Writing your novel with pirates in it too? Coolness ~~ let's all gather 'round the galley and chat about various woes and triumphs of your crew. Or whatever, you know^^?

The fun about writing about pirates is the fact that writing is a freedom in which you can use in any way. You could go with the classic: Gruff men who smoke all day with a hand on their dagger, and talk in slang. Or you could go with something a bit more ironic or somewhat humorous: A friendly pirate who works for an evil crew yet doesn't agree with their actions, and secretly helps the good guys until his torture does him otherwise.
The pirates in any story can be very unusual. It helps spice up the story with something no one would've expected.

I have pirates! Well, sort of. My novel is a futuristic sci-fi adventure, so my pirates are Space Pirates. They believe that they are descendants from the original sea-fairing pirates on old Earth. They have 7 Royals (each is a Commander of an armada of spaceships) who inherit their names from their ancient bloodlines. So I have a Blackbeard, an Anne Boony etc. They're one set of villains in my nano novel this year.

My pirates are bearded lemming pirates, and the main characters of the story. Kind of going for a more slapstick adventure lol.

All right! Those sound good^^ my pirates sometimes find themselves in funny situations too. They're a six-cat and one girl enchanted crew, plus a human boy. Sometimes they act like cats and eat fish and nap all day by the warm kitchen stove, and sometimes they act like pirates and storm into port and upset ... cafes and open air markets and restaurants. And look for treasure sometimes (of course). The boy, Eddie, is a level-headed, moral middle schooler who was captured by them out of nowhere and forced to do their bidding (and cursed with a special ability to aid in helping). Sometimes the stories are a little foodie-related, but travel the seven seas and not eat the local delicacies? They'd have to be crazy^^.

Allo yallo! I wrote my pirates during Camp NaNo, but they're getting edited this November. It's book one of a trilogy, so I'll be working with them more later.

The crew as they are in book 1 (this is long, sorry)
Main characters:
- Captain Ephraim Bates, the grizzled, experienced leader, bound to his ship by an ancestral duty
- Kate Robinson, FMC, hates pirates, but is dragged on an adventure to get revenge for her murdered fiance
- Gabriel "Gabe" Bates, MMC, the Captain's nephew and Kate's best friend/boss, he's protected Kate since they met, but had an ulterior motive. Has longed to continue the family duty with his uncle and be a proper pirate. Has major rose-colored glasses on as far as life at sea goes.
The Crew:
- Snake-Eyes Reg, loyal, but has nothing but bad luck.
- Orik the Obscene, first mate, giant of a man with the foulest tongue ever to be heard on the seas. When they say "cuss like a sailor", they mean Orik. Also writes poetry.
- The Blood Brothers, Mickey and Pete, identical twins. The only way to tell them apart is that Mickey has a tattoo that reads "Pete" and Pete has one that reads "Mom". They were drunk and Pete forgot what he was going to get.
- Salih, son of Ephraim's late best friend, ship's accountant. Quiet man who prefers to spend his time in the crow's nest
- Adomas, a foreign merchant found washed up on a deserted island. Ephraim rescued him and he swears a blood oath to him. Has a nose for treasure and valuables and keeps the crews' pockets full.
- "Cookie", the ship's cook and the only one who knows Kate's past with pirates.
- Thom, a tailor from Kate and Gabe's hometown. A nervous man whose hands shake when doing anything but sewing.
- Geoff, a jack-of-all-trades from Kate and Gabe's hometown. A flirt with a very bad memory.
- Sam the Rat, a young boy Kate found floating at sea. Was an orphan street rat, wants to be a "pie-rat". He's nimble and small enough to find all the good hiding spots, offers to serve Ephraim as a spy.

I think that's everyone... It's a big crew (not including the nameless guys who fill up space in the crew), but everyone's got their purpose. It was fun to write them and I can't wait to fully finish book 1 and get working on book 2!

