Is anyone nervous about editing their novel after this month?

As someone who's going to actively purse publishing this particular story. I'm almost dreading going back through my novel, I want to find someone who will go through it with me and mark what doesn't add up or outright seems very stupid.

Or just hire an editor and let him mark up the manuscript to his heart's content.

Anyone else feeling this way?

Oh, absolutely! I am trying so hard not to go through and edit now but I am dreading it all the same, becuase I know there's going to be a lot of work to be done. Luckily my partner is willing to go through it with me and she is going to be a great help in keeping me from hitting my head against a wall or crying.

Re: Is anyone nervous about editing their novel after this month?

Definitely. I'm really into the idea for my story and I would like to work on it and improve it, but I know it's in bad shape right now. It kind of freezes me up sometimes when I'm writing because I want so much for it to be good, but I spent too long writing dull parts in the beginning and it's missing some emotional oomph.

I'm a little afraid I'll never get that back into the story and that editing and rewriting will be a disaster.

I'm terrified of going back and actively editing it. Right now I'll go back a little ways and read some of what I last wrote (the day after) just to get me reacquainted with where I am (I'm working without an outline so cut me some slack) and I do a bit of editing then, but I'm trying to keep that to a minimal.

<.< I actually plan to rope my girlfriend into helping me edit my novel after November. She just doesn't know it yet. ^_^ But it's cool, I know she's dying to read it (plus, she reads SUPER FAST, so this is a WIN idea).

Terrified. This is The One I want to edit and throw out there to publishers. I started it last NaNo so right now I'm storming towards the end of it. It'll end over 100,000 words in length, I'm estimating 120,000 tops. Then I have to edit it. I'm not looking forward to that!

I think I'm gonna go through it once as much as I can, edit the major issues I had with the beginnings, add in names and places and dig out a map of some areas so my descriptions fit what it's supposed to look like. And then I'm giving it out to my boyfriend, my best friend and one other person who I've yet to decide on.

Remember. If you get one good word for every ten (or substitute "sentences" or "paragraphs" or "pages," if you like), you're doing well.

And I'll bet you...every one of us are doing well. :)

I'm actually excited. Getting rid of all those typos I've been leaving in is going to be a liberating experience for sure. After that, it seems less exciting, but I'm planning on doing this for a living, so whether it's exciting or dull doesn't have a whole lot of bearing on whether I'm going to do it or not.

I'm actually looking forward to it! I'll admit, I pulled an idea from thin air on day five. I'm now 10k words in (catching up, yay!) and watching the characters actually develop. I'm been talking over plot points with my husband and will be asking for help from others as I go on.

Since I had no idea where I was going in the beginning, I look forward to going back and editing it. Of course, I'm odd like that. I am aware that I will have moments of, "Oh. My. God. What have I gotten myself into?" But I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

I'm a bit nervous... going into this without a particularly clear plot, with my world-building stuff changing itself around in the middle of things... without names for most of the minor characters. ~_~* I DO want to see this published, though. I've been dreaming of getting this particular story written and published for 14 years now (ever since I came up with the idea while waiting for my ride home back in 9th grade). I know the editing is going to be a LOT of work.... and I am thinking I need a way to keep on-track to get it done. I can probably depend on my mom to help out at least a little (she's been waiting to read this story since before I started writing it, and I plan on sticking that in the dedication).

Maybe we should set up a 'revisions and editing' group? Sorta help each other with various things? That way we don't have to just focus on our own work? Or maybe I'm completely off.... ~_~* I dunno.....

I'm not nervous about revising itself. I always did the revision parts during the four years that I studied, so I think I'll manage.. The problem is the amount of pages I will need to revise.. And the lack of a decent printer. If I don't find a printer that I can use (I'm not in school, nor do I have a job at the moment where I could use the thing), the whole revising process is going to be one major disaster xD

Also, I'm a bit worried that I might not spot the mistakes I made in my grammar, as English is not my mother tongue..

I can't wait to edit. This first draft is just like an artist's pencil sketch - I'm looking forward to breaking out the paints when it's done. Like anyone who's ever done any kind of creative writing course will be able to tell you, writing is rewriting and all that...

For anyone in here worrying about reading back over their work, there's one thing to remember: your second draft is *always* better.

A little. I've already gone back and added some scenes earlier in the story and I got to reading some of it. The story isn't complete crap, but I'm a little worried about adding scenes and chapters to stretch out the relationship to where they get to the point where they are now. I'm not sure how I'm going to do that, but I'll probably figure it out.

Re: Is anyone nervous about editing their novel after this month?

