I'm building a treehouse with a fully stocked bar and a "No Teetotallers" sign hammered to the door. What are you fine juke joint jezebels and jive turkeys drinkin'? For me, my preferred poison is Scotch, naked and warm, in the same manner that I prefer my women. Walker Black if I have to, Chivas or Walker Blue if I can afford it. Secondary choices would be a bourbon Old Fashioned, easy on the cherries, a sapphire and tonic, easy on the tonic, or a gin martini, (James Bond's vodka martys are disgusting) dirty, and dry as a lizard's back on an Arizona afternoon; just let the sun shine through the vermouth bottle and I'm ecstatic. Dogfish 60 is my beer of choice. How about you folks? Belly up to the bar. What are you drinkin'?

I'm afraid I get really silly when I drink. And I use the word "drink" loosely, meaning, one beer, sometimes even just a cooler...? This is sad, I know. I'd like to work on my tolerance. Any tips?

Ancient Age when I'm broke, too! When I was younger---straight from the bottle. Now, in a glass with ice because I'm classy like that. Because we are all writers, I feel comfortable telling this story without being called out as a mega-dork. My old comedy group wrote a sketch about Ancient Age Bourbon. Where a guy in an Uncle Sam suit drinks Ancient Age and travels through time, solving history's problems with bourbon. "Go back in time with Ancient Age and Drunkle Sam"

I love a good screwdriver, Grey Goose or Skyy. My tolerance for alcohol has dropped considerably since I've had kids, though. Now one glass gets me tipsy. Lately I've been drinking a glass of red wine about every other night.

Red wine, preferably a nice Shiraz or white wine , maybe a Sauvingon Blanc, Chilean is good, New Zealand is better. Very occasionally a really good old Armangac, none of this American ice business. What is it with you people and cold drinks - it's winter for goodness sake!

Hendrick's gin, martini, gibson or gimlet; Maker's 46 or lately, Russell's Reserve 10 yr; good Scotch bought by other people; Johnny Walker blue or black, usually same thing. With the bourbon I like an old-fashioned, perfect Manhattan, or a few cubes and a cherry. Scotch or Irish, neat or a cube or two. I keep vodka around but it's really just for if I ran out of Hendrick's, because it's a good 20-25 minute drive to get to any here. I make my own lime cordial for the gimlet, and use Noilly Prat vermouth for the martini or gibson, and the Manhattan. I've been into Fee Brother's bitters, but just learned of a place that stocks quite a few others, looking forward to trying some. I like how they brighten a drink, and I do like to experiment. I like Belgian and Belgian-style ale, not much of a fan of wine, but can appreciate the right one with a meal, never just to drink.

I usually write in the day, so I don't drink and write usually. But if it's later... a dark and stormy (Gosling's Black Seal rum, ginger ale and lime) or a Meyers rum and coke zero. Or a Stella or Harp's Lager. For after writing unwinding purposes, either Zaya rum with just one or two ice cubes, or a good *old* single malt scotch on a bed of crushed ice. Can't drink wine anymore - red gives me a migraine after one sip, and white gives me a good old fashioned regular headache and insomnia after half a glass. I don't like either THAT much!

Drink of choice: Tito's Vodka on ice with a slice of lime. Miller Lite if I'm attending or watching a sporting event. Silver Patron @ Choir Practice. Us teachers have Choir Practice once or twice a month. Choir Practice is necessary. Choir Practice ensures we make it from holiday to holiday without imploding. Choir Practice is goodtimes.

I wish I could properly join this guild. I can't: I don't drink if I'm working in the near future and I'm on medication which doesn't interact nicely with large amounts of alcohol. I do, however, enjoy a gin and tonic (Bombay, of course), an absinthe, or a glass or few of red wine every now and then though. (And I have no work tomorrow in the daytime, so I think I'll crack open a bottle of red tonight!)

They will do if I to but I like my Tequila at least 11 years of age. Sadly it took a toast to the passing of a good friend to discover the fineness of Scotch.

I'm about to enjoy some Weyerbacher Old Heathen, from a brewery about 10 miles from my former home, moved from in July. I was excited to see Weyerbacher available here, though I have to drive to the other corner of the metro area for it. I love the Merry Monks cork & cage, particularly. Anyway. My characters started flirting with each other much too soon, and it was really pissing me off (and not just from a sense of literary integrity if you can read between lines,) but at the same time, word count took off, so I figure, okay, this direction today. Ale can only help.

