Just for fun: Check out I Write Like

I'm sure someplace on here someone has posted this already, so sorry if I'm being redundant.

There's a fun little website I was introduced to a few weeks ago called I Write Like: http://iwl.me/

You plug in a sample of your work and this statistical analysis tool analyzes your word choice and writing style and compares it with those of the famous writers. It was created by Russian software programmer Dmitry Chestnykh.

The hysterical thing is that famous writers (who are actually IN the system) have plugged their work into it, only to find out they write like someone else. lol.

I did it four times using different sections of my NaNo novel. They all said I write like Chuck Palahniuk. Which I find hysterical because he's the last person I would have guessed.

(out of curiosity, I plugged in several sections of my middle grade fantasy novel and it said that one was written like Neil Gaiman)

Harmless fun when you're taking a break.

I wonder what metrics it keys on. Word/sentence/paragraph length? Quote frequency? Number of unique words?

I tried it with a couple of paragraphs of mine from the start of a chapter. "I write like Arthur Clarke", it tells me. I'm rather impressed by that! :D

I then tried a couple of paragraphs from the end of the same chapter. Now "I write like Margaret Atwood".

Hmm, tried three decent sized sections (500+ words) that I have written in the last two days. It came back with:

Cory Doctorow
Gertrude Stein
Dan Brown

So, evidently my writing is all over the place, and I still need to find my voice.

I got Gertrude Stein. I did this once before and got David Foster Wallace. Nothing I'm writing currently reflects my general style, though.

I'd just be happy if I could write like Keillor or Wodehouse.

This year my characters all talk too much and are being kind of stupid.

I got four different results. All of them are awesome. Since I'm writing from five different POVs, apparently I'm shifting voice appropriately?

1. James Joyce
2. Jane Austen (wtf?)
3. The Bard
4. Stephen King (on a non-nano, parody-like selection)

This amuses me.

So far, I've tried putting in different paragraphs from different manuscripts. I've gotten Margaret Atwood (three times), Margaret Mitchell and Anne Rice.

Oddly enough, my NaNoWriMo novel keeps getting Margaret Atwood, while a different one got the other two.

I admit it, I'm easily amused.

At least I've heard of all of them, even if Palahniuk is the only author in that bunch that I've actually read.

Although, how do you know "I hate my tweeker neighbors" isn't reminiscent of Shakespearean cadence?

I tried my story again with the same bits and it still came out Chuck Palahniuk. Except for the 1st chapter, which I added this time around. Apparently that one reads like James Joyce.

I copied some Cory Doctorow text into the analyzer and - interestingly enough - he writes like H.P. Lovecraft.

Re: Just for fun: Check out I Write Like

Wow, that thing is seriously screwy! I just played around with it a lot, and some of the responses made sense, while others are totally out there.

The ones that made sense were that a fanfic I had on-hand (most of my writing is not on this computer) that I had written to be a history book for children came up L. Frank Baum. The sex scene out of a very, very, very different fanfic came up Anne Rice, so that made sense, although neither of them were vampires. :P A third fanfic's scene of a confession of love came up Stephanie Meyer--how insulting!--but I'm presuming it keyworded onto something like blush or giggle or love or whatnot.

The craziness was stuff like when I put in parts of the Methods Research Design out of the archaeology thesis I wrote a few years ago, and got H.P. Lovecraft, and then the next two paragraphs of the same paper got Margaret Atwood. The first excerpt of my NaNo novel also came up H.P. Lovecraft (I didn't think he spent much time talking about the Olympian gods...) and the second part, with its teenage boy fantasizing about slaughtering teenage girls...came up Rudyard Kipling.

The fanfic with the sex scene that came up Anne Rice? An earlier part got the result J.D. Salinger. The one with the part that came up as Stephanie Meyer also had parts come up as Dan Brown, Gertrude Stein, and William Gibson. (Most of that one is entirely in one POV. The part that came up William Gibson is the only part that's in a different POV.)

And, just for kicks, I tried putting in something in screenplay format. The first part of it came up Isaac Asimov, and the second part came up Arthur Clarke.

That thing is hilarious to play around with, but I hope there aren't people who think it's accurate.

Re: Just for fun: Check out I Write Like

Five different sections of my NaNo came up as Arthur C. Clarke, one as Douglas Adams, and one as H. P. Lovecraft. By no stretch of the imagination are the latter two correct. (Clarke's pushing it, too, but at least it's believable.)

An improvement over the last time I tried this, where three samples (from three separate works) produced three different authors, none of whom I'd ever read.

My 1680's part is like James Joyce. (who I despised reading as a youth!) Got Rudyard Kipling with a second, which is probably because there were some animals involved. But I LOVED Kipling as a youth... so I guess that evens out.

My present day is Arthur Clark, who I've never heard of... Ohhhh, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Would never have guessed that. I did it with another of the present day passages much later in the book and got Arthur Clark again. So at least that means I was consistent, I guess!

Re: Just for fun: Check out I Write Like

Past attempts have generated David Foster Wallace, prompting me to research his tragic life and to consider reading his works. This year's NaNo excerpt generated Cory Doctorow, of whom I have no knowledge. (Google calls.)

I've taken tests where they analyze your gender based on your writing style. Apparently I'm male, though the mirror denies this. Musically, I have the tastes of a teenage boy. Hrmph. (You go on one 1980s headbanging nostalgia binge on iLike, and it's on your permanent record...)

If I'd gotten Stephenie Meyer, I might have done something unthinkable. Though it's important to note, she does know her audience. She isn't exactly writing stunning literary fiction, but she does get the average non-reading teenage girl interested in reading SOMETHING besides Glamour magazine by writing in a style simplistic enough to be easily understood by people who prefer monosyllabic conversations. So I give her props for that.

Re: Just for fun: Check out I Write Like

I've put in about 15 different sections now. More than 1/3 have come back as Anne Rice. I've had 3 Edgar Allan Poe, and 3 or 4 James Joyce. It seems like passages written in the same part of the story come back with the same author. So I guess depending on what or when I'm writing, it changes? Though I have Anne Rice popping up throughout, so I guess that's the most accurate one.
