So, I'm an aspiring novelist, like many of us. And I've realized that our generation has one marked disadvantage to our legacy...we are cursed with electronic mail. Sure, it's convenient as hell, but it is a mess as far as organization is concerned...and say you become famous and then die, and they decide to put together a book of your correspondence (a la Thomas Jefferson, Jane Austen, and Oscar Wilde)...are you really going to want future generations reading one sentence emails to your roommate saying, "I tossed that tupperware container of green sludge in the back of the fridge, hope you weren't saving it for something."
So, for almost the past year, I have picked up the habit of writing letters to friends and family. In the process, I've helped reduce my procrastination habit, I've improved my handwriting, and I've reconnected with three old friends! I've even had a few heart to heart discussions with my parents and my little brother, all via long-hand, posted letters. The hobby can be a little pricey, but I've treated myself to a nice fountain pen, ink, wax, seal, and pretty stationary. It relaxes me when I've had a hard day at work, and it gets my creative juices flowing before I sit down to write my fiction for the day.
What's even more, I'm getting a lot more letters in the mail, when a few months ago I was only getting stupid bills and resident mailers!
Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone here would be interested in becoming pen pals with me. I'd love to make new acquaintances, get to know more about the world through new friends, and just make someone's day by letting them talk about themselves for awhile (sure, you CAN do that on Facebook...but there is no guarantee that anyone is actually reading and processing!). I'm by no means a technophobe, but I do feel like as many strides as the internet has helped people make in socially connecting, I also feel as though there are sooooo many voices crying for attention, that many people get lost in the shuffle. It certainly does not help people who already feel ignored and lost. So I'd love to connect with people individually, not simply through the internet.
I know it would be far too presumptuous and dangerous to just jump into being mail pen pals, but with a few people, I started out just writing emails back and forth until we got to know each other a bit more, before graduating to exchanging addresses.
If anyone is interested, just send me a nano message!!
I feel like this has been posted somewhere before haha. But I'm game! I'd love to be a pen pal to someone! I have a few already as I've been pen-palling for several years now, but I'm always looking for more writing pen pals as most of my pen pals are just friends who I converse with about life and whatnot, but generally not about my writing and the specifics of language and presentation and all that jazz that comes with the writing world. =)
Pen Pals?