Mostly nothing -- tend to write in the morning with coffee or black tea, or late in the night with ginger tea. BUT some friends and I had an absinthe-fueled write in last week, and it was sinfully delicious.

I am so glad that someone else on this forum shares my affinity for the Old Fashioned. The art of the cocktail has been lost by syrupy mixers and sub-par alcohol. Once you taste an Old Fashioned, if prepared correctly, you'll never want to drink a Captain 'N Coke or a premix Margarita again. Makers (Or Rye if you can find it) + Sugar + Bitters+ Water+ Garnish+ Ice = Magic.

Anytime I drink dark liquor I always drink it straight. I'm not a big fan of mixers. Whenever I drink rum straight, unless it's Zaya, I always pretend I'm a pirate. I know, I know, it's silly for a 32 year old man to pretend he's a pirate, but to that I say ARRRRRRGGGHHH!

I tried drunken writing once.... It was... interesting... But normally, I like me some grey goose vodka, straight. Though since it's november, I've found that hot chocolate with some spiced rum and a cinnamon stick is amazing.

They don't give us an edit button because they are our fascist overloards and editing is not allowed until December. A traditional Whiskey Old Fashioned has no vermouth. That is not to say the vermouth variant you have been drinking has not been called an Old Fashioned in your neck of the woods. There are many different variations. I've even seen Rachel Maddow making what she calls an Old Fashioned with different measures of bitters and no cherry. Just like everything else in this world, there is no right or wrong way, it's all up to personal taste. Also, you look like a local friend of mine.

Every winter I experiment with a few bourbons. The Russell's Reserve 10 year mixes really, really well for an old-fashioned or Manhattan. I have Maker's 46 right now, my current standby, not sure what I'll try next.

Rye or bourbon plus sweet vermouth and bitters is a Manhattan. With dry vermouth and bitters it's a dry Manhattan, and with both vermouths and no bitters, it's a perfect Manhattan. I like good bitters but prefer the perfect.

Cue up "Through The Roof N Underground" That's a good start. Listening to "Start Wearing Purple" or "Immigrant Punk" as a Gogol primer is going to turn you off of them. They're like coffee or whiskey, it's an acquired taste, but once you have the hankering for them, nothing else will do.

I don't drink and write, though I'm curious what might happen if I did. I come from a long line of men drinking themselves into the grave one cheap beer at a time, so I limit myself to social beverages. That said, sapphire & ginger or sapphire & tonic when I feel like being fancy; house gin (ideally at least beefeater but, let's be honest, I'm not going to turn down a burnettes and tonic in favor of water) and one of the above when I don't. Belvedere is my straight liquor of choice and I mostly steer clear of anything that's not clear. A decent lager or stout is good when I'm not in the market for more than the gentlest of buzz, and I've been known to enjoy the odd dry cider from time to time (blackthorne is favorite, but strongbow is nice).

'Tis the season for Troegs Mad Elf and Founders Breakfast Stout. I'm also fond of Atwater Vanilla Java Porter, Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout, and Well's Banana Bread. I like super smooth, super heavy beers as well. I'm saving my big bottle of Sly Fox Ichor quad for the post-NaNo celebration.

I'm a fan of dark rums--Gosling's, Captain Morgan Tattoo, or Capt. Morgan 100-proof. I usually drink them straight-up in shots, though in my youth I preferred to mix. I also drink Stoli vodka and the occasional champagne cocktail.

Mmmmm, I'm generally a wine girl. Give me a good Gewurtzraminer or Riesling. Love my dessert wines too - Tardio, Aszu, Ice Wine. I've got a pretty strong sweet tooth, so if I'm going mixed at home it's likely to be an almond milk hot chocolate with Hazelnut Liqueur and/or some Bailey's and/or French Vanilla Kahlua. I'm determined to drink a Hot Toddy this winter. Maybe I should make it a NaNo reward!

I have been sadly sober most of this november. Mostly because I've been fighting first a virus and now a cold. Can't drink when I'm sick. Although when I'm not sick, I like wine, usually red. Beer, cold. And tequila, oh sweet agave. Can't drink brown liquors, they make me sick, which I learned when I tried to cultivate a taste for scotch back in my twenties. Actually, call me a granny, but I think I'll buy myself a bottle of sherry. I like a nice glass of dry sherry on the rocks.

