help you focus. If you leave your means of writing for an extended period of time and you're behind your word count, you make come back to find them soaked. (I suggest waterproofing!) And if you think you're safe from him if you go to bed without finishing your minimum amount of words because he lives in a glass of water, think again! He'll unfold the tiniest of wings on his back and flutter over to your bed and start noming you, which I can imagine wouldn't be very pleasant. When you aren't behind on your word count, he'll spend his time swimming in his little cup of water, making whirlpools and blowing air bubbles!

AUSTERE
50093 words so far Winner!

I'd love to adopt Troy! He sounds perfect! :)

Leaving: Eildu.
Eildu is a hyper little thing. He might distract you from typing until he gets hungry, which means: watch out! His favorite snacks are dogs or cats, so he won't be good around those animals if you have them. He's a rather large dragon, perhaps the size of a german shepherd and still growing! He tries to hide in places he can't fit when he's in trouble. Anyway, Eildu is a lavender color which doesn't make him that fearsome until he growls. He's still teething, so enjoy! If you're behind on your word count, you might end up feeling nibbles on your arms until you feed him.

I have another one up for adoption!

Rawry- Rawry is a golden dragon around the size of a large cat and is a real character. He came up with his own name by himself and thinks its really clever (Get it cause dragons, RAWR!) Never call him by his real name or he'll get really mad, he hates it. (I won't even tell you for your own protection.) Although he may freak out about his name, he is very gentle. He isn't all that into devouring everything in his path to get you to continue writing, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have his own ways to motivate you to write. He will billow smoke out of his nostrils as a warning sign when you get distracted. Despite his name, he'll hiss at you threateningly if you even think about stopping before you reach your minimum word count. And if you ignore his hissing and go to bed, he'll join you but only to tickle you with the end of his tail, urging you to get up and continue writing. When your writing at a suitable pace for Rawry's liking, he's been known to chase his own tail and trying to make pictures out of the fire he breathes.

Leaving: Cucumber, a small, green dragon. When you're up to speed on wordcount, she appears to be very nice, and she enjoys sitting in your lap and dozing. However, don't let her size fool you, for if she hears you stop typing, she's known to get a little nasty. She carefully monitors your wordcount, and if you fall behind, she... well, her previous owner gave her to me when they had to check in to the asylum. However, if you can manage to keep up on wordcount, she's very sweet, and sometimes when you get ahead, she'll even let you have some coffee without growling at you!

Looking for: mild-mannered dragon who is understanding of my schedule. As an engineering major who is participating in Humans vs Zombies this week, I may get behind on my wordcount for the first few days and have to catch up on weekends. I'd like a dragon who takes that into account before motivating me.

Leaving:
Kiri, a tiny dragon (about two inches tall). She loves to sit on her author's shoulder while they're typing. She may bite your ear if you delete a word. Favorite foods include grilled cheese and chocolate. If you fall behind on word count, she will kidnap your favorite snacks and refuse to give them back until you have caught up. If you take too long, she will get bored and eat the snacks. Kiri has been known to lounge on keyboards when authors go on Facebook (but only if they're behind on their word count).

NerdlyLindsey

How about we do a trade? I'll adopt Kiri and you can take Disco!

Disco is blue dragon, about the size of medium size dog and looks like the Chinese dragons. Disco is extremely intelligent and fiercely loyal. He will make special, strong connections to his new owner. He'll understand if his owner is behind on his words because he is busy because he trust his owner will make it up. (And if he is provided snacks to keep him from getting hungry because of the lack of words) Its only when the word count is behind because of his owners laziness does he get annoyed. He'll burn the edges of your notebooks to try and convince you to keep writing. He enjoys to read, everything and anything, and curl up in your lap to take naps being soothed to sleep by the sounds of your fingers moving on the keyboard, if he hears it stop, he'll wake up and motivate you to finish your word count.

Perhaps you'd be interested in Kiri's twin brother, Loki. He's about the same size as Kiri, but prefers spaghetti to grilled cheese sandwiches. He is very good at building things. When you're behind on your word count, he will you all your office supplies to build a contraption moving your laptop from your desk to your bed so that you can't go to sleep until you catch up on your word count.

And thanks for Disco! He sounds perfect. I have plenty of books in my room for him to read while I'm at class.

I have one to leave, for some loving person to take!

Meet Lexi, the great lavender dragon! She's really cute and small, about the size of a half grown cat, though her wingspan is a bit big for her size... She loves to curl up on the desk next to those who like to write and wait for them to finish their writing for the day, though if you don't make it to your minimum wordcount, she will glare daggers at you from one half opened eye untill you sit down and finish. She has had a great time accompanying me on several adventures, and I think it's about time that she finds another person who's company she can enjoy. I don't write enough to satisfy her. I'm leaving Darling:
He's very grumpy when he isn't fed, and he'll sit on top of your computer and/or notepad and whine loudly until you write more. He's a pretty turquoisey blue with ruby eyes that turn orange when he drinks too much soda. He's rather young, but he's loyal, and he'll sit in your lap if you'll let him. His favorite food, other than words, is marshmallows, so you can throw some at him to keep him from complaining while you take your daily five-minute break from novelling. He's never quite managed to breathe fire, but he can muster up a lovely Febreeze sort of smoke to freshen up your stale, thought-clustered air. He will also injure anyone who dares to interrupt your creative process.

And I leave Jem and Nigh: a two-headed dragon. Nigh is smarter, but Jem can breathe fire longer/farther. The two heads don't agree on much, except how tasty high wordcounts are! When it comes down to it, though, they love each other and you! They're protective and will defend your creative process, but they are a bit sarcastic at times. Leaving Cesar.
Cesar, despite the grandiose name and self-serving attitude to go with it, is hardly larger than an overfed house cat. He likes to flop all over monitor tops, taking great pride in his ability to balance longways along flat screens. He likes to keep 'like company'; authors to be that will shake the very foundations of the literary world (just like he did back in the political world of Rome, according to his self accounts). Gold with a vermilion flair down his back on and on his wings, he saves his fire for last-24-hour-FORGOT-TO-FEED-THE-DRAGON! write-a-thon 'inspiration'. (He burned Rome down once, you know.) Otherwise, if not fed, he will sit on your chest while you try to sleep and make randomly spaced growling noises to make sure you can't drift off to dreams.
And because you writing is his food, he is quick to snap at the heels of any and all distractions...other than himself, of course.
