Let's hear it for the pets...

They love us; they support us during our crazy whims like, oh, I don't know, writing 50,000 words in one month. They never ask for recognition and they rarely get it. So let's hear it, Wrimos. Let's hear it for the pets:

Neville,

Thank you for stretching all of your 105 pounds down at the base of my office rolling chair thereby ensuring I can't move without rolling over your ear or a paw, depending on what pose you've struck that day. Without you I would get up from the computer countless times a night for no better reason than my characters being biznitches who will not cooperate. Your utter and complete refusal to budge even a single inch away from the perilous rollers demonstrates a boundless loyalty and keen understanding for what your mom really needs regardless of what she wants. Not to mention, it’s just fun to look down, see you there, and know I’m not alone. Even better when you roll your eyes up to say, “Hey, mom, I see you seeing me, I love ya, I love ya, keep going so you finish and we can go for our walk!”

Thanks, baby boy. You’re the best.

E.N.:

I love you, but you have righteously godawful gas. The fact that you've taken to laying over my keyboard and letting 'em fly has been keeping me away from my computer in droves. You kinda suck, little fur man. But at night, in bed, I don't know who else I'd want to have laying on my butt.

Except, of course, when your daddy asks "Who the hell farted?" and doesn't believe it was you. Because it was.

I am so going to have you emasculated. And then I'm gonna ask the vet if they have a butt cork special.

Thor and Jones: sorry, dudes. I know how very much you both enjoy making biscuits on my bosom, but I can't lounge around for your personal pleasure just so you can get your kicks copping a feel on me. You have to wait until the writing's done for the day. THEN you can get your loving.

Frank: sorry to disturb your comfy cozy sleep place that is really my desk. I know you disapprove of my intrusion every time your big buttocks bump up against my screen, jiggling it ever so slightly.

Miko: sorry about the recent medication routine. Keep it together, old man, and I'll make sure you pop your pills.

Winky: my sweet little grouchy girl, just keep on rockin' with yo bad self.

Whit: I know you only mooch here, but I'm glad to see you whenever you do come around.

Thank you for always providing comic relief, for sitting on my desk with your tail over the keyboard to remind me when it's time for a break, for tapping me on the arm and biting me to remind me when it's time for a crunchies break, and for being there to give loves and kisses to, when my mind goes blank, and I can't figure out what my MC is going to do next.

My Dearest Furry Boys,

Gryphon: I know this month has been hard for you thus far, especially those times I have been sick. It must be terribly irritating when your usually reasonable Momma has ignored your good advice to take a healing nap, and instead stayed on the laptop you hate so very much. I apologize also for neglecting our traditional afternoon games of "fetch the mousie" which always bring us both so much joy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for accepting the treats I offer in compensation, and for deciding it to be a fair trade that at least I prefer to work in your favorite "sit with people" chair.

Phoenix: You enthusiastic little monster. I wish you caused a bit less chaos, but I couldn't be happier at the coincidence that you are currently playing at being a very Independent adolescent, and so aren't bothered by a drop in time spent together. And I know you're enjoying the extra treats. Please stop getting into trouble, though?

Butch... well, I've never been more glad you aren't mine. You are cute, though.

Tucker,

Thank you for putting your head in my lap when I write (it's not a small head either) or sitting right next to me on the couch with this look of "Pay attention to me! I'm pretty! I'm a goldie!" Thanks for trying to wreck my word count by pushing my hand to you instead of the keyboard. But so cute not to love.

(I have a 2.3 year old golden retriever. Dark red color, thinks he's adorable. He is. But when my grandma, who has little bit of the dementias, came over she would pet him for 4 hours at a time, then forget that she pet him, and then tell me how neglected he was, and pet him for another 4 hours, and do this all day for 16 hours a day.... He now has a bald spot on his nose permanently from her, and his this SUPER need for attention).

To my dear Smog and Beyonce,

Yes, sometimes you make me set my laptop aside and take my headphones off and clamber off the couch and lose my train of thought just so I can answer your desperate meows and find...you don't really want anything at all, just attention. Yes, sometimes you climb all over my lap and press buttons I really *don't* want to be pressing on my keyboard, and generally just get in the way of me writing more NaNo words. But ya know what? Sometimes mummy really does need a break, and some lurve, and that's when you two come in! You give me good hugs and headbutts and you purr up a storm and I like that. You are cute and silly and, at times, a little needy. And I love you two just the way you are!!!

