Just killed my first character of this year, and yes its hard to do, you want to scream and cry and delete the file unless of course it was the villain...

How does it feel when you kill off a character, how does it feel to basically commit fictional murder? ;D

It's risky writing your main character into oblivion. It usually makes the reader think the whole storyline pointless, and thus shouldn't be done. It dos however, add a dramatic touch if a different less-main character dies. It's even better if you make the character that dies a very loveable or unique one.The main character, however, is what the story is all about, and killing them off should therefore almost end the story. If you have still decided that their fate should be met, make complications so suspenseful that the reader won't want to put the novel back on the shelf.

Not sure, I have killed trillions so far and then killed some more with Noah's flood. Have killed quite a few characters while writing and will probably kill more. Happens very frequently for me and characters that are annoying die faster than the ones I actually like. :)

AWESOME!! The only time it doesnt is when you did a bad job. Like, bang he's dead instead of, "And the man he thought was his friend raised the gun, as if in slow motion, and tightened his finger on the trigger."

I think it's important that characters who do dangerous things in adventure novels actually die sometimes. And sometimes they sustain permanent, life-altering injuries. Adventure is dangerous.
How it feels is different for everybody, but that's a great question to ask. How does it feel for the person who caused his death? Does it change that person? How does it feel for the character's best friend or love interest? How will it feel for the reader for this person to be completely gone from the plot? Or will she/he be gone? Maybe what the other characters think about the death will change everything.

Yeah, even though my one character can never die at times she is an emotional wreck and could not do much of anything for four years from 15 to 19 (yeah she had a gladiator tournament where 2001 gladiators were in the ring and she was the only survivor)

Genocide is great for word count.

yes it is actually.

Very truly, even if it was a predestined death count that had to happen. :)

I love killing my mojor characters, even the ones I like. Actually, I'm happily plotting the death of a love intrest right now. (Rather, I'm hoping desperately that the novel will work out in a way that allows me to kill someone improtant to the MCs.)

Aren't you supposed to not be emotionally attached to your characters?

Nonsense. If I didn't emotionally connect with my characters on some level I couldn't write about 'em, now could I? Emotionally connecting to my characters is the only thing that has ever let me finish most of my writing. And, yes, I've killed a lot of characters. It's hard, even when it's a loathsome villain, but at the same time it's exhilarating, because death necessarily creates so many plot ripples around it.

Character driven stories are easier to write when you can feel the character. :)

I killed my main character's father in the first chapter, and I felt nothing but the satisfaction of an awesome start to my story. However, when I tried to kill off a cockatrice in chapter 12, it was terrible, and I couldn't do it. Instead, it will serve as something important in the future =3.

The last book but one the character I was going to kill off at the end of chapter 3 completely refused to die before the end of the book. This time my first fatality happened right on queue, very much the way I'd outlined it as happening.

I was actually a bit surprised not to have a rebellion on my hands. I liked the character. I miss him, and I make sure that the other characters express the grief I feel about his loss, but I didn't have a struggle about his loss. Not at all sure why that is...

I didn't wan't to kill off my first character, but since I die, now I have pretty much killed off the entire cast of the first half of my story. Why? I have no idea, but that's writing for you. Now they've been 'replaced', in a sense, by a whole new line up, apart from my main character.

I actually introduced a character specifically so I could kill him later in this year's NaNo, because no one ever dies despite how dangerous everything is and I figured the trio needed a taste of mortality. It backfired because I made him just a little too awesome and I got too attached and then I felt really guilty about it when I had to shoot him in the head. :[

yeah, I killed my first character a while ago. Actually, I think it was the first chapter, maybe the second... I didn't feel so bad about it but that was because the character was getting on my nerves anyways. She had kidnapped my secondary FMC and made a clone of her...

I've killed several characters before and felt pretty bad about most of them but recently I had to kill my four year old female character and it broke my heart almost as much as it did the other characters! But it was without a doubt the most bittersweet moment of the book. Bitter because she died, sweet because it twisted the story so that I could write on a few different levels. (plus it sounded pretty good too!)

I've felt worse about letting good people die as apposed to killing them. This November, the only guy I've done away with onscreen was modeled after Charles Manson to begin with, so mostly I was happy that the guy who did it managed to go through with it. Instead of being executed, the way he was supposed to be.
