Let's start a thread for us living in the "old continent".

I'm from southern Finland, a long time speculative fiction writer (never published anything, though)

Hi Everyone, pleased to (virtually) meet you all!

I'm English, living in Barcelona, and this will be my fourth Nano. This year I'm going without any plan/plot at all - just blind improvisation every day! I feel like I'm at the start of a roller coaster, hauled up to the top and all ready to start whizzing down. Wheeee! Here we go, here we go, here we go!

oh, this must include me. English - West Midlands.I did post a suggestion for a Euro over 50s in the feedback thing - but it disappeared. Short time writer. 1st NaNo. Managed to finish writing a complete book a few months back but no joy with agents. I have paid for some feedback, but I think I know what it is going to say. (Don't give up the day job -but it's tool ate for that)

Staffordshire, UK here. This is my first NaNo - I figure better late than never! :)

Hi.

I'm in Northamptonshire, UK. This is my third NaNo and I'm writing another in what I hope will be a series of humorous whodunnits, featuring the self-opinionated Verity Long. I won last year with the first of Verity's outings, 'Stricly Murder'. This year's is entitled 'Organised Murder' and I'm thinking of 'Scouting for Murder' for 2012!

I'm also writing a series for older children/young teens called 'Chamaeleon' which I aim to e-publish, originally for Kindle. If all goes to plan 'Chamaeleon: The Secret Spy' should be published by the end of this month.
And then I can really call myself a writer!

Good luck to you all.

Lynda

Could I join too? Oh Please, oh please? I was born in a refugee camp in Germany and have lived in Sweden, England, and Wales. I hope you won't reject me for living in Iowa now, or for childhood summers in Canada? I've also studied in Finland and Belgium. Well, and New Zealand, too, where many people were "British" than those who actually live in the UK......

Maybe I can get extra points for being a 5 time winer and for having been published?

Timkford

Ruta - you sound like you belong everywhere.

While this really belongs on a finance forum - did you see the news item showing German parliament conscientiously discussing how to save the Euro finance issue and the Italian parliament where 2 mp's are fighting over a woman. Reality is funnier than fiction sometimes.

Come on in, Ruta. Of course you're welcome - a woman of your experience! Er... Nano experience, that is :>)

Kataja

Everybody feeling European is welcome!

Originally someone was complaining about that the US people are all in a wrong timezone - most active when we are already sleeping... (and sleeping when we start to be active)

RutaBaker
75362 words so far Winner!

Time? The US now has summer time (or daylight savings time as it's euphemistically called) from early March until November!
I agree with the attitude of the native peoples: it's only the government that would cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it on the bottom of the blanket, and think that it was a longer blanket.

bernie_noble

Ah... But if you live on the far western edge of a time zone you get later twilights. Where I live solar noon is 2pm in summertime and in June the sky is light until almost 10pm. (Roughly same latitude as NYC and Madrid). Lovely.

I'm not feeling European--I'm American.

Just wanted to say hi and happy writing!

Kataja

At this time on this latitude (northern 60) the "summertime" that we still have means that it is almost dark still at 8 o'clock in the morning - meaning most people have to leave for school or job before sunrise... It makes no sense (especially as it is just the morning darkness that causes winter depression in some people...)

I spent my childhood in Lapland, somewhat North of the polar circle. In the middle of the winter there was daylight for about two hours - a long combined sunrise and sunset in the South. In the summer the sun did not go down for a month.

RutaBaker

When I moved to Sweden it wasn't the cold winter or learning a new language and customs that proved the greatest challenge. It was the darkness of the winter days. I loved the summer's long light, but dusk came so early in the afternoon in winter that I was ready for bed by 6pm when it had already been dark for 3 hours or more. But I had great biceps from all the snow shovelling.

cecilia_peartree

Hi,
I live in Scotland where the winters are dark, wet and cold and the summers are light, but still wet and cold.

