Re: Pirates

I have pirates! Well, sort of. My novel is a futuristic sci-fi adventure, so my pirates are Space Pirates. They believe that they are descendants from the original sea-fairing pirates on old Earth. They have 7 Royals (each is a Commander of an armada of spaceships) who inherit their names from their ancient bloodlines. So I have a Blackbeard, an Anne Boony etc. They're one set of villains in my nano novel this year.

Re: Pirates

All right! Those sound good^^ my pirates sometimes find themselves in funny situations too. They're a six-cat and one girl enchanted crew, plus a human boy. Sometimes they act like cats and eat fish and nap all day by the warm kitchen stove, and sometimes they act like pirates and storm into port and upset ... cafes and open air markets and restaurants. And look for treasure sometimes (of course). The boy, Eddie, is a level-headed, moral middle schooler who was captured by them out of nowhere and forced to do their bidding (and cursed with a special ability to aid in helping). Sometimes the stories are a little foodie-related, but travel the seven seas and not eat the local delicacies? They'd have to be crazy^^.

Re: Pirates

Allo yallo! I wrote my pirates during Camp NaNo, but they're getting edited this November. It's book one of a trilogy, so I'll be working with them more later.

The crew as they are in book 1 (this is long, sorry)
Main characters:
- Captain Ephraim Bates, the grizzled, experienced leader, bound to his ship by an ancestral duty
- Kate Robinson, FMC, hates pirates, but is dragged on an adventure to get revenge for her murdered fiance
- Gabriel "Gabe" Bates, MMC, the Captain's nephew and Kate's best friend/boss, he's protected Kate since they met, but had an ulterior motive. Has longed to continue the family duty with his uncle and be a proper pirate. Has major rose-colored glasses on as far as life at sea goes.
The Crew:
- Snake-Eyes Reg, loyal, but has nothing but bad luck.
- Orik the Obscene, first mate, giant of a man with the foulest tongue ever to be heard on the seas. When they say "cuss like a sailor", they mean Orik. Also writes poetry.
- The Blood Brothers, Mickey and Pete, identical twins. The only way to tell them apart is that Mickey has a tattoo that reads "Pete" and Pete has one that reads "Mom". They were drunk and Pete forgot what he was going to get.
- Salih, son of Ephraim's late best friend, ship's accountant. Quiet man who prefers to spend his time in the crow's nest
- Adomas, a foreign merchant found washed up on a deserted island. Ephraim rescued him and he swears a blood oath to him. Has a nose for treasure and valuables and keeps the crews' pockets full.
- "Cookie", the ship's cook and the only one who knows Kate's past with pirates.
- Thom, a tailor from Kate and Gabe's hometown. A nervous man whose hands shake when doing anything but sewing.
- Geoff, a jack-of-all-trades from Kate and Gabe's hometown. A flirt with a very bad memory.
- Sam the Rat, a young boy Kate found floating at sea. Was an orphan street rat, wants to be a "pie-rat". He's nimble and small enough to find all the good hiding spots, offers to serve Ephraim as a spy.

I think that's everyone... It's a big crew (not including the nameless guys who fill up space in the crew), but everyone's got their purpose. It was fun to write them and I can't wait to fully finish book 1 and get working on book 2!

I know little about piracy. I have vague memories of Treasure Island and Captain Blood... but not much more.

I think I finally decided 16th century (or was it 17th... don't have my notes open).

I have two stories in one that will converge in the last book of this 3-5 book series (I have plans for five, but I may discover that it can be told in three).

I think mine is more like Broken-Mirror's with a a motive (vengeance) behind it all.

Yes, I have pirates. Two crews full! Well, one crew of about five characters (and not filler) and another crew of only 2. My pirates are rather absurd in nature and cartoonish (think Dark Water), and while sailing semi-typical pirate ships (they are decorated rather absurdly) they live in a world that was once dominated by science... except, now, people think that the old science is magic.

