Does anyone write something other than zombies?

I am seriously plot-deprived. Always. But I can usually find a few suggestions each year in the "Adopt a Plot" thread. This year I find mostly zombies, alien worlds, romance between aliens and zombies and teenage angst between zombies and, you guessed it, aliens. Does anyone here write something else and have some unloved plot bunnies hanging about that you might be willing to share?

I don't always write about zombies. This is the first year that I'm trying a zombie novel. Last year was steampunk. The year before was urban fantasy.

Don't have any plot bunnies at the moment. Did you know the genre you wanted to write in? Fantasy, romance, paranormal, litfic?

Re: Does anyone write something other than zombies?

Zombies are kind of the flavour-of-the-month. :)

I decided on steampunk basically because I am re-writing a very old story that my father used to read to me as a child. I wanted to really twist it in a new direction, and at first thought about setting it in a present-day, urban environment and then decided that an alternate-world/steampunk treatment would be a lot more fun.

Also, I'd always intended this to be a fully illustrated novel, and steampunk suits my artwork.

I Thought I would try a "Who Done It".
This year for fun, I have set it in the just post world war two era to pick up on the restlessness of the returning soldiers to create the mild chaos I needed.
Very mainstream this time.

For you try being random:

Take a world history book and think of a number, open to that page, there is your era!

Roll the dice, the number on top is your number of Main Characters.

Get out the Thesaurus choose seven interesting words and start writing to include them in a story...a plot will grow.
Good Luck!

Well, I did have an idea for a zombie short-short story, but I can't imagine doing a whole novel about them. Hard to come up with anything new, zombies traditionally not having much personality and absolutely no social skills. Maybe a charm school or dating club for zombies??

I would love to help you out, but I have a hard enough time finding ideas for myself. I'm with you about the zombie, vampire thing. Not my genre. Don't read it, don't care.

You might try going to the library and reading newspaper headlines. That might spark something. Go to a bar or coffee shop and eavesdrop. Or, there are a lot of books about generating ideas. I know my library has one called "The Writer's Idea Book".

Good luck!

I have never written about zombies or vampires or even werewolves. Real people seem odd enough to me.

My main characters usually show up in my dreams, that's where I find them. Also other people's overheard cell phone conversations always contain juicy bits of dialgue prompts.

Take a good look at what you read most. Which genre? That might be a good jumping off place to start.

I'm with RutaBaker. Real people are odd enough for me, especially the ones in my stories.

When my children were small, my husband and I tag team parented rather than use daycare or after school care. This meant that I'd arrive home after a work shift to being essentially a single mom to two small girls. By the time they were ready for bedtime stories, I was tired.

I'd lie on the floor of their room with the lights out and tell them to give me three things. They could be objects, characters, locations. It didn't matter what. Then I'd spin them into a story.

The advantage? I could do it with my eyes closed.

You might want to try a variation on this. Far more interesting than beings that can't even manage to die properly.

I'm not into vampires, zombies, aliens, etc. either. My novel will be very firmly grounded in this world--more specifically, in the world I know-- as are the short stories I've written. I draw on my own experiences, get inspiration from my work, people I've known, my own life. If you're interested in doing mainstream or realistic fiction, there are plenty of potential stories all around you. Everyday, even seemingly humdrum life has dramatic potential.

I also find Zombies to be somewhat repetitive in that they are always pretty much the same monster. Unlike Vampires, which have been re-invented as sexy immortals with that one annoying flaw (you know that whole 'people are their food' thing).
I have been reading some indie fiction about Zombies and, although well written from a technical standpoint, the subject matter is still repetitive. Just kill off the last of these SOB's please.

Science fiction - and now Steampunk fiction, have an attraction since the author decides what is real within the confines of the plot.

Good Luck

Oh, and my plot involves the return of the Gods of ancient mythology to the modern world.

Core idea for my novel came from pulling out and looking at my (now) old copy of the Parinoia XP game. The proposal for the new complex for Apple that looked like a mother ship was most inspiration as I took the idea in a diferent direction with an "eye" phone and an "eye" pad (the eye represents the computer). Added a few characters and hopefully I have a novel.

I'm not doing a zombie novel. However, the idea of perhaps a ninja zombie intrigues me. Not as a novel . . . but heck! Ninja! And Zombie! Now that would be cool. Would it be a fast-moving, flesh eating, killing machine? Or a slow moving, highly ineffectual assassin?

