Looking for Competitors

Hi Nanowrimos --

Are you the type who thrives on competition? Someone who enjoys smack talk and could use a group to keep you accountable - daily - of your word count? Do you know, deep down, - if you were truly honest with yourself - that you'll most likely still be writing on the last day of Nanowrimo, trying to reach that (according to some) measly 50k?

If so, then this is the place for you! Save this forum link and come back each day to report on your progress, defend your honor, and (if you are ever so lucky), boast about your word count.

So, are you in? Respond below and friend everyone who posts, since it looks like (with the new website changes) our current word counts aren't posted anymore.

May the odds be in your favor,
InkTrace

I know I shouldn't post here but... I'm sure I could use some people who taunt me when I slack off, lol.

I'm at 11,067 words right now. But if my soon-to-be not-really-a-novel was a TV show, at this point we'd be about 10 minutes into the pilot. What can I say, I get wordy when I have the opportunity.

How are people doing?

I'm at 7.5k and I have the opposite problem. I feel like some of the chapters are really sparse but I'm not going back to editing them. That's for next month.

At this rate, I'm sure I can make the goal but...y'know...that's if I don't get real lazy.

Welcome, Lisa86 and E.M. Jeanmougin. Well, you two are definitely doing well, but I know from experience, a lot can happen in 30 days. It doesn't take much to get offtrack, and I'll send all of my distractions your way. I'm holding myself to the 1667 words a day, and I thought I was doing well. But if you two are my competitors, I suppose I have some writing I need to do!

I am also a prodigious word-spewer, apparently. I only got up to chapter 5 on my pre-November outline (out of 20-30?) but I'm still in chapter 1 with 8,000 words, and chapter 3 is going to be really long. At this rate I may *never* have to figure out what happens past chapter five.

Well, a published novel tends to be 75,000 to 150,000 words (depends on the genre), so looks like you're in good shape for that. But, since this is suppose to be slam talk here, I am going to point out to all of you that slow and steady is the best way to go. With those speeds, you're likely to burn out very soon!

Bring it on :p Current word count is 7,000. Tomorrow I have a 2 hour write-in and on Saturday I have a 2 hour train journey. Both with NO INTERNET! Followed by a stay in London with no Internet on my laptop (but one kinda clingy, neglected boyfriend so I guess that'll balance out the lack of Internet there.)

Basically, my word count is gonna SOAR! ;)

The Day 3 Curse, which happens to everything I start, hit me today and I wrote next to nothing until past 2.30 in the evening - I played Mahjong, for god's sake, even my procrastination sucked today - at which point I wrote about a thousand words in less than half an hour. I got a little carried away and elements of the governments of several alien races now look down on humans. Oops.

Right now I'm at 12,438 words, it's late but I'm not quitting till I hit 13k. Right now I'm kind of on a roll and explaining things I never intended to happen so I'll keep going for now. Sleep is for pansies anyway, am I right?

I don't see a word count from YOU either, InkTrace.

LadyTapreea, I would say you're above such pathetic excuses, but I don't know you yet. Prove me right, or prove me wrong - we'll see when you post your word count tomorrow.

Day 3 and I have 7,000 words (which seems like total slacking next to you folk!) and I'm up to chapter 6. Right now the chapters are pretty brief as I lay the ground work for the first people who are dying. Pretty soon we'll begin actually hunting down the killer and those chapter are three times as long.

I'm hoping to add 3,000 words/day since my final will be closer to 100,000 and it's just part 1 of a series. I wrote the sequel to this piece last year and that one needs to be extended. Then I'll write the companion pieces that revolve around the other characters.

Oh yay! Boasting! Ribbing! Procrastinating! My favorite things all in one thread. : )

LadyTapreea - that's freaking sweet! You better get writing on that thing! New computers are so exciting, it should be able to propel you forward out of sheer giddiness. Your post made me feel kind of giddy cause it reminded me of how I felt to get my new computer almost a year ago.

I'm at... 11,455. My goal for today is still 12,000 or more, since I'm trying to go with 3k a day for as long as I can stand to do that. I keep procrastinating... it got so bad today (I didn't start writing until after 5 and I do not have a job or school at the moment...) that I finally opened up Write or Die, wrote a scene twice, and broke the fourth wall, which I kept telling myself I absolutely would not do! I'll be back when I reach 12,000, and if I manage it without breaking any walls or impersonating Negative Nancy towards my own writing, I'll hand out some kind of virtual smile-inducing something-or-other.

*sigh* This is day four. I really should still be capable of coherency.

Alright, now we have a competition going!

So, it's still Day 4 here, we should be at 6,668 words. I know I'm slacking but that's only because I haven't written yet today. Thought I'd stir things up here before I get to work. But go ahead - send all your hits this way. I can take it.

