TOTALLY - and also with the characters - it was an accidental kiss - they literally fell (tripped) into each other and ending up kissing, so it wasn't intentional - but then later on in the book it was :) and then I had one character kiss my villain (and then implied they had sex) - THAT was the one i had planned to happen! It's hard to "show, don't tell" emotions to a degree--if you write what the character is feeling, then you're just telling, and if you write any of their physical "tells" you start to feel repetitive or embarassing. (I have so many averted eyes, tightened lips, rapid heartbeats, flushing faces, etc. in my novel...) Anywho, I usually have a wordcount-padding gratuitous sex scene in my NaNos, so I sat down to try to write one last night and just couldn't do it. Turns out my MMC isn't enough of a jerk to deflower a 15-year-old after all. They did share a sweet kiss and finally had it out about their feelings. I was laughing because if I had gone through with the sex, it would've pushed me over the 50k mark. What a thing to win on! "They did"... a little while later, but offscreen, as I can't write erotica that doesn't read ridiculous to save my life (and believe me, I regret it). The only problem is, it was only supposed to be physical. They should have parted then and left it at that. But I put so much into their overcoming social status differences, in terms of attraction and shared interests, that I think they're falling in love now. Marriage is out of the question, though. It's a first-person narrative story, so I don't feel like there are really 'main characters' aside from the narrator... The woman with the most screen time, anyway, just kissed my narrator. Except that he's been seeing someone for a year after crushing on her off and on for the 15 years prior. This is problematic as I'm already at 120k words and was hoping to wrap it up by 130-140. Luckily narrator's girlfriend is currently unconscious and kidnapped, so maybe I can squeak by with letting the surprise kiss go unresolved in any direction until the next book. At least it will give my potential future readers something to wonder about between volumes. I'm not really sure what to do with. I was expecting them to just have a sort of half-realized, unspoken sexual tension while they worked together in the future, maybe coming to a head somewhere down the line; only it turns out that she's a take-charge kind of girl and wasn't having any of that. My best scenes come from them leading the way. If they want to do something, I run with it. If they don't want to do something that I want them to do, they're like a couple of spoilt kids stomping their feet. They're right 95% of the time, but they do let me have the last 5% so that I can shape some kind of story around their scenes. I have to have the final word sometimes. Don't we all have those little literary skeletons in our closets? Those 'love scenes' written before we even knew what we were doing? That same friend and I used to pick some guy we had a crush on, and we'd start 'erotic' (<--note the sarcastic quotation marks) stories about said crush, then take turns adding stuff to them. I still have a few of them, and they really are horribly wonderful. Full of beds that get moved across the room due to passionate activities, cringeworthy descriptions of facial expressions, and lots of fun dialogue like "Wow that feels great, you're the best baby!". Also, I look back at some of them and actually can't believe how much stuff I DID know about when I was fifteen. I look at the teenage girls in my family now and I really have gotten that selective memory. I think they know WAY more than I ever did at their age, and it freaks me out. Then I come across certain stories or old home videos of my girlfriends and I talking, and I'm like "Whoa! Holy crap! HOW DID I KNOW THAT?!?!?!?".