Uhhh, as for plot stories . . . hope you find something that excites you. :-)

I think it's original. It's actually told from the point of view of the ghost, who has found out information about how the zombie apocalypse started and how they could deal with it. If only he could find a way to tell someone.

Guess there are mostly young writers here...maybe I'm just older than I think (HA).
I like treefrog's three things and make a story idea; I had to do that for a writing group, only it was 5 words. I ended up with a great short story about a talking elevator in a department store (remember those :-) who trapped an escaped parrot (from the pet department), etc. I still feel like I "know" the elevator when I get into one, like it might be a friend, LOL.

I'm trying to make my 200 years dead grand aunt "come to life" for myself; my vocation in retirement is genealogy and I've been fascinated for the last 30 years with the unmarried, childless, children of my ancestral trees and who they were. I'm married but have no children of my own and wonder about my "purpose" and whether some 2nd great grand niece in the future will be wondering about me :-)

Re: Does anyone write something other than zombies?

John opened the door and stepped out into the cold rain. He tried to hunch over to protect the newspaper he was carrying, but with the wind blowing like that, it was going to be unreadable by the time he got to his car, which was parked halfway up the block. John wasn't a zombie, or a vampire, or even a Goth. The Fates had cast him in a much more mundane role: divorced father of one son, who he dutifully cared for every other weekend, without any real enthusiasm. Sometimes he hoped that he would discover that he was a werewolf, and he made a point of going out into the night each time the skies were clear and there was a full moon, but so far, nothing. He was starting to suspect that such things were just the fantasies of people who were as bored as he was with their lives, but more willing to indulge in what they knew was not true.

He reached his car, climbed in, and shook the raindrops from his glasses. He looked up in the rearview mirror, hoping to see something other than his own face staring back at him. But there it was again, that constant reminder of who he really was, and what kind of world he lived in.

Does a girl's body invaded by a cordycep count? hm, it may count as a zombie but I'm not sure. No, on second thought she's alive while it inhabits her so it doesn't count. MWAHAHAHA.
excerpt: 'Anna knew that pain existed but she did not feel it. Pain was the sharp, reflected glints of light she saw as fish turned lazily in the shadows around her. She could hear dusty winged voices in the distance but they were only soft brown moths that played far above her in the twilight.'

No, it's not a comedy, although I'd love to write something along the level of Shaun of the Dead (which was a movie, but anyway). My novel does have ghosts, and romance, and deals with irretrievable loss and basic human fears. It's not what ya got; it's what ya do with it. I've read romance and lit fic whose characters have no more depth than most zombies, after all.

Goldberry, I like your excerpt.

And if a zombie novel is nothing more than a fun read, that's good, too. Novels are meant to entertain, after all.

But maybe next year I'll go back to one of my more serious works, about elves and dragons and wizards. And sword fights. Zombies aren't too adept with weapons.

zookeeper, surely by now you've developed thicker skin, or are you just messin' with us?

the title of this thread is, "Does anyone write something other than zombies?" not, if you write about zombies you are (insert whatever here)

i myself have no interest in reading or writing about zombies, any more than others have any interest in reading or writing about world war II (as i do) that's what's so great about writing--there's something for everyone, not better or worse, just different.

i've written about a girl in a coma, the IRA, yugoslavia in WW ll, a serial killer....but what underlies all of my stories are the twin aspects of guilt and redemption (yes, fallen away catholic here--in fact, almost a nun!)

this year i'm writing a modern day ghost story. i believe, if there are ghosts, then they are around for one of 3 reasons: to harm, to protect, or to find resolution. my ghost needs resolution and my protagonist is seeking redemption.

aside from the "everyone seems to be writing zombie stories" i've also noticed the extreme youth of the participants. in my county, the group looking to get together ranges from HIGH SCHOOL to mid-twenties. oh lordy!

In my own defense, I'm trying to do something different with zombies. The plot of "zombies are attacking and we have to blow them away" has been done and done and done.

The idea of the zombie, the mythos of the undead, or the walking dead, has been with us from time immemorial, so I think it does serve some kind of metaphorical purpose.

Anyway, they're fun. Next year, I'll probably write something different, but this year it's Zombie Apocalypse time!