LadyTapreea, what's this with 1,858? Are you even trying? You know Day 5 isn't too far behind, if it isn't already here for you. :-P

E.M. Jeanmougin, Kaleidoscope27, KellyinCA, and invdrzim - keeping just ahead of the daily average. You're only a few thousand ahead of me and I plan to beat you all tonight! You better start writing now or I'll be leaving you far behind!

lisa86, J.Kievsky, EMT-TKJ, and LilithDee - what's this 12,000+ word count? Don't you have lives? I encourage you to take a break, get some sleep, and maybe even add in some food. You're looking good, so no need to push yourself. Here's a some cheese doodles to remind you what food tastes like. I'd like to see you type with cheese fingers...

Alright, you all have been enough of a distraction. Time to work some magic!

LIVES? What are these LIVES you speak of? Do they have cheese puffs?

...I want to nom on cheese puffs now. Thanks a lot! And come on... you're almost a whole... 80something words from your word goal today! Where are those 80 words, huh? Huh?! xD

LilithDee, yes, lives do contain cheese puffs. You could also go to the movies and enjoy fresh popcorn (nothing but the best for you!). Something to think about, especially if you need a break. You could even call it research for your novel, since there's lots of hero movies out. :)

80 words have been claimed and more! I'm now trying to reach Saturday's goal. Your taunting is like cheers to my ears. But, I admit, I've beaten J.Kievsky's 2,643 word count for the day and I'm very satisfied with that. Oh, what the hell. I'll try to break 8k before I head to bed.

Re: Looking for Competitors

Dark Angel, you come in all cocky and already LilithDee (current leader!) and EMT-TKJ are ahead of you, with lisa86 not too far behind. You better get some writing - looks like you're in for a fight instead of cruising to the top. J.Kievsky could had reached you, if he/she had tried. (Apparently, it wasn't worth the effort)

invdrzim, I could have sworn you were at 8k yesterday. I was just a few hundred behind. Where did you pull 13k from? I'm impressed, or did I read your stats wrong? I really don't care for the new stats board. I was hoping to pass you tonight, but that's going to have to be another day. You're safe, for now. Why don't you kick back and take Sunday off?

E.M. Jeanmougin, you're now the person for me to beat. You're making it easy, with just adding 808 words today. At that rate, I'll have you passed tomorrow. Please, stay relaxed. No need to worry. My beating you was inevitable anyway.

Kaleidoscope27, what happened to this weekend explosion of words? You're barely keeping up with the daily average, though I admit that I went back to my story to add a few more words so I can be head of you. If this weekend was your burst of energy, I'd hate to see what next week is going to look like for you.

KellyinCA, you wrote even less than E.M. Jeanmougin. You're not going to make the finish line with that kind of progress! Just a friendly tip, since I'm way ahead of you. You may want to increase your daily average. Those 10k days are really painful and you'll be lucky to survive them. (Trust me - I've been there) Now get writing and become a contender in this competition!

akizakura, welcome to the race! That's gutsy jumping in today without adding any word count to your story. I not sure if you are hoping that declaring you need a kick in the butt would get you into gear, but I thought I'd send that kick *wammmmm* to get you started. Now get off the message boards and start putting some words to your story.

LadyTapreea, day 3 and you're still at 1,858? Folks, here's our first drop out! You're so not going to reach chapter two with that progress, let alone the end. I won't be referring to you again until you start seriously adding some words. :-P I could be using this paragraph adding to my own story...

DarkAngel: I'm coming for you, today or tomorrow. You really kicked back after that first 16k. At this rate, you won't be finished by the 25th, you'll be hunched over your computer while the rest of us are sitting back and enjoying our turkey.

Thanks for the good laugh, J.Kievsky! *lol* Hey, hey, I'm working full-time here and staying above the daily word count. My progress is right where it should be. If I wanted to blow through this 50k in less than a month, well, then what's the point of asking for competitors? No, I like the slow torture, the steady rhythm and the camaraderie of fellow writers for 30 days. Oh, and I really enjoy this hearty bantering... Your 17k isn't bad, but there was no polo game today and all you could do was write 1,767 words? I'm disappointed.

Re: Looking for Competitors

So, today's goal was 10,002. How did we do?

Well, looks like LilithDee has blown us out of the water at 26000+. I haven't seen her back on this board since she took BlackAngel's challenge and went to town with it. I'm guessing she's too good for us now. Maybe she'll show her face again, when she hits that wall that is inevitably coming. We'll see.

lisa86's also spending more time writing than here. Geez, should I take that as a hint? Nah. You have a long way before you reach, LilithDee. What are you waiting for?

I'm glad to see DarkAngel is making some progress, but time to kick it into gear if you're going to beat LilithDee. Sounds like that one and only post was only intended to be an incentive to us low word-counters than to keep oneself to a higher bar. Trying to make yourself feel good? Well, how did that work out for you? :-P

J.Kievsky, apparently, has found something else to entertain the time away, and decided to remain below 2k, once again. Seeing how easy yesterday's words were, I suppose the challenge here is to keep oneself from reaching 50k too fast, while the rest of us are trying to put all the words down as we can. But, seriously, I wonder how much you could write, if you were actually trying...

invdrzim, I need to thank you. I would had taken the night off, but you inspired me to kick your butt. Okay, I didn't put much distance between us, but I figure since you were so kind to let me get caught up, I'll give you an extra day to try and bury me. I will be cursing you tomorrow, though, when that darn alarm clock goes off. I'm sure you'll hear me.