Eris,

I know it's been a difficult year what with our transcontinental move and all. But does that really mean you have to systematically destroy my couch and carpet? And I realize that lately our relationship has been one of mutual annoyance. You get annoyed when I pick you up and jiggle your belly fat... I get annoyed when you stand inside the litterbox and still manage to poop OUTSIDE it...

I know I don't say it enough, but I do appreciate the things you do. I love that you kill the spiders, and that you sometimes feel fit to grace me with your presence. If you doubt my love, consider that you are currently eating better than I am.

Just one request, though. Quit living up to your namesake. After 8 years, I'm tired of all the destruction you've wreaked.

Ralph;
While I like your company, growling at me when I'm in bed writing isn't appreciated. Also, getting up and randomly barking at nothing is starting to piss me off, especially when I'm in the zone. I know you're neurotic and it's not exactly your fault, but you could be a little more supportive.

Ryan;
Thanks for your company. No, you can't sit on the laptop. Especially when Mummy is writing.

Cyril;
Yes, I realise you own everything, but that chair happens to be the most comfortable one to curl up in for writing-related purposes. Also, how come you only want the chair when I do, and the cat basket is fine otherwise?

Goblin;
You are my cute, screamy green buddy. You are endlessly entertaining, and I appreciate your sense of humour and ability to make me smile, especially since the depression's hitting pretty hard right now. I love you too. By the way, have you learned swear words, or do I just have a dirty mind? This morning's new phrases included something that sounded awfully like the F-bomb.

Quinn;
You hate it when I'm giving someone else attention, don't you? You don't like me writing, either. But you make cute faces at me and want me to interact with you... while I'm writing.By the way, I don't love Goblin more than I love you.

Quinn AND Goblin;
When Mummy goes through to bed, it means Mummy needs sleep or peace and quiet. It also means that Mummy has fed you and changed your water and moved your toys around. Please stop the screaming, guys: I'm scared the neighbours are going to get pissy.

love this.

Dear Belle,

I adopted you to be my running buddy, but you have become the holder of all the secrets of my novels. You listen intently as I bounce ideas off of you, and though you do not participate, having you there, cocking your head if I say something that rhymes with "cookie" "walk" or "chewy", is all that matters. You have helped me in so many ways to keep the ultimate and grand reveals and twists in my novels secret from everyone, thus alleviating my desire to tell SOMEONE about it.

I have loved you since I saw you behind the glass at Dumb Friends League when you were nine months old, and will love you forever and ever. Even when you lag at the far end of the leash when we run. Or pounce on me in the morning when I stay in bed too long. Or jump around sideways and backwards like you're in a mosh pit when I go anywhere near your leash. And any other time you annoy me. I love you for all your quirks and I am eternally grateful for the unconditional love you bestow upon me.

Dear Ms. Whiskerface, aka kitty-kitty, aka Cali-
Yes, your belly fur is softer than cashmere, and adhered to most of my clothing, and yes, you did inspire a picture book that I hope will be acquired by my publisher, but please, my sweet little calico, let me write in peace. You are the most talkative animal I have ever been owned by, and that includes a long list of other felines, a few canines, and some other assorted mammals, birds, and amphibians. (the turtle was awful quiet, that is why we never found him when he ran away when we were kids, and six months later we found him dry as turtle jerky in the front coat closet.)

You, my dear puss-face, drive me crazy when you want attention and I promise, as long as I meet my writing goal for the day, I will come and massage you, open the door fifty times, even though you have a kitty door in the basement, and give you raw beef treats in addition to your crunchies and soft food. You are spoiled rotten. But I love you no matter. There is a cat in my WIP, although it is a dead cat and you did not inspire it. Someday I will make you immortal, but until then, please let me finish my novel. Purrs to you.

Re: Let's hear it for the pets...

We were kids, my brother and I. It was a little green turtle that lived in a plastic terrarium with easily climbable walls. This turtle had a major adventure, leaving the terrarium, my brother's room, heading down the hallway and then somehow getting itself down an entire flight of stairs, before making its way into the front door coat closet. It's amazing that none of us, including the cats discovered it... yet... maybe it was the cats. Now I'm thinking that Mittens was the turtle-napper. Maybe he left it there after realizing it wasn't worth eating.