Haha, zombies are fine! I doubt any will show up in my novel this year, although in a Castle of Wizards you never know.

If the OP was actually looking for plot ideas not involving zombies :) here are a few:

A novel about global income inequality and the Occupy Wall Street / Occupy Whatever movement(s). Pro or con or neither, however you want to approach it. Very timely! Which can be good or bad. I'm slightly regretting that I thought of this after starting what I've already started. :) I can imagine it being great fun to write, for instance, about an International Economic Secret Agent who goes around investigating and righting wrongs (or who works for the bad guys and is *causing* wrongs (or some of both)).

A steampunk (see above :) ) love story. Use some gender-pairing you've never written before for extra points!

California (say) vanishes, and people investigate and/or cope with the fact.

Domestic cats turn out to be members of an advanced alien race, who have been studying humanity for centuries, and are now ready to deliver their verdict on us (this would of course be Nonfiction!).

A puzzle fanatic wins the lottery and is now free to travel the world discovering the puzzles and riddles and mystery objects of other cultures, and either falls in love or discovers an Ancient Worldwide Secret, or both, depending on your taste.

Scientists create the first self-aware AI and it's... an apartment building! :)

Student idolized / has a huge crush on / falls in love with perfect-seeming teacher; a few years later student comes upon teacher again at a vulnerable time in both theirs lives; complications ensue.

There ya go! :)

Zookeeper, as well as anyone else doing NaNo, is brave to try something new. I'm never against reading something new and different and I'd definitely read an amusing zombie book. After writing and publishing several mystery books, I decided to write a western historical romance last year. Best move I ever made. I sold it to a publisher who has since bought another western romance from me. I know there aren't a lot of people who like westerns or romance, but enough do that they sell. Needless to say I'm writing a western historical romance again his year.

Let me know how the zombie turns out.

not zombies

Hi: I'm just a newbie & one with a narrow focus as well. What is of interest to me would be of little interest to most people probably. However, my "work" if you can call it that involves real honest to goodness human beings; no zombies, space aliens, time travelers, psychic murderers etc. etc. etc. One suggestion I could make is to look through some of the videos on YouTube. There is a great wealth of human interest stories there and, at least my experience has been that if you can identify an area of interest, by watching the videos users post on the topic, you begin to see patterns that, along with your own life experiences, can yield a wealth of story lines. Obviously my interest is in stories about real people, that hopefully "hit people where they live." This all of course takes some time, which is short now. Hopefully by now you have your topic anyway. But that would be one suggestion I could make for someone who is story line deprived.

Re: Does anyone write something other than zombies?

I'm writing what would be labeled a fantasy. The underlying premise deals with"liminality", being on the threshold of something or the space between "this & that". Like when a person has an important decision to make, I want to examine the place that exists before they decide which way to go.

By losing her cat and then searching for him in the forest, my MC comes across a mysterious threshold between this world and another, and because of this will discover her past and her future. There will be some magic, and an eternal creature that could be a god or just a long lost being from the distance past, that humans have forgotten and discarded. There's also an underlying environmental theme, about the battle between the preservation or destruction of natural world.

Anyway, that's the road map, I'm trying to follow, I just hope my MC agrees!

I don't like zombies - even in good fiction. I mean who wants to kiss someone that drips flesh and body parts?

But I do have supernatural elements in most of my longer pieces. (and even some of my shorter pieces). This year I am writing about were-wolves sort of, but I like to use tarot and runes too. And some shaman elements. One year I wrote norse-fantasy. I have a book in the works that is about were-bears.

When it comes to zombies, vampires, etc., I like to quote the poet Billy Collins. He's talking about his dad sitting up in his grave over something or other. His dead mom says to his dead dad, "Lie back down." I love that.

I do like a good ghost story. Do ghosts qualify as dead or undead?

I think that my idea for a zombie story would be rather tech oriented. Imagine getting a hold of one of those REALLY big dump trucks, the kind that make a pickup truck look like a Tonka Toy, and reinforcing it, perhaps even adding some sort of fusion reactor as a power supply.

I have several types of Zombies, but it's the HUMANS you have to really watch out for! I have some ghosts too, just as incidental characters. Lots of voodoo and magic and miracles of chemistry. It's NOT an apocolypse, more of a satire on social structure and morality.

You can tell that I'm over 50 - I previewed a post, then lost it somewhere out there. Here goes, again.