Kaleidoscope27, I see that you just barely passed me last night. You should had padded that distance, now I hope you enjoy tomorrow's sprint to catch up! You can thank invdrzim for that.

akizakura, now you're talking! Almost 6k in one day. You keep that up and you'll reach LilithDee in no time. Someone has to put the pressure on her and I think you'll be the best person for the job. In the same breath, though, I don't feel worried yet. I'd like to see what you put out tomorrow. Think you can reach me? I'd like to see you try!

KellyinCA, just above the daily average. That would have been good enough for me, too, but as you see from our (active) writers here, that's not going to put you high on this board. Why don't you challenge yourself and try to beat Akizakura tomorrow? Apparently, it isn't impressive here to do 2k a day.

Alright, heading to bed. Happy writing!

I'm still doing a minimum of 2000 words a day, which is just fine. I don't need to be absolutely crazy about it.
I'm glad you are happy with your rate, but I don't think this is the right message board for you. I created this thread so that people can compete - push each other to do more and not slack off - and do it in a way that encourages friendly smash talking. Some people find this really motivating and I thought I'd create a place for them here. It sounds like you do not, and that's fine. But you may want to join a different thread that will fit your needs - perhaps the first one posted on this Age Group: 20's forum "Looking for Writing Buddies" or the forum "Shout Out" in the Category "Life During Nano".

Re: Looking for Competitors

After a poor showing this weekend, I decided to start the week off doing less blustering and more working. Looks like I was the only one! So I'll kick back after this and let InkTrace blow some more hot air around, since at ~400 words per rant, we're apparently infuriating enough to waste a quarter of a day's word count on. Really, I'm flattered, InkTrace, but all those words would be so much more impressive in your novel. 1223? You can pull all of that bravado out of your &@# [let's play it safe] but you can't pull 444 more words out of there too?

Lisa86: Apparently she only gets inspiration once every two days or so, or maybe there was just 20k worth of story there. Stumbling behind the frontrunners, and with such a good start.

Invdrzim: What happened? You had a good thing going there and then apparently spent all Sunday sleeping. Bogging down. Though, I see you have a few more hours left in your day, so there's time to make Monday worth waking up for.

Writeandknow: You can't let those characters tell YOU what to do. But then, you've just got barely enough discipline to keep that word count inching up at par. So let's grow a spine, tell those characters to sit down, shut up, and let yourself squeeze the words out of every resulting bruise and bloodstain from that kidnapping scene.

LilithDee: ...
I got nothing. Although, you seemed to have hit a rough patch. Boring chapter? Writer's block? Either way, I think it's time for that vacation you always wanted to take, the one that involves spending no time waiting in airports or bus terminals where you can just relax. Maybe you'll come back refreshed enough to pick up the pace a little.

Hey, J.Kievsky, I made it over 13k yesterday (13,096)! If you are going to insult me, at least get my word count right. :-P No long rant tonight, since you did such a nice job giving everyone a kick in the butt (and you are right - my words are precious!). Seeing how you almost wrote 6k (seriously, couldn't get three more words in?), not a bad job tonight. But I assume this was a fluke, and tomorrow's words will be lucky to hit 1k. Probably 97. But hey, you have plenty of time now. No need to finish this race at day 14. Take the week off. Got any more polo games to watch?

Haha, oh. Yeah, well, I blame invdrzim for that. I only had to beat 13k. You'll love my 1,673 tonight. I made it past the daily average! Inspired from yours truly, too, since I thought it was too late to write but then you called me out and I realized I can't leave my word count at zero for the day. I may even write before work tomorrow, but as each minute brings me closer to the wee hours of the morning, uh, probably not.

Welcome, writeandknow, whoaJeffrey, and kittymammas,

I hope you all return for the smack talking. With all of you in 13k, I'll bask in my lead ahead of you tonight. Especially since, uh, J.Kievsky and invdrzim are ahead of me right now. I'll catch up to invdrzim tomorrow, so not worried there. And J.Kievsky is talking a big game, but they're at that halfway point which just slows everything down. I imagine J.Kievsky will be back to 2k a day, if that.

@Kievsky Why hello there weekend warrior. All I have to say is you can rest for now, but be aware that I am the reason nobody likes Mondays. Will be aiming for 25K tomorrow!

@InkTrace I see you've steadily been keeping above the daily average...but just barely. Congrats on joining the ranks. Let me know when you hit 15K; I just hit 16K with just a few minutes until midnight :brushes off shoulders:

@woahJeffrey & @kittymammas Fresh meat! Let's see if you can keep up.

No no, that's ok, you go ahead and take the day off. You sound like a busy guy - you deserve it. You're ahead, and after a nice break you'll be well prepared for day 2 of... doing absolutely nothing. Just watch that progress bar flatline - it's actually kind of poetic. You'll see!

And what better way to boost morale around here than to let everyone else get way ahead of you? We'll all feel like superstars! Oh, no, wait - I'm already ahead of you, as are many other people. Nevermind.