Editing is always painful. Fortunately, there's a lot of great sites out there that have beta readers that will swap editin work with you. Its a great way to network in the writing world. My last beta got her novel published, I was so proud.

Think of this as draft zero, and you'll be okay. There's going to be a lot of stuff you have to add. And you wouldn't believe how much stuff you have to take out. Even the stuff you love. It happens all the time. Remember this is a work in progress, and writing is organic, it has to evolve.

That said, yes, I am terrified of the mess that is my novel right now. I keep ignoring all the tense shifts and all my mistakes and lack of research because I want to get through it. The thought of cleaning it up later? Its daunting.

Re: Is anyone nervous about editing their novel after this month?

I'm a little nervous about editing. But I've edited one of my Nano projects before, and honestly, editing can be really exciting -- much different from writing a first draft, but still exciting.

Two years ago, I "won" Nanowrimo for the first time, but at 50,000 words, my first draft still wasn't finished. I kept writing until it was, topping out at about 135,000 words. Yikes. Since then, it's gone through two major revisions, lost about 35,000 words, and I've had a critique partner read over it to give me suggestions before I start a third revision. I'll probably work on it again once I finish the first draft of my current Nano novel.

It's really nerve-racking and frustrating when you start editing because it takes longer than just writing a first draft, and you have to do it multiple times to get the story just right. But as you revise, the characters start to act like real people, the dialogue smooths out, the plot quickens and slows in all the right places -- then it's magic, almost more so than when you first draft the novel. Just wait -- you'll look back on your first draft and not even recognize it, because editing has made it so much better.

I think my Nano from two years ago is still two or three revisions away from being ready to query, but it's starting to feel like a book now, rather than just a story draft.

I'm a little nervous about editing only because it takes so long. I know my first draft will need a lot fixing and changing. Some parts of it already am not happy about and want to re write. But first I just want to get it wrote.

Re: Is anyone nervous about editing their novel after this month?

Totally nervous about it. But mostly because I am already changing so many things as I go along, so the original things are going to have to be cut and reworked into the story. I realized 15,000 words in that the story should have started 2 weeks later than it did and I was putting the focus on the career instead of on this other journey. So the entire first 30 pages are going to have to be cut/reworked/woven through the rest of the story. This is going to be a LOT longer than 50K too. So I'm also nervous about cutting things and adding other things. And the flow is all over the place right now since I am focusing too much on scenes instead of summary. I keep telling myself to just GO and I'll fix it in edits. Better to have to cut stuff than add it.

i would have to say i'm very nervous. my story is a bit of a mess, but i'm afraid of the heart of the story being removed, as i have some really good moments during the story itself. i have no idea how to approach the story when i'm finished and let it rest for a while, but it will all be for the better as i tighten everything up to make the story better, but at the same time, i'm afraid of my story becoming more generic as time passes.

I love editing! It's seriously so much fun for me to go through and fine tune, cull out, and develop things that are already there, as well as laugh at any spelling mistakes I've made.

I recommend this: http://hollylisle.com/one-pass-manuscript-revision-from-first-draft-to-last-in-one-cycle/

Seriously, so helpful. It's a great way to edit, especially if you're serious about getting published. It's how I went through my first NaNo novel, which I WANT to get published but haven't tried yet. It really makes editing more structured and it flows so well.

What scares me most is the fear of going back to edit and realizing that it's all a load of rubbish.
Otherwise I think it might be fun. There are a few things I already know I want to play around with, and some scenes that I think about moving around, but all in all, it's still making me uneasy.
Plus, I don't know how much time I'll have with deadlines and exams and the like.

This has been the weirdest writing experience. On one hand, I've stayed pretty motivated thus far. I haven't always stuck with my writing schedule, but when I sit down to write I'm able to get something down without staring at a blank page for too long.

On the other hand, I'm writing something so outside my comfort zone, it's made me uneasy. I'm afraid of going back and realizing that everything sucks ;_;

Your experience sounds a lot like mine. Most of my subject matter is totally foreign to me, which means I'm going to have to spend a lot of time researching and then finding experts to vet my material for plausibility. Not sure if it'll be possible, but I'll try.

But! This is the furthest I've ever made it with NaNo (year 6 for me here), and I'm motivated more and more as the days go by. I was worried about editing, earlier this month. Now, I'm starting to look forward to it. After I finish the story, that is (which'll hopefully be by January, LOL)!

I have edited a little along the way and I have also a document with notes about what I want to edit when the draft is finished. I'm very nervous! Will I be able to do it? Will I still think my novel has potential? And will I be brave enough to let other people read it? Oh, I don't know how this will end.

