So! I'm sure you've all seen the epic Dares threads in some of the main forums. To help kick start your plot a bit, let's have our own little party here, shall we? Share your dares for Adventure stories!

Example:

* - introduce a character who forgot a vital eating utensil (say, a fork)
** - meet up with an indigenous group of peoples who have said eating utensil
*** - who then throw your character in prison for not possessing said eating utensil

* refer to the difficult of the dare, should you choose to accept it.

Re: Adventure Dares, 2011

I tried this for last year's NaNo =

* - Have a fight scene, in a kitchen, involving only kitchen utensils. No points for knives or frying pans.
** - Involve a cheesegrater.
*** - Involve a blender.
**** - Involve a dishcloth.

ALSO

* - Have a character communicate with their ally/partner through a wall using morse code.
** - Use a crowbar, because it's a thick wall.
*** - Use a machine gun, because it's a really thick wall.
**** - Use a teddy, because it's a thin wall, and there's nothing else handy, and they don't want the guards to hear.

What if the story is set in a time when blender's were not available (eg steampunk)? Pestle and mortar?

I've got my dares from last year still . . . let's see . . . oh, yes, they're on this post-it. :D

Have a battle between the heroes and the villains in a supermarket.

+ If they throw fruit and/or vegetables at some point during this fight
+ If someone shouts "Ahhh! Onions!"
++ If one of your heroes gets one of the villains by getting onion juice into their eyes
++ If one of your heroes gets onion juice in their own eyes
+++ If onion juice in anybody's eyes is the culmination of the fight
++++ If the villains have guns and the heroes only have onions, and the villains lose and run away

Invoke the trope <a href="http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OnlyAFleshWound" rel="nofollow">"Only a Flesh Wound"</a> in your novel.

+ If you subvert it
+ If your character is actually seriously injured, but invokes the trope as a joke or sarcasm
++ If it's not a serious injury at all, and one of your characters says this while slapping a band-aid on the other: "Just a flesh wound; you'll live."
+++ If this "wound" in question is a paper cut.
+++ If your character is actually significantly injured and this character puts hand salve or some other wildly appropriate thing, like chapstick, on the injury.
++++ If they use orange marmalade.

Take your favorite action movie and pick five <a rel="nofollow">tropes</a> from it, and invoke all of them in your novel.

+ If you pack all of them into one chapter.
+ If you subvert one.
++ If you subvert them all.
+++ If one of your characters mention the movie you picked the tropes from at any point.

Nano_bot and Sparta, I will definitely do your dares. Everyone else, I'll try my best, though the one about a foreign language isn't going to work at all for me simply because I'm using the Aliens Speaking English trope. Sorry.

Anyways, here's a dare of my own.

+Have your character attempt to get out of a situation using something they saw in Looney Tunes.
++Have it be something other than the 'Duck Season, Rabbit Season' trope.
++Have it actually work.

* Have a bored, jaded character who blandly comments on or mocks the action in between tense scenes.
** Have this character, and especially their jaded insight, be important to the plot instead of comic relief
*** Have this character ambiguously aware that they are in a story, and constantly predict the cliches and tropes in the genre
**** Calling these tropes and cliches out by the formal or common terms (such as tropes) for them.

*No cussing
(including the words damn, shit, ass, and hell, unless you're using damn as condemn and/or shit as poop and/or ass as a type of donkey and/or hell as a place [because those are the original meanings])

I've been putting a few dares in the general dare thread, but let's see if I can get a few good adventure ones going.

*After a daring maneuver or action-packed scene, have the character say 'And that's without a single drop of rum." /beer/insert their favorite poison here
**: If they try to take that drink afterwards and something happens so they don't get it.
***If they keep trying for that drink and don't get it throughout the whole novel.

*Have a character maneuver over/through/around some sort of an obstacle course of some sort (either natural or for some sort of training), and have them do it backwards.
**If they make it to the end.
***If they make it to the end, then get killed off/mangled/taken out of commission.
+If there's a good reason for them to do it backwards other than showing off.

That's all I've got for now. Have fun.

I tried this for last year's NaNo =

* - Have a fight scene, in a kitchen, involving only kitchen utensils. No points for knives or frying pans.
** - Involve a cheesegrater.
*** - Involve a blender.
**** - Involve a dishcloth.
Clearly I'm going to do this but I have another question. Can the characters use knives or frying pans at any point during the fight? If the fight starts by the villain attacking with a knife who promptly loses it only to continue with both using everything and anything they can get their hands on do I still get the points?

I did this last night after reading this dare:

“Yes, I’m fine. I’m impervious to damage, remember?” Marcus winked at her.
“Well, what on earth happened back there? How did you manage that when they all had guns?”
“You’re going to laugh,” said Marcus. Jessica raised one eyebrow skeptically. “I ran from where you were, hoping to sneak up and surprise them; perhaps get one of their guns.
“I took refuge behind a stand selling some kind of chicken pita. I started chucking some of the food at them, and ducking whenever they fired, when I got in a lucky shot. All that howling you heard was because I hit him in the face with an onion, and it exploded.”
“Oh my!” Jessica couldn’t think of anything else to say.
“And then when the other guy stepped out to help his buddy, I nailed him upside his head and knocked him out. And that’s when I ran and came and got you.” Marcus finished.
Jessica started snickering, “You beat two guys with guns, using only onions?” She asked incredulously.

++Have it actually work.

My story involves things escaping from the realm of imagination. I am SO using this.

Dare:

I have been attempting to do this anyway (sans the last bit) to keep it friendly to younger audiences. Although I've also been killing people and I'm not sure how that effects things. I'll try to add rainbows and daises at some point. The others would have to be in a dream or something because I don't have a world with mythological creatures.

You have the single best avatar ever. EVER.

DARES:

*Make one of your minor characters a dancer
**Make them incredibly clumsy when not dancing
*** Make them always end up really injured, but from dancing and/or knocking into things, not from fighting the big bad
**** Make them impervious to all harm that comes from fighting the big bad, but really injured anyhow

*Have an INCREDIBLY short character
**Have their catchphrase/favorite threat be "I can kick you in the face"
***Have them actually be able to do so...
****Even if their opponent is WAY tall

Have fun.

so using the quote, but changing 'rum' to 'Red bull' for an epic athleat story