27,325. Wow, compared to you, EMT-TKJ, my word count makes me want to stay up until I catch up with you, but hey, still destroying most of the rest so it's all good. With a rate like that you should be finished by now - what gives? - but I see from your stats that your daily count is likely a fluke, so we'll see how you go tomorrow. Do that again and I'll be impressed.

Everyone still taking it easy? Slow and steady finishes the race? Indeed it does, and we'll be waiting for you at the finish line. By all means, take your time.

That leaves me at 31331 for the day.
Of course, I can try to beat out another 10k tomorrow. I don't have any homework or ambulance shifts tomorrow.. and only one class and a write in.

We shall see. We shall see.

Wow, what did you all smoke tonight to put in all of those words? Seriously, some of you have UNBELIEVABLE skyrocketed word counts. I'm comforting myself with the thought that editing is going to be a .... bear, whenever you get to that.

Sadly, I just put in a 12 hour day at work/at home doing work. I'd force myself to write some words tonight, but I think my long nights have finally caught up to me and just stringing these last few sentences has been rough. Since I have to run a book group tomorrow and need to be coherent, I will have to bow to all of you and try to catch up tomorrow. Well, maybe not catch up. Maybe just do better than the daily average.

I'm glad to see you all are enjoying this thread, though I never intended you to be this inspired. Talk about that backfiring... *lol*

Re: Looking for Competitors

Sweet! Our word counts are now posted below our icons. Definitely handy! Though, I suppose I shouldn't be too excited since that means everyone can easily see where I'm at... Give me a few hours of sleep and then I'll show you what I can do with a few solid hours of writing. That's right, you can hold me to it!

Looks like I got too comfortable and everyone passed me by. invdrzim and whoaJeffrey, I'm coming for you. Now may be a good time to start writing or you'll be honored with my bottom spot. It's lonely down here, with a few annoying plot bunnies, I definitely don't recommend it.

Looks like writeandknow finally has the priorities right and the novel got the time it deserved over the internship. But it's only day 10, so that may be one long struggle. We'll see who wins!

Laughing Panther and kittymammas, not bad progress. You both passed me over the two days, but not so far that I don't feel like I can't catch up. If you want to intimidate me, you have to do better than that!

Lisa86, J.Kievsky, and EMT-TKJ, you do know that this competition is 30 days long, right? You rush and finish your novel by the 15th, what are you going to do? I envision sad days ahead of you. I've finished nanowrimo early once and let me tell you, it wasn't nearly as exciting as the day I was down to the wire. Early is like rolling to a quiet stop with your seat belt on. But on the last day, when your hands are shaking since you're hoping your word count will be validated before Dec. 1st ticks the end of nano - that's when you get the grand finale with fireworks and shooting wine corks. I feel sad that you'll be missing that moment. It's one of my favorite parts of nanowrimo. Call it making the winning shot in right before the buzzer - that's the excitement that makes my 30 days of writing worthwhile. But then again, maybe your novels are just so good that having them written is enough for you. Which is fine, I suppose. Each to their own.

Good morning slackers! snce we're playing the excuse game, I'd like to point out I took a day off yesterday to give you a chance to catch up. I had togo get bloodwork done, and alas, the doctor won't let me play on my laptop in the office.

No worries, though. I've churned out 2k in the last hour, which means (Kitty Darling) I'm back in the race. Take a deep breath, because today all you're going to taste is blood, sweat and the mud created by your tears and the dust I'll leave you in.

By the way, Kittymammas, I took a day off and I'm only 100 words behind you? Are you sleeping at the computer?

Ink- I'll hold you to it! You've got a long way to go, buddy. I'm just starting the day and I'm already smoking you.

EMT-TKJ- I can't help but be inpressed, but can you keep that pace up for more than a few days? We'll see....

Irish- I work six hours today, but I bet I get as many thousand words. Think you can do that too? I dare you to try.

Oh lots of reasons, I see you got that awesome head start on day one. I didn't start my nano until half way through the day on the first and well didn't write much. I actually have been doing the bare minimum and sometimes not even hitting that dang daily goal and then I found this wonderful thread! After I saw all the funny smut talk I was inspired to join the rank and took my word count pretty far over 24hrs, I think it was nearly 6k. But yesterday was my birthday and well I didn't much done on my nano. I'm hoping for another 6k day on Friday or higher =).

Your not even allowed to get dressed tomorrow, let alone do something other then writing until you've caught up. So tomorrow you will roll outta bed, grab a mug of inspiration, sit at your desk and write your NANO..if you want to eat that is.

invdrzim, I'm ahead of you! Time for you take advantage of our time difference and get some writing in!

Irish_Carbomb, are you in this thread or are you just off in lala land? Time to come back and defend your status! Once again, you're back at the bottom, but you gave me a run for my money tonight. I have tomorrow off, so watch out!

kittymammas and Laughing Panther, you're next on my list. It's great seeing you here on this thread, keeping me accountable to my word count. Not sure what happened to my fellow competitors listed above.

writeandknow and ghost.writer042, probably the two politiest people here on this thread. Feel free to jump in with the smash talking. It's half the fun and look at the good it did for kittymammas and Laughing Panther. They skyrocketed the first day they joined here. Let's call it the "Smash talk" bump. Go for it!

