Short time writer. 1st NaNo. Managed to finish writing a complete book a few months back but no joy with agents. I have paid for some feedback, but I think I know what it is going to say.
Hi.

I'm in Northamptonshire, UK. This is my third NaNo and I'm writing another in what I hope will be a series of humorous whodunnits, featuring the self-opinionated Verity Long. I won last year with the first of Verity's outings, 'Stricly Murder'. This year's is entitled 'Organised Murder' and I'm thinking of 'Scouting for Murder' for 2012!

I'm also writing a series for older children/young teens called 'Chamaeleon' which I aim to e-publish, originally for Kindle. If all goes to plan 'Chamaeleon: The Secret Spy' should be published by the end of this month.
And then I can really call myself a writer!

Good luck to you all.

I hope you won't reject me for living in Iowa now, or for childhood summers in Canada? I've also studied in Finland and Belgium. Well, and New Zealand, too, where many people were "British" than those who actually live in the UK......

While this really belongs on a finance forum - did you see the news item showing German parliament conscientiously discussing how to save the Euro finance issue and the Italian parliament where 2 mp's are fighting over a woman. Reality is funnier than fiction sometimes.

I agree with the attitude of the native peoples: it's only the government that would cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it on the bottom of the blanket, and think that it was a longer blanket.

Ah... But if you live on the far western edge of a time zone you get later twilights. Where I live solar noon is 2pm in summertime and in June the sky is light until almost 10pm. (Roughly same latitude as NYC and Madrid). Lovely.

Re: European Geezers' Clubhouse lounge

At this time on this latitude (northern 60) the "summertime" that we still have means that it is almost dark still at 8 o'clock in the morning - meaning most people have to leave for school or job before sunrise... It makes no sense (especially as it is just the morning darkness that causes winter depression in some people...)

I spent my childhood in Lapland, somewhat North of the polar circle. In the middle of the winter there was daylight for about two hours - a long combined sunrise and sunset in the South. In the summer the sun did not go down for a month.

Hi,
I live in Scotland where the winters are dark, wet and cold and the summers are light, but still wet and cold.

Oddly enough, I was just reading about half an hour ago that the perennial controversy over whether to abandon Greenwich Mean Time (the only real time!) has started up again - some people think it would be better to use Central European Time instead. That would mean for us that it wouldn't get light until at least 9 am in winter. I hate the longer hours of darkness in winter and would ideally like to work longer hours overall in summer and shorter in winter.

This will be my 6th NaNoWriMo. This year I have self-published 4 of my previous efforts (heavily edited!) on Kindle, and it has certainly improved my writing motivation, although I can't really say it has affected my bank balance yet!

When I moved to Sweden it wasn't the cold winter or learning a new language and customs that proved the greatest challenge. It was the darkness of the winter days. I loved the summer's long light, but dusk came so early in the afternoon in winter that I was ready for bed by 6pm when it had already been dark for 3 hours or more. But I had great biceps from all the snow shovelling.

Thanks, Kataja, for starting this group. It does seem that there are more than four of us, as I think Timkford counted when the idea was first mentioned. Yipee! I don't want to be lumped with the Americans (Oops, did I really say that out loud?).

I am a Newbie and 54-year-old Californian living deep in the forest of central Sweden. I am not a summer person and all that light (plus the mosquitoes) really gets me down. I love the dark, cold, cozy winters, perfect for writing. I can't wait for snow. I was so hoping it's coming would coincide with the start of NaNo. There's still time, but I don't think it is cold enough today, sigh!

Even though I was still sleeping whilst you lot were posting here, I also have a rather busy day ahead and need to go out of town for part of it. I might not start until tomorrow because 2-11-2011 works out to better feng shui.

I learned a few years ago that I work better in bursts, word explosions, so to speak. Most of my wins were clocked in 23 days, not 30. And last year's win came in at over 70,000 words.

Phoebe,
Portland almost counts as European - it's one of the most European-feeling American cities I've ever lived in (for 6 years!)
Now in Devon, though the heart still calls the Highlands of Scotland home.

I'm feeling european and american, oh no, imagine! eeeek! i have dutch and polish and native american, born on an indian reservation and the whole works. ah, let's see, and i lived a long time in the southwest and really found it a special place, now i live in paris and have lived here for five or so years; although it's weird everyone always thinks im english, maybe because in my suburb it would be unusual for an american to live here? as it is easier for english to live in france and more common; because of the visa rules its a realllllllllll pain in the arse-oh-rama to immigrate for an american or anybody outside the EU. anyhoo, to me i look like a giant american dutch-polish person with slanty eyes and high cheek bones who walks around looking like an english country woman with a corgi and my french husband and french feeling son; does that count?

phew, that is way to international for me, hi ya-all, your funny and neat, i loved someone who made some comment about merkle etc that was hysterical;

i guess out of all that i feel most like a dutchie believe it or not strangely enough

Hello! Have been commuting between various forums and keep forgetting to look in here.
Just got to 27,000 words. I'm writing about twice as fast as usual for some reason.Perhaps either before I forget what I'm going to say or the story runs out!
We've had some very dark and dismal November days here in Edinburgh, with wet leaves everywhere and the air turning to mist in the river valleys. But of course when you're writing you can make the weather do anything you want - I've chosen to inflict Scottish summer on my characters with sudden bursts of rain and gales blowing up from nowhere. If I feel generous later on I will give them some sunshine.

I got both my story to an end and wordcount neatly past 50000 on Friday evening (51629 words according to official count), and continued with a short story I have had in my mind for some time - the main story was traditional fantasy, this is modern fantasy - and use it to boost Finland in our great word war against Sacramento region ( ;-) ). I presume I'm getting going with this and continue in December little by little.