The only two serious characters are the FMC, Captain Red, who's like this to keep the rest of her crazy crew in check... and my Big Bad. The Big Bad is like that, though, 'cause you can't take him serious if he's all silly. I suppose 1 of The Big Bad's crew (of 2) is fairly serious, minus his design/concept.

My story is about a girl who was rejected by the Imperial Navy and went on to become a Famous Adventurer instead, and the boy who gets a job on her ship and finds out that the famous captain he idolized isn't quite the "man" he thought he was.

So if anyone here has done any ship-related research and feels like sharing... *bats eyes prettily*

Re: Pirates

Totally writing a Sea Adventure NaNo with pirates in it. My MMC, Cassiel, is an orphan who lives on a chain of islands that no one ever really leaves. He inherits an ancient, beaten down ship from an old ex-pirate who starts to teach him the ways of the sea, but then dies. So Cassiel flounders about, trying to patch up the ship, when an injured girl washes up on shore. Turns out the girl was captured by pirates months ago, then somehow manages to do something bad enough to be forced to walk the plank. I'm thinking she has some magical talents and was secretly using them on the pirates and they found out. Anyways, Cassiel takes it upon himself to sail her back to her homeland and, in the mean time, take revenge on the pirates that captured and tried to kill her, fight some sea monsters, avoid a couple of sirens and maybe meet a selkie or two.

So pirate adventure-fantasy FTW! :]

Re: Pirates

I've got pirates! Though, I have an idea for how my story will begin, how it will end, and even how Part 2 will start....but no idea of what will happen in between. The plot in a nutshell is the second in command for a famed pirate is wrongly accused of plotting a mutiny and he is marooned. However, he is rescued (by a female pirate....they existed, and I liked the idea of a woman coming to the rescue of a man and maybe exploring that dynamic a bit). He's determined to track down his old captain for revenge. In the end, he finds him, but for some, not fully worked out as of yet reason, cannot kill him. He decides to give up his pirate life, but Part 2 will call him back to the sea.

But, what to do in between! Sure there is the pursuit of the old captain, but I want other stuff to happen as well. For those of you that have written pirate stories before (or enjoy reading them) what are some "musts" for a pirate story? I have to admit, my favorite part of the preparation is coming up with the names of places and thinking of some general mythologies for this world. I can't wait to see it unfold in a couple of weeks!

The pirates in my story are the main antagonists. They are modern pirates, so the crew is a lot smaller than it would be for a sailing ship. I don't have everything fleshed out yet, but I think one of the pirates is going to end up flipping sides two or three times and help my protagonist. Gotta keep it interesting.

Re: Pirates

I am doing Pirates!!! The only problem is...I kinda don't know what I'm doing. Pirates is an option, only because I've just watched all four POTC movies in one go, as well as seeing the Three Musketeers and have been listening to both soundtracks (including Cutthroat Island as well) on repeat for the last 72 hours, wondering how I can write a Pirate novel!!!!

This is my idea so far. Very cliched, I know, but hey, it's pirates. :D

For Theresa Jones, London society is all that she has. Growing up without parents and a brother determined to make a life for them both at sea, Theresa has been left in the care of people who turned her into a doll. Balls, dinners, carriage rides with girls who gossip - day in and day out, its always the same.
Then news comes that Theresa's brother has died while on duty with the navy, and Theresa's life is turned upside down. Yet her brother's life in the Navy wasn't all as respectable as he made it out to be. After a ball one evening, Theresa finds herself kidnapped by a group of men who are....le gasp....pirates!!!
Captain Jack Saunders isn't really the type to make friends with Navy officers. Yet Thomas Jones manages to be that one that he does...right before he dies at the hands of Jack's rival, (insert evil pirate's name here). Jack promises Thomas that he will protect Thomas' sister with every inch of his life.
Theresa isn't happy about being held on a pirate ship, even if it it for her own good. Despite all her protests, Jack refuses to let her go. But as time slowly moves forward, their hatred for one another fades, and a friendship is built between the two. It is one thing to hate a pirate, but to love one?

so................it sounds slightly ridiculous and terrible, I know, but what do you think? Should I do pirates or stick with the realistic fiction/urban fantasy idea I've also been toying with?