DarkAngel, yeah! Give J.Kievskya and lisa86 a run for their money! They've had it too easy. Milk that write-in for all you got.

And for you, EMT-TKJ, I have here a pillow and blanket. I assume you are still collapsed on the keyboard, so I hope that makes you a little comfortable. Congratulations! Now what will you do? Kinda sad it's over, isn't it?

Re: Looking for Competitors

Good morning!

I ws super pleased to see EMT rocking it out above 50k this morning. Makes me want to work harder.

KittyMammas, you better get going, I've already slid back past you and I still have two hours before I have to leave for work...Your birthday is over darling, so no excuses now! Also, I love small weddings, dont you? We got married out of our home, under the big tree in our back yard. I made my wedding dress and it was red! My mom was so mad. Also, I got to wear huge boots. Rather like the ones I'm wearing to kick your word count with.

Ink- You said you have the day off, so I expect great things for you. I also think we should hold off on the "Smack Talk Bump" just yet, seeing as how it seems exclusive to people with a cat reference in their screen name. Maybe we should call it the kitteh bump instead...haha. Seriously, though, you better bring at least 6k today or I'm totally razzing you tonight. If I can do it on a full work day, you can do it on your day off.

Kalidescope...you may be passing Ink, but can you pass me and Kittymammas? We'll see. There's some seriously hard core writers in here, and I've got plans to smoke them all.

Dark Angel- You may be ahead of me, but if you don't want me to breeze past you tonight, you better keep your eyes on the prize, and by the prize, I mean the office program you're writing in. You may be ahead of me now, but that may not last, my friend. In fact, it probably won't....

Firstly I wanted to shout out at the top of my lungs “WAY TO GO EMT!!” You did it and we are all left in your awe.

@Ink-whew, you flew through them words my friend…isn’t it nice to know your thread is working?

@Irish-don’t be afraid of us, its really all just fun and games hunny…come out and play =).

@Panther-I love the Red dress and the fact that you made it. If your wedding is your day then why go follow the herd right? As for your word count, look at you go…I might not catch you, but I sure will try. I had to write one of those ‘emotional’ scenes last night…ugh…and I got well, emotional. Better now and got my outline primed for whats to come.

@Kalidescope-I really hope you make it a 6k day or your never catch me or panther.

@Dark angel-I hope you know that there’s others coming your way!

Kitty's got claws, and they’ll be out all day and all night!

@ Emt: I should hope so. At the end of the competition I want you to surpass all of us. Except for me, of course. I like the hat in your avatar by the way. ~ I know that's not trash-talking but I couldn't resist. If you're not ahead of the rest of us, with, like I said, the exception of me, well.... *Grins evilly*

To all of you who are still behind, my novel has some torture in it and I'm researching more, so BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU STEP. *Turns off caps lock now*

You're quiet today, Laughing Panther. Are you hoping no one will notice your 28k? kittymammas's trying, but she hasn't reached you yet. Maybe I will tomorrow. I'm feeling pretty optimistic right now. I hope you know that your comment holding me accountable for my word count today has really sprang me into action. Thanks! (And, of course, the feuding with Kaleidoscope27 and ghost.writer042 has kept that BIC. I just can't give up a good competition...)

I've spent the majority of the day transcribing about 2000 words from my notebook. I have to say, I'm not a fan of having to do that, even if I love the feel of paper and pen. I finally added about a thousand on, and hope to get a couple k in today. I've really done more editing today than anything else.

Do you think that's wise considering some of use are churning out 6-8k a day? Keep your eyes peeled. You'll see me on the horizon in no time.

Kitty, I notice that your word count is steadily rising, but surely you've noticed the sun has set? I thought so.

Also, Ink? What do you mean you did well for today? I don't know what time zone you're in, but where I am I've still got a good six writing hours. You're acting like you need to eat, and have a life! Its November! We don't have time for that!

Kalidescope- You keep talking fancy about that word count, but I don't see you on mine or Kitty's heels just yet. Pride cometh before a fall. Watch your feet friend...I'm sprinting, are you?

@Lisa-Don't you just love those scenes that your have been waiting to write. The wait just seems to make it that much sweeter!

@Ink-you were a noveling machine yesterday!

@EMT-I did a few scenes by hand and I noticed that in copying them over I did a lot of editing myself however it gave me a lot more words as I went.

The rest, come on and keep up! It's your story and you want to write it, right?

Right- now that I'm awake...

I'm back! Don't think, Lisa, that you're off the hook. I just spent an hour half asleep at the computer and still managed to turn out over a thousand words. Now that I'm awake and back in action, you better go ahead and keep putting the distance between us. Weekends are bad for me. I have early morning and weeknights off. *and* i'm starting my vacation on Thursday and I don't work again until Black Friday. I've got all the time in the world to fly by you this week!