I love turtles. There are three of them etched into a ring I wear on my left thumb.

Ok, kids...line up and assume the positions:
Patches...thanks for being my running mate, sleeping in my recliner while I write, being a worthwhile if a little unwilling hunting dog, listening to me rant and rave in the woods about crooked barrels and genetically altered grouse. You're the best Australian shepherd that's ever lived.
Finnegan...thanks for being a great guard dog and protecting mom and the kiddos while I work and all of that. You're the best doberman that's ever lived.
Shawnee-biscuit...thank's for just being you. Thanks for letting us adopt you in your prime of life and give you a comfy home and paying us back with immediate unconditional love...you're the best MINIATURE Australian shepherd that's ever lived.
Punkin, Pinkie, Patton, and Kitty...you're cats...just be thankful that you are still alive. I don't even like cats (ok ok you are pretty damn good cats)
Liam and Custer...you're goats....thanks for putting on a show and headbutting each other while I sit in the backyard by the fire...and thanks for watching over all the hens. You're the best Nigerian Pygmy goats that have ever lived.

Thank you for spending hours snoogled up next to me while I write, and for sometimes demanding attention by shoving your head under my hand for some pets, to remind me that there's more to life than writing.

Mostly, thank you for being here; at seventeen, that's not something I take for granted.

Sweetest Winter, alpha dog and pack leader when the humans aren't around; thank you for your pitiful soulful gaze reminders to take walks for the pack.

Wonderful Iseabeau, you are a beautiful belly-girl and clearly in a perfect world I would be petting you and giving you treates all day long.

Shadow, I have no idea what you ate, but wow. It's a gas weapon, puppy love. Maybe it is time for a walk after all.

Augustus, it's wonderful and brave of you to prove that kitties can use a doggie door, but no, you are not going outside.

Azura kitten-girl, it was probably Augustus that put those dog-door ideas in your head, and no, my husband's head is not a food item, and no, you should NOT climb into the fridge. Settle down.

Anubis, do not follow your sister into the fridge.

Okay guys, time to take a break from writing ... where did I put the lase pointer?

Huey Aloysious Raisins,

You are my homepiece, and you've had my back through divorce, illness, unemployment, and now you've valiantly sacrificed your most beloved time of day, "Love and scritch time during Big Bang Theory reruns", in order to allow me this chance to reach 50K in 30 days.

Well, little buddy, I've reached 50K, and that means all the love time, and scritch time, and Cosmic Catnip/Tripping the light fandango time you can HANDLE senor gato!

I've got your back too, and that means somebody's getting a new Motor Mouse for Christmas! Damn skippy!

Scud

Mum's been a bit neglectful of you this month, but at least I took time out to take you to Agility every Sunday... and when the postie comes, you're always at my feet telling me we've got to walk out to the front gate so you can bring the mail in. Sometimes we get parcels deliverd and they're bigger than you, but like they say, it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog... and no matter the size of the parcel, you'll try to bring it inside for me.

I'm not so grateful about having to get up every time you feel a desperate need to bark at Harlow, the chocolate lab next door, especially when he totally ignores you.

However, for a Jack Russell Terrorist who is nearly impossible to live with, you're still there, wherever I go. Even when I use the bathroom; take a shower or try to go to bed - no, you're not supposed to sleep on the bed with me, matter how often you try. It's been hard work over the last two years to make you the Jack Russell that you are - one that doesn't dig holes out of boredom; who likes the cats even though they ambush you; who has learned to dump the cardboard roll from the toilet paper into the recycling crate; and who sometimes doesn't play too rough with the aging Cavalier KCS and you don't try to escape through the gate when I open it after I've told you to sit.

All these things have meant an easier time for me during November while I've been writing. The last thing I needed was a dog who tears up the recyling, digs holes that constantly need filling or tries to make a mad dash through the gate every time I need to go in or out.

I'm a big dog lover, but for a little dog, Scud, you're pretty damn awesome!

Thank you for insisting you absolutely NEED to be on my lap whenever I try to write, swiping at my fingers (claws unsheathed obviously) while I type, nudging a little wet pink nose under my hand when you need a head scritch, and demanding belly rubs at the most intense moments of my novel. But at least you can be relied upon to drag me back to the real world and take care of me and you. Here's to you, you big fat purring lump of fur! You're adorable.