Re: Pirates

I'm thinking about doing a novel about pirates, especially since my first idea disappeared off my computer and my second idea is going nowhere. My main character is going to be named Ren (which isn't a very piratey name at all, but I think it's a cool name so there lol XD), and he shall be a pirate captain with an unusual heritage. There is also probably going to be a female character in his crew, disguised as a man, which is, of course considered very bad luck on a ship, but then he has a cat, so maybe their luck is neutral? lol

And of course they go around doing the kinds of things pirates do, drinking, stealing, crating a massive headache for the navy, all that fun stuff. I haven't really decided on a central plot yet, but I'm sure it'll come with time.

Re: Pirates

Mine has steampunk air pirates! Though "pirating" in my case refers more to black market trade and smuggling, and working independently from the British Aeronavy. I kinda want to continue their adventures in a more proper pirate-y storyline but it will be a bit much for this book.

My basic plot is about an upperclass young woman (Eleanor) from a very rich banker family who could give a crap less about being "a lady." However, she's a constant embarassment to the family and, worse yet, nobody wishes to marry her... which in Victorian society was the ultimate failing for a woman, and could mean she gets sold to a brothel/the streets.

Eleanor happens to meet up with a charismatic trader in town (Thaddeus) who begins to court her and pay attention to her. She's pretty baffled, but her family is putting pressure on her to just marry him so they can be rid of her. That night, though, her father's bank is broken into. Long story short, she'd kinda figured out that he wasn't quite a legitimate trader and so she forces her way onto his ship (The Harbinger) and demands an explaination-- but they're rushing to take off to avoid the police and she ends up as a hostage.

But the real story starts when the Eleanor's sister's newlywed husband disappears with all the dowry money the night after the wedding- and so does the Thaddeus. And a lot of prominent scientists. The crew of the Harbinger suspect theres a connection, and they decide to pursue him and find out what is really going on. They find clues that lead them to an entirely hidden past, a massive, earth-shattering project, and a bid to change history forever.

I explained that badly, but oh well.

Incidentally, anyone else dressing as a pirate for Halloween? It's my official costume-for-life. My entire group of friends are dressing as Ben and Jerry's ice cream flavors this year, but I refused in favor of the old pirate outfit. So now I'm an ice cream smuggler, I believe.

My crew is sailing 'round the horn of...what would be South America if it were the real world. Which it almost is, but isn't quite. They'll end up in the gold fields of a place remarkably like California and travel inland to rustle cattle and chase chickens and whatnot.

Re: Pirates

My novel this year is supposed to be a pirate novel.

I plotted out the story in advance (which seems to have served no purpose; I'm no further ahead than I was last year, and I pansted through that one!).
And then I looked at my notes and wondered..."Are these guys ever at sea?" *headdesk*

So that's one of the things I'll have to work at when NaNo is over. That and making sure the story has the right tone of creepy, figuring out how to work in certain details that the main character shouldn't really be aware of without actually telling those parts of the story from another point of view (the NaNo draft will have those other points of view, though, even if it means writing a flashback). And other things.

I will have pirates; once I finish the modern-day part of the story, that is. The FMC is stuck in an awful job, awful life, debt-ridden and underappreciated, then gets in a storm on a forced work trip to an island. There will be timetravel and pirates (the traditional kind: vanilla pirates?) and attempts on my part to make some of them more misunderstood opportunists than bloodthirsty thieves. Well, I'll have to do some bloodthirstiness, obviously. There's a revenge quest she gets tangled in, too. Wish me luck. Not sure if she'll stay with the pirates or if some of them will brave the 21st century...