Kittymammas- is the weekend bad for you too? I didn't see too much progress. I gave you two whole days and you still didn't pass me. A kindly tip- when writers block hits put an astersisk there and write a note about what you want to go there. Skip to the next part and get back to writing! You'd be suprised how much the scene you skip will write itself when you aren't looking at it. Give your characters a second to act up while you aren't watching them. Nice part over. Now, get back to work. You've got at least 3k today if you want to pass me at my current count, and I promise you, I won't stay there for long.

Kalidescope- You may be coming for kitty, but you're never going to catch me!

J. Keivsky- Watch the count friend, I'm a hop, skip and a sprint behind you.

Ink- where are you pal? Get back in the saddle. The weekend is over. That's work week start today. I expect at least 3k from you or I'm going to be really disappointed. You can't let Kalidescope come into this thread on your invitation and beat you! You've got this. You know you do. Write.

Also, as a group, do you think we've hit 50k on words in this thread yet? I was thinking about that this morning.

Re: Looking for Competitors

Hey Panther. Yeah the weekends aren't usually the best for me because I really enjoy those days home with my kids. I make pancakes, watch massive amounts of cartoons, paint toes and play outside. Also, writer's block was the least of my worries these past few days, my four year old has the tummy bug and well I was really amazed I got in the words I did between bathing her, washing her clothes, making soup and well she really just wanted me near her to feel like its okay. She is home with daddy today so hopefully she will be doing better by the time I get home. I am gonna try and get some writing in but Can't make any promises. I am pretty happy to be over 30k though, seeing as how I was so afraid I wasn't going to be able to do this!

I'll be back with more trash talk once I get my word count back on track!

C'mon Ink! You're losing sight of me ;) Sucks that you lost Internet though. Ours went down on Friday but I fixed it on Saturday by rebooting the modem and router. I feel at a loss without it!

Panther - I'm only less than 4,000 behind you! It's not that far in writing terms. I could knock that out in an hour if I put my mind (and fingers!) to it.

And I agree on the skipping bits out to beat writer's block. I hit a really slow part and got so stuck in it. I jumped ahead to a death scene xD But it really boosted my word count to write a scene I could get stuck into and then I went back later to link the bits together.

Oh goodness bless your little one's heart! I hope she's feeling better. If you don't mind, I'll light a candle for her. I know how it feels to want to be snuggled when you're sick. My lovely wife was sick about two weeks ago and she was so sad! I completely understand. Also, you're doing great. Especially if this is your first go at Nano. You're doing awesome. Also, since I am leaving for vacation this week, I'll disappear for almost 5 days. Of course, I might get lucky and have free wi-fi in the hotel, but then again, I might get lukcier and not have time to novel!

Keep your chin up.

Thank you so much Panther, she is doing 100% better however she gave it to me lol. Better me than her, I can handle an upset tummy just fine...the pink bottle is my hero haha. There is no greater healing power then just being close to the ones you love. When I feel bad, just having my hubby near makes me feel instantly better. I'm not writing today, its been rough on my house and I'm just wondering who's next to get it , I bleached and sanitized EVERYTHING! Anyways, enjoy your vacation and yeah your doing great so let your book sit. This is my first nano and I'm thrilled at where I'm at.

Everyone else great job! and you dusted me kaleidoscope! I'll return soonish....

The Words Written Today thingy in my stats is busted today and stopped at 1355 words, so I kept writing just to get above the minimum daily word count at least and didn't realize it wasn't working till I'd written well over 3000 words. Oh well.

Re: Looking for Competitors

Alright, unplanned break, but that crazy run on Friday means I am still ahead of the game.

But where am I compared to all of you? Today's goal was 25005. Looks like everyone but whoaJeffrey has made that milestone. Dude, what's holding you up? I may have taken a few days off, but I had the word count cushion to do it. Forget the checks, you need to start writing to keep up that dignity! No homework excuses, either, that's what you have December for.

lisa86 is close to being the second one to cross the 50k finish line. Think you're going to do it tonight? Or, since it is only 15 days, think you'll hang back and just write a few words a day? You have the luxury for that, though I doubt the self restraint to hold back...

J.Kievsky, you're not far behind. You are on the same time zone as me? I guess that means you could finish tonight, if you wanted to. But I doubt you want to end so soon, so I give you another week.

DarkAngel, what happened? The way you were talking, I was expecting an explosion of words. I guess you should stay away from those Write Ins. Just 500 words? You can do that better than that, at home, with your eyes closed! Lucky you, you're still 3rd. Lucks running out, though...

writeandknow, I'm glad to see that you're starting to make some headway! No more asking for a kick, looks like you're a roll. Better keep with it as long as you can or you may hit that slump everyone below has apparently run into over the past few days.

As for the rest of you (Laughing Panther, kittymammas, Kaleidoscope27, and ghost.writer042), no wonder this thread has been so quiet! Apparently, everyone's been taking a few days off. Hey, you all earned it! Don't rush back, you're still ahead. Kaleidoscope27 and ghost.writer042, how kind of you not to get too far ahead. As I had shown on Friday, I have no problems with writing 7k in one day. Enjoy that lead, you won't have it for long!

nesser_z, welcome to the race! You're the next person for me to beat, just a thousand ahead. Looks like you haven't even written today, so you'll be easy to pass. I'll be sure to thank you for the motivation when I sail on by!

