Before I could even sink one day into the post nano depression of not having goals or even a new storyline I play with i got my new novel idea in the shower today.
It's unlike all the murder, thriller stuff I usually write but omg I can't get scenes and character flaws and twists out of ,y head.
Now the real challenge: write it in December or edit my November piece and write this one in January? Open to feedback!
I usually get a new idea 1 or 2 week into NaNo. Here's what I do: put the ideas, characters, events, etc. ANYTHING I can on the new novel idea, then when I'm done, I put it into a place with all my other ideas. I can continue/edit/revise my WIP, then start on the new idea that hit me a few weeks ago.
The real tricky thing is that if you choose your new idea, you might not finish the last one (this is, of course, irrevelant if you're finished with your story). And you might do that again. And again. And again. And- you get the point. On the other hand, if you don't write it down, you may forget. That's why I implemented this method for me: write the ideas down in a couple of pages at max., then when I have time and finished the older one, I can start on this new one! :)
Hmmm... although, if you've finished your story in November, and can make time, then I don't think it's impossible to do both of them: edit one, while you write the new one. You may even enjoy working on more than 1 project at the same time!
I'd probably write the new one now and then edit the old one in January. But I'm one of those people who always puts a new piece of writing aside for a few weeks so I can see it more objectively. It makes it easier for me to edit it.
My problem is that I have the next idea in my head, but haven't finished the first draft of this year's NaNo yet! Personally, I always find it's good to do something else between writing and editing a novel, so I would write the new one, then edit your NaNo novel.
Discovered my new novel!

But it's really up to you, of course. :)