I'm terrified of looking back when all of this is over, I know there are so many things that need changing, pages that should burn and only a small piece of it all worth keeping like it is - but I'm really looking forwards to it as well. I've mostly written short-stories before this (though I've got a couple of plots on my hands that I'm working on, mostly one that I'm thinking of taking up for February's Script Frenzy to turn into a manuscript and go from there to graphic novel...) but it's always just as scary to look back.
Luckily I have an honest best friend who'll help me tell what's shit from what's worth keeping, she'll be worth the world when I'm editing those 50 000+...

I am afraid that I will re-read it and find that there is so much crap that I don't even know where to start with editing it. It seems like it will be such a huge job.

I guess that when I get there I should just approach the editing like I did Nano and try to edit a minimum of 1,667 word chunks every day. That should help me get down to business. I'm going to let the novel lie dormant for a few months before I tackle it though, which will probably just make my dread of editing it even worse.

I'm so nervous about editing! But I think I'm gonna post it on fictionpress and nicely ask a beta to help me with it (that's the current plan, anyway). That'll also help motivate me to keep writing, even after I finish the 50,000 words (Lord, help me get to 50,000 in eleven days...), because I don't know if the story will be finished by then. I realize it's not gonna get to perfection there, but it'll help me figure out what I need to work on, as well as encourage me by letting me know which parts aren't steaming piles of crap.

Yes. I'm terrified of editing. I like writing and I like my story so far (tho I'm starting to worry that I'm the only one who will) but so far the only person who has read any of it is my little sister who is cheerleading for me but doesn't really like fantasy or romance novels (which is what I am writing). My boyfriend straightup said that he wouldn't buy my novel if he just read the synopsis. So yeah... feeling a little worried about the editing stage.

I'm also behind and probably won't win >.< so that's depressing too.

I'm actually excited to edit my novel! As I was writing I got so many ideas on how to make it more interesting - about half-way through I decided the plot / the setting was sort of blah, but I continued anyway, thinking that once I edit, I'll go back and change it. Right now I'm toying with the idea to make my psychological fiction which right now only has a dash of magical realism into something waaay "out there". I can't wait until I'm caught up with all the things I've been neglecting to do NaNo, so I can start editing.

I'm starting to feel like mine would make a great short story but isn't fit to be a novel... I have a lot of catching up to do (Thank goodness for Dragon Naturally Speaking) but I figure if I hit 30k tomorrow and feel its over, I won't push it...but will start another piece instead.

I love you! It is always such a relief to hear of someone else who can't stand that series!

Re: Is anyone nervous about editing their novel after this month?

I'm not nervous about it, I'm excited!

But I think that has more to do with the fact that I have no idea what I'm doing. I like to call my style "organic" which probably just means its really very haphazard and when I go back and re-read it, and try editing it, I'm going to have no idea what I was thinking for the last month.

I am looking forward to poking at it a bit. Since I'm a writing newbie, having written nothing before, I really don't have expectations. I know I have some dull parts, and characters that need fleshing out. I have scenes and dialogue that came after 35,000 words that don't match the characters from 10,000 words, and I'm going to have to fix that. But ultimately, I'm looking forward to taking my time, not frantically typing as fast as possible, and seeing how I can turn what I feel is a really good idea into a really great story. Now, back to furiously typing, gotta get this sucker done!

I'm half and half -- a bit excited, a bit dreading it.

I'm excited because I think it's a good story idea with a LOT of promise.

I'm dreading it because I'm afraid I'll find out I had this awesome idea -- and then did it absolutely NO justice at all with my writing.

Re: Is anyone nervous about editing their novel after this month?

I edited my first chapter a few weeks ago (My friend wanted to read it, and because we typically read the same stuff, I thought it would be a neat idea, albeit terrifying as well) and I was glad to see that I think I actually added more to it than I took away. I have two or three editors lined up (one's the creative one that will tell me I said something wayyyyy too many times), another is a Philosophy PhD student and another graduated with a degree in editing for journalism, or something. I'm more nervous about having my creative editor take a red marker to it and cut out anything repetitive because that's when we'll see how many words 50k actually ends up being.

Honestly, yes. Of all the books I've written so far, I've been OK on he edit, because I knew the story well, and was able to fill the holes easily. On this one, I've been struggling with the plotline (word count is a nonissue, but I was honestly dragging my feet through the entire thing plot- and pace-wise), and when its time comes up for editing.... My editor will shred me on this one.