Is that everyone? Oh, yeah, there's EMT-TKJ, who just doesn't know how to stop. Seriously, that writing chart shows progress EVERY DAY. Girl, you've got us beat and yet, that novel just isn't coming to an end, huh? Sucks to be you!

Okay, off to make good on my threats. *cracks knuckles*

Re: Looking for Competitors

Isn't that the truth? Two years ago, I had an old novel that I've been working on and off for years and had a solid outline, and I decided I'd start it over again for nano. I hit most of my major plot points, but, man, did things change! For starters, my cool and moody main character became very chatty. Good for nano and the word count, but definitely wasn't what I was expecting. You put a chatty character in those preplanned scenes and EVERYTHING changes. I'm actually considering rewriting that story again and bringing back the cool and moodiness. I don't want to ditch my nano novel but I'm wondering if it'd make an interesting "alternate reality". There must be a way to tie the two together...

That sounds pretty interesting actually, the alternate reality. And this nano is a recreate of the first novel I tried to write about 3 years back and it is nothing like what it was all the years ago, like seriously not even close. But I'm pretty pleased where my chars are going except I have an evil prince who keeps trying to become the love interest of his rival's princess and I keep telling him it wont work but he won't listen and tries anyways.

Sadly I don't think I will get many words in today...my day is booked with annual evaluations at work and Christmas shopping after work. But I'm cozy where I'm at, for now.

Well done Lisa! That's awesome!

I haven't written anything since Monday evening (almost 48 hours of no writing now). Other Stuff suddenly keeps getting in the way! How dare Real Life decide it needs attention.

I'm going to sit down with a hot drink (and maybe a hot water bottle! My feet are freezing. Winter has arrived for sure!) later and go for 35K (I'm staying on your tail kitty! - pun totally intended) My aim is 50K by the end of Sunday but with my boyfriend visiting from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon that may not happen. But, never say never ;)

Thanks guys! @kittymammas: It can be done now if I want it to be, or I can keep writing. I don't want it published, I'm just writing to get the story out of my system and to revisit writing for the first time in years, and November just happened to be right around the corner and I'd been wanting to to NaNo for years - but there's heaps more I could go into and gaps I could fill, so I'll write more if I feel like it... I've thought about aiming for 100k but I'm not sure.

Since this thread is what it is, instead of saying something encouraging I'll just say this: BIC and write, slackers! Excuses are for people who don't know what they want.

I want to and need to write so bad but everything else gets in the way! Christmas parade floats (I'm working on three, my company's, daycare's and girl scouts), baking and cooking for holiday events, ugh...I need to write. I'm gonna try and get 5k today but it will have to be during work hours because my hubby and I have a date tonight, dinner and a movie and he got a sitter for the night. Obviously no writing will be going on at home lol.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Re: Looking for Competitors

Three are now crossed the 50k line now. (Congrats to lisa86 and J.Kievsky!) I don't know what you'll do for the next 12 days but gloat, but I suppose you earned it. Question now - will you get the rest of your novel finished before December or will your progress slow to, uh, my speed?

DarkAngel is in good position to finish next, but the confidence is lacking. With only 3k to go, I wonder why is that? Not close to the end?

Looks like Kaleidoscope27 has passed Kittymamma, now looking good as the next one to follow Dark Angel to 50k. But the lead isn't much, and I'm curious to see if Kittymamma can indeed reach 45k by Sunday. With her 17k outline (how far are you into it by now? Halfway? Almost done?), there must be much still to write. But Kaleidoscope27 is no stranger to 3k a day, so it could be a tight race there. And, you still have to worry about Laughing Panther, who is bound to come back any day now.

ghost.writer042, I almost forgot you were even on this board! When you coming to defend your status? You're just barely above the daily word count, slacker. Is that why you are hiding your face? Hey, I'm still checking in here, so should you. Oh, and watch your back. I'm a-coming!

whoaJeffrey, it looks like you are now an inspiration to our newest sucker - er, contender - stolen_valkyrie. It's the weekend, finally, and no excuse for you to not hit 31k by the end of tonight. That's right - 1k over the recommended limit. We all know how rough the week is for you, so give yourself some cushion! (And make stolen_valkyrie sweat to keep up!)

Laughing Panther, still on vacation? You're one daring soul! I still haven't reached you, so I won't taunt you yet. But that day is coming, my friend, so you better come back soon!

I'm about 2/3's done with my outline and I'm really hoping to get to 45k by Sunday but dang people want me to volunteer all my extra time for holiday events and such so we will see. I'm trying to get at least 5k today but so far I've only gotten 2k (for some reason my word count on my nano says 3k but that's not right) and my coworkers keep feeding me all this good food and it's making me sleepy which drastically effects my word count LOL. Well next scene and this is another of those one's I've been looking forward to...