I have a second-generation pirate as my FMC, and my MMC is a former pirate who was marooned by her dad (the first generation of the family business) and is now living as a 'decent' sailor but still plotting revenge. One guess whose pirate ship captures his merchantman and takes him home to daddy as a prize. Oh, and the merchantman also happens to be carrying the FMC's mother's husband (different from FMC's father) who is out to bring dear wifey home so as to get his mitts on her inheritance, and has legal muscle with him...annnnd they all converge in Port Royal in the summer of 1692, right in time for the earthquake.

My MC is a assassin turned pirate. So everything about the story revoles around pirates, seafaring and the on-going run from bountyhunters, other pirates and anyone who could possibly turn my band in.

I was telling my older sister about my MC, Adrian, and my sister said she is just way to dark/evil. I am not really sure how to make her less dark but still a killer. :/ The only thing she cares about is her old captain.. (Who i need a name for.. any suggestions?)

I just wrote a part about her finding her only living family member, her brother and she got really emotional and broke down crying to him and told him about how messed up her life is and how she cant do anything about it. So she does actaully have feelings.. even though I make her out to be a very head-strong non-sesitive kinda gal.

*shrugs* Yup.

Re: Pirates

I'm writing pirates! Come to think of it, I always write pirates. :)

Well, except recently, when I've been caught up in writing a whirlwind superhero story with my three sisters, and having more fun than a human being should be allowed to have.

But anyway, pirates. I've researched and experimented in this genre in so many ways, and I always find it's marvelous fun to come back to. The flavor of the 17th/18th century vocabulary is impeccably intriguing and occasionally intoxicating, and the raw human emotions and fleeting mortality of the Golden Age of piracy are also compelling.

In my stories, I like mixing traditional aspects (as in, eyepatches, kidnappings, cutlass duels, treasure hunts and marooning) with wildly nontraditional aspects (as in, djinn, watchmakers, mirror worlds, valets, and ancient Egyptian artifacts).

Also, I'm insanely secretive.

It was my NaNo 2011, so I decided I'd run with it :)

My pirates are basically only pillaging so that they can survive. But the pirate who the story centres around is pretty trigger-happy and arrogant, and determined to 'free the sky' from the people who decided to put themselves in charge.

I want to include stuff like sirens and treasure, but it's going to be a little hard up in the sky...
But by Blackbeard I'm going to try!

Re: Pirates

The fun about writing about pirates is the fact that writing is a freedom in which you can use in any way. You could go with the classic: Gruff men who smoke all day with a hand on their dagger, and talk in slang. Or you could go with something a bit more ironic or somewhat humorous: A friendly pirate who works for an evil crew yet doesn't agree with their actions, and secretly helps the good guys until his torture does him otherwise.
The pirates in any story can be very unusual. It helps spice up the story with something no one would've expected.

Let's see..... some musts for a pirate story? How about treasure, exploring sunken ships, a legendary object/person/place actually existing, mermaids♥, other countries' navies coming after you.... umm....... sea monsters? And rescuing princesses♥ hehe

You should totally do pirates because pirates rock and so does that plot. It reminds me of my favorite guilty pleasure pirate book (that may or may not have some erotica in it... what?). But really, your plot is great and sounds like a lot of fun. What's your other idea?

Re: Pirates

I came up with my pirate story within a few days of On Stranger Tides coming to theaters, but I'm sure that's a coincidence, considering I never got to see that one, and I came up with my main character in a dream

I did, however, watch a marathon of the first three movies because of my idea.

Good grief? Four crews? That's nuts. You're gonna have a blast with that, though! :D

When I was needing to flesh out my crew, I ended up asking friends for crewmates. Anything from a name to a full description would do, but the more wiggleroom I had, the easier it was to put them in. It ended up working out great! I also only have 10 or so named crewmen, everyone else is just background. You only need names for the people who are actually doing things for the plot.

Good luck! Also, you're in the same state as me. :) NC Pirates, whoo!