I feel like the odd one as my pirates are not the fantasy world kind...
Regular pirates with their swords and treacherous nature to wreak havoc on the lives of many. :)

Oh mine are like that too- I just can't stand abiding by historical things (i.e. who ruled the Caribbean, actual pirates etc.) so I created my own Island area.

Same here, I tried doing some research on real places for the setting, but it just wasn't fitting for what I wanted, so I made my own island setting. So much more freedom :)

I know little about piracy. I have vague memories of Treasure Island and Captain Blood... but not much more.

I think I finally decided 16th century (or was it 17th... don't have my notes open).

I have two stories in one that will converge in the last book of this 3-5 book series (I have plans for five, but I may discover that it can be told in three).

I think mine is more like Broken-Mirror's with a a motive (vengeance) behind it all.

Yes, I have pirates. Two crews full! Well, one crew of about five characters (and not filler) and another crew of only 2. My pirates are rather absurd in nature and cartoonish (think Dark Water), and while sailing semi-typical pirate ships (they are decorated rather absurdly) they live in a world that was once dominated by science... except, now, people think that the old science is magic.

The only two serious characters are the FMC, Captain Red, who's like this to keep the rest of her crazy crew in check... and my Big Bad. The Big Bad is like that, though, 'cause you can't take him serious if he's all silly. I suppose 1 of The Big Bad's crew (of 2) is fairly serious, minus his design/concept.

Oh! The big bad is a god, not a pirate... so he's kinda separate from the main story as an excuse for adding in randomness.

Oh! Pirate people listen up! Soooo exciting^___^ I was having trouble thinking of a plot to write about but this morning in the shower I was thinking how awesome it would be for my crew to go to Japanese onsen (hot springs ~~ so jealous!) -- and the whole story came to me! Something like a world-wide scavenger hunt or somethin'... but don't wanna giveaway too many details... as moomoo so pointed out-- "thar be pirates here"!

Anyone else have odd places you get ideas? Anybody else's crew gonna visit some hot springs this November^^? Or are they the kind of pirates who don't like soap 'n getting clean 'n stuff......?

Oh woot! A PIRATES THREAD! I has a pirate-y story^^ Of course, I'm trying to name them all, and work out all the kinks in my plot, and beat the rambunctious S.O.B. pirate into submission because he kinda wants to sail all over the place and beat up everyone, but I'm pretty sure I'll get it to work^^ I'm gonna be posting a mongo-post over in the Plot Doctoring area for naming stuffs, and if anyone feels like dropping some names by me, that'd be... well, pretty awesome XD

I think my antagonist is going to be a pirate? Well, a crew of them, anyway. (give me a break, I literally got this plot like an hour ago and now I'm signed up WHAT AM I DOING.) My story is about a girl who was rejected by the Imperial Navy and went on to become a Famous Adventurer instead, and the boy who gets a job on her ship and finds out that the famous captain he idolized isn't quite the "man" he thought he was.

So if anyone here has done any ship-related research and feels like sharing... *bats eyes prettily*

I have pirates. Largely silly pirates. No plot as such exists yet, so we're going with timetravelling pirates including ones from the future who recognize Freddie Mercury as a god, roman pirates, communist space pirates, and whoever comes into my mind next month.

Totally writing a Sea Adventure NaNo with pirates in it. My MMC, Cassiel, is an orphan who lives on a chain of islands that no one ever really leaves. He inherits an ancient, beaten down ship from an old ex-pirate who starts to teach him the ways of the sea, but then dies. So Cassiel flounders about, trying to patch up the ship, when an injured girl washes up on shore. Turns out the girl was captured by pirates months ago, then somehow manages to do something bad enough to be forced to walk the plank. I'm thinking she has some magical talents and was secretly using them on the pirates and they found out. Anyways, Cassiel takes it upon himself to sail her back to her homeland and, in the mean time, take revenge on the pirates that captured and tried to kill her, fight some sea monsters, avoid a couple of sirens and maybe meet a selkie or two.

So pirate adventure-fantasy FTW! :]