Re: Looking for Competitors

Day 19 has ended. What's the damage?

EMT-TKJ has taken the cake with her FINISHED novel. Definitely the top dog on this board with 81344 words. She more than doubled my word count, so I bow to you!

J.Kievsky is taking the scenic route to 60k and DarkAngel is enjoying a break at the finish line, though we should see a return soon if that novel is ever to be finished. lisa86 has plateaued at 50k and seems to be done with this competition.

kittymammas almost made goal of 45k, but she's leading the pack. That must be satisfying!

Kaleidoscope27 is next behind her, apparently very comfortable with that 40k. Yeah, don't rush it, Kaleidoscope27. You still have 10 more days, so take some time to think about your story and that awesome ending. Gotta end on a bang!

Laughing Panther (I'm sure) isn't laughing anymore. That vacation may have taken more than she had bargained for. If she doesn't write tomorrow, even I will have passed her.

I can feel ghost.writer042 breathing down my neck, so I won't be staying in the 35k long. You got the energy to keep up with me tomorrow?

And, whoaJeffrey, has finally joined the house! After days of little to no action, he's proven that yes, he can actually reach the blue line. But can he maintain that word count? That's the question...

To my credit, I only started writing my manuscript two weeks ago (8th of November). Still, my word count is 22,600 so I'm bopping along at a decent enough clip. Problem? I seem to be slowing down and I think it's because I'm going TOO fast. I'm sure you bunch can empathise with that one. I keep having to go back to make sure what I wrote the day before actually makes sense.

Also, I have my doubts about whether or not I'll finish by the November deadline . . .

So I'm really glad I at least won nano and I'll have plenty of time to devote to her care without worrying about word count. Poor baby, she is my sick one. My oldest never gets sick, my youngest was born early and catches everything.

Okay, folks, here's the deal.

I'm tired of writing, my fingers hurt, and I've got a six-thousand word deficit to make up. There's only one thing I've got going for me.

I'm an Irishman.

So. Who's ready to smack me around? Who wants to tell me I can't make it? Who wants to let me know I'm not good enough to be a real writer, that I should just quit now?

InkTrace, my friend, I see that you are one of the only people on this page with a word count not all the way across the line. I'm coming after you, champ. Those 7,359 words are mine.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving off, buddy, you deserve some rest after 40 K while I tie my foot. Just ignore that sound behind you - it's merely my foot slamming the accelerator to the floor.

Good luck! I'm off for a long, long rest. ;)

You see that? That's right -- my status went from blue to purple! I think I like it that way. :) I think I'm the last to reach this party, but I brought my famous fudge! Trust me, it's worth the wait.

Wow, you all are too nice here, I don't know what to do with all this appreciation. But to return the love, I couldn't have done this without you. Thanks for jumping in this thread and continuing to come back and give me some good laughs, some good word wars, and kept me accountable for my progress. It's funny - I know I can do 50k (I've done this enough), but without this friendly feuding, I know I'd never have the steam to finish this competition. Glad to see there are other like-minded souls out there.

You can be sure that I'll invite you back next year! Should we up the challenge and everyone has to finish their novels one week earlier than this year? ;-) Just kidding. No, seriously, I'm thrilled to be done just two days early. Forget that idea...

Very helpful! Like having your own personal drill sergeant yelling in your face whenever you go on the forums. :)

Congrats Ink! I'll be looking you up next year! But I will also be sticking around the forums as I want to edit and rewrite and transform this mass of words that only makes sense to me, into a novel others may read.

Haha. Hey, some people need coddling, other people need a swift kick in the pants. Each to their own! (Though, I think I was pretty nice this year. More in "announcer" mode than "drill sergeant". I'll work on that just for you, J.Kievsky)

Great! Sounds like you have a novel worth keeping. Mine's going in the sock draw. Maybe next year I'll write something worth revising. :) (These days, my focus is on short stories anyway. I love nano in that it gets the novels out of my head and then I can keep focusing on my short stories.)

Did you guys really think I did write while I was on vacation? Silly children. I was a busy, busy girl. Congrats to you all! I'm so proud of you Kitty, this being your first year and having so much going on.

I'm still laughing, ink. I promise. :) I might cry soon, though. I don't know when this neovel is going to finish itself, so it looks like I'll be busy well into december....

Welcome back, Laughing Panther! With all of your progress at the beginning of the month and then no return, I thought something might have happened on to you on your vacation. Glad to see you're fine and, apparently, doing really well on that novel. Hurry and validate, like EMT-TKJ said. You've only got a few hours left and that's a lot of writing to not claim!

Re: Looking for Competitors

Yeah....I tried. It craashed my computer trying to copy and paste the dang thing, because my computer was made in 2002. Bad day. At least I backed up the novel, right? So I have it, and the pride of knowing that I finished well. I'm cool with that, even if I don't get the awesome prpleness. (Which I am immensly bitter about)

If you guys stick around, I'd behappy to let you know how things turn out. I assume everyone is going to keep writing, yes?

I was so pleased to see how well you guys did. :)