Oddly enough, I was just reading about half an hour ago that the perennial controversy over whether to abandon Greenwich Mean Time (the only real time!) has started up again - some people think it would be better to use Central European Time instead. That would mean for us that it wouldn't get light until at least 9 am in winter. I hate the longer hours of darkness in winter and would ideally like to work longer hours overall in summer and shorter in winter.

This will be my 6th NaNoWriMo. This year I have self-published 4 of my previous efforts (heavily edited!) on Kindle, and it has certainly improved my writing motivation, although I can't really say it has affected my bank balance yet!

I live on the European shore of the Bosporus, so technically I am in Europe. :)
I grew up in the US but came to Istanbul 25 years ago and consider it my permanent home.

Hi, I am Dutch.... Did won last year. But still editing hehehe. This year is the 2nd time and
with one day to go, I am still wondering who is going to be the lead character this time and
in what adventures he will drag me...

Thanks, Kataja, for starting this group. It does seem that there are more than four of us, as I think Timkford counted when the idea was first mentioned. Yipee! I don't want to be lumped with the Americans (Oops, did I really say that out loud?).

I am a Newbie and 54-year-old Californian living deep in the forest of central Sweden. I am not a summer person and all that light (plus the mosquitoes) really gets me down. I love the dark, cold, cozy winters, perfect for writing. I can't wait for snow. I was so hoping it's coming would coincide with the start of NaNo. There's still time, but I don't think it is cold enough today, sigh!

Hej, I just realized...We European Geezers get to start early (if we can stay up late enough).

Hey this is me, but you gotta let me have some time travel to make it so. My ancestors fled Switzerland around 1802-on the wrong side of some political mix up and went to the Pennsylvania area, then all over the place. My last name is....well, it starts with a B.

Otherwise I am

Phoebe,
Portland almost counts as European - it's one of the most European-feeling American cities I've ever lived in (for 6 years!)
Now in Devon, though the heart still calls the Highlands of Scotland home.

mmmmm I could start in just about an hour - but if I do then I know I'll be up till 2 or 3 - and I am playing golf in the morning.
Writing / Golf Golf / Writing ,,,, Golf wins (am i allowed to post that on here?)

Sure, I won't tell anyone.,,hahahahahaha,

I tried going to bed at 10PM, couldn't stay awake and thought I would do better in the morning with a good night's sleep.

Here it is almost 2 AM and of course I have been tossing about since 11:30. So forget sleep; I'm certainly not playing golf tomorrow morning.

Timkford

Blimey, nearly 95,000 users. Surely, all the americans are asleep or at work (I lost the time dimension when i retired) - so that means there must be a lot more Euros and others than the few listed here

Hey I thought you were going golfing. Curiosity over came you, huh?

Erica in the novel

Americans are asleep, shhhhhh

Timkford

Had quick look over breakfast - just back from golf, suppose i had better rework that opening sentence - i'm sure i can do better than that.

Kataja

I envy all of you who have time to write!

I knew that I'd have hard day at job today (and yesterday was too), so no idea of starting at midnight, and now I'm sitting at job and cursing a code I'm trying to work on - writing it on a very badly documented system that has no debugging facilities - and I'm no coder, I'm a linguist. But we have too few people here...

Even though I was still sleeping whilst you lot were posting here, I also have a rather busy day ahead and need to go out of town for part of it. I might not start until tomorrow because 2-11-2011 works out to better feng shui.

I learned a few years ago that I work better in bursts, word explosions, so to speak. Most of my wins were clocked in 23 days, not 30. And last year's win came in at over 70,000 words.

Everyone's word mountain growing? I got to 5970 today.

WOW! It's hard for me to tell as I am handwriting, but I am pretty sure I'm keeping up or beyond the minimum. Baby steps, baby steps...within reason, 1667

How long do you wait before typing it up? Do you transcribe it in bits and pieces or wait until you have a certain number of pages/body of work?

I wait for time on the computer that is best for files. This one is used for fun Internet stuff, and the desktop is for work, usually used by those who have real jobs.