It might not be all brown, it might be the particular brown you were trying. Highly distilled liquors are easier on you, but come at a premium. But I'm not saying you should go out and try more of them. ;-) I know a number of people who think they can't drink gin, and with that it's even worse, cheap gin with a sweet mixer is bad on the blood and guts. After all, that's just vodka distilled again with botanicals in it, but the warehouses that produce vodka and then turn it into 20 other products don't have an eye toward our best interests...

You guys are all more committed drinker-writers than I. I'm a beer man who likes a brown ale this time of year, but I've been sticking to coffee all month because it's better for my writing motivation. My wife treats herself to a glass of vino when her writing is up to schedule, and likes the same bourbon you folks do. As a Scot, I never drink corn liquor: a Laphraoig is what I favor when it's time to drink something serious. -Shem

I talk about drinking far more than I actually drink. Sadly, I have this sort of reactive blood sugar that assigns my limit. But I like to make one very good drink in an evening or enjoy one well-made drink in a good restaurant. I like trying different labels of gin, bourbon, Irish and Scotch, work carefully with bits of mixer and liqueurs, etc. (And that's new for me; I used to drink only the old man drinks, here's a blog post about starting to branch out.) But I don't tend to like drinks that other people find "Fun!" or whatever. Still, 3-4 ounces of hard stuff is my limit unless it's well spread out with proper food in between. With ale or stout, I can push the limit a bit higher, but still not into Hemingway Land or anything.

You might be right, Bibliosylph, but when i was trying to cultivate my taste, I was actually trying with some nice stuff. I was a waitress with free access to the bar, and I learned that even the finest scotch, whiskey and brandy would turn my stomach. I didn't even have to drink it, just the smell would do it. Many years later, I learned that tequila didn't bother my stomach at all. I wonder if my grandmother's taino Indian ancestry means that somehow the genetics of the region won out in what my stomach could handle.

Oh look, I'm home. I definitely drink and write fiction. Former Navy sailor here. It's not a stereotype. I see all of these lovely drinks listed - old fashioned's, martini's, etc. I love them, but I had to make them over and over again, timed, during culinary school. So nowadays I stick to stout, brandy neat, merlot, and the occasional toddy. My favorite stouts are Left Hand's Milk Stout, Old English Oil, and Goose Island's Bourbon Stout. I also love Scottish barleywines like Wee Heavy and Skullsplitter. Saw a mention of Dogfish - love the Sao Paulo. I also homebrew, but probably not this year. The winter temps in Colorado this year are all over the place. I like a good zinfandel too, and Seven Deadly Zins is my favorite, but that's a bit fancy for down and dirty writing shifts. I'm not too proud to buy a jug or a box of merlot if it'll keep me in supply when I don't feel like bottle browsing.

Box wine has improved a LOT over the last decade. No shame in some of the newer ones. I preach the Box Wine Is OK Gospel. I work in the booze industry, actually. Doing nerdy computer things.

Oh so this is where the bar is! Let's see, most nights it's a little Ketel One with a splash of grapefruit juice on the rocks, but I'm also working my way through a case of Layer Cake wines a friend gave me (cabs and malbecs). Not a big beer drinker but I do indulge in the occasional Chimay or Rochefort.

As one who is in the know, what are some good box wines to try? I've had some good ones, and some stinkers. And what sucks about that is, you have a whole box of stinker wine that you have to swallow before you can get a new one. I guess you could just throw it away, but that is against my ethics.

I just wanted to say that this post has inspired me to get a bottle of sherry to keep in my bedstand, where I sit with my laptop and get my writing done, where I can close my door against the noise and chaos of kids and husband and home and life. Just me, my laptop, and that bottle of sherry. This might not be a good thing.

Bourbon. I enjoy Knob Creek, Maker's, Jim Beam Black, or JTS Brown...I take them all the same way, no ice, and dangerously close to spilling. Or a good beer..and by good I mean cheap. I spend my quality budget on the bourbon.

Well, the alcohol part was regular 80 proof. Did you know there are companies out there that make "Light" hard liquor though? With intentionally lower ABV?

I did know that. They make them lower alcohol content so they can be served in places that have wine/beer liquor licenses, not full bar licenses. :) I may or may not have given some legal counsel to a wine bar before. >.>

All the grocery stores here sell half-proof liquor and liqueurs and you can buy them just everywhere. Been here since July, still freaks me out. I had occasion to be at a Walmart on Wednesday, saw this charming display: http://lockerz.com/s/158727352 with 40 proof vodka. That's the highest any of it can be. Frangelico is 48 proof but Target sells a 40 proof version. And yet, vanilla extract is generally 70 proof...