I like reading mysteries, but can't write serious ones. All my mysteries degenerate into black humor. So Im writing satirical mysteries. This one's a continuation of last year's. It's politically incorrect, involves a drug cartel, lawyers, Patagonia, good looking and bad looking people, Polish food, and biometrics.

But, I don't do zombies - yet.

Re: Does anyone write something other than zombies?

Nobody'll believe it, but there's actually a lot you can do with zombies. In my zombie novel, the zombies are sort of a McGuffin. I'm exploring things like grief, reactions to tragedy, human selfishness, true love, and how humans behave in a global crisis. And I have zombies! What could be better? I'm having fun, and I like the story.

I wrote a mystery several Nanos ago, which was kind of out of my comfort zone. I never did anything with the novel, and I'm still on the fence about whether to try mysteries again. The three urban fantasies I did (all part of a series) are finished in first draft.

My personal goal this year was to finish the entire draft of this novel, but right now I'm happy just to be back on schedule.

Re: Does anyone write something other than zombies?

Except for an old short story by Anthony Boucher about a youngish college instructor who suddenly finds he is a werewolf and the problems this causes in his life (a thoughtful, surprising, fun story), I haven't indulged in the genre much (I did like the earlier years of the Buffy TV series because they were more tongue-in-cheek and fun). One book that continually inspires me is Peter Hoeg's A Quiet Girl. Very unusual book that has thriller elements, magical realism, mystery, romance, and ethical/philosophical/spiritual issues all rolled into one challenging and interesting story. I don't have this much genius, but I like to hold this book up to myself as an ideal to at least think about.

In the meantime, I have the usual mystery cum romance cum fantasy setting (I think....I'm way behind and don't quite know where I'm headed).

My first attempt at writing was a sort of variation on Charles Bronson in Death Wish - an average office type with the same motivation as Bronson/Batman etc but with no finance, superpowers, military training or anything.
Just an inept vigilante type who blunders around with some accidental success, becomes a suspect for a murder he didn't commit and gets more involved than he wants to be with an amorous neighbour.
It has none of the things you mention and murdering people with whom you have no link should be easy if you think about- until you do actually think about it.

Anyone who is unfamiliar -- well, google steampunk, you'll get hits galore. Especially fun to do this with "images". From what I've seen the new Three Musketeers movie is going to be tres silly, but will have fun steampunkishness going on.

Jayneypops, I just looked it up in the Urban Dictionary because I didn't know either.

Quoted: Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting. It could be described by the slogan "What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner." It includes fiction with science fiction, fantasy or horror themes.

Strange. I still don't think I know what it is!!

Update: I finally realized my novel is going to be a satire. It wasn't really all that science fiction, didn't have enough horror, and definitely no zombies, and there wasn't much suspense, so satire it is. So things like this makes sense (note I don't have anyone yet ready to actually say these things.

"According to Four Radical Rules by Monica Lewinsky, revolutions should be done, 'top down, bottom up and inside out.'"

"What does that mean?"

"It means we first make you think too much. The we make you run around too much. Then we poison your Bouncy Bubble Beverage so you throw up; that's the inside out part."

I can imagine the frustration of the ghost who is trying to get this information into the right hands, and the further frustration of the person or persons who are successfully contacted when they try to pass the information on.

Wonderful storyline.

I've enjoyed Phil Foglio for years. Some of his illustrations were used in Robert Lynn Aspirin's Skeeve and Aahz series.

Sounds like a great idea.

Zombie idea I kicked around:

What if you found out the best Zombie fighter in your group of survivors was a vampire. He can't feed on the zombies and he has a vested interest in keeping you all alive.
Do you kill the vampire and lose one of your best assets?
How do you feel about being a food source in the long term?
Sure beats being a quick one time snack to the zombies but still.

What? Seriously??
Take a trip over to zombiehunters.org and look around the forums until you find the fiction threads. There you will see about seven pages of member fiction, much of which is very well written.
Write whatever the hell you want to write about. You might be the next Clive Barker or Thomas Harris for Pete's sake.
Who said anything to get you to leave the forum?
What have I missed?

Sit your ass back down and write about the damn Zombies! It's NaNoWriMo for cryin' out loud.

Hi S
Just to reasure you, mine is a romantic comedy 4 MCs in their 50's - Basically 4 girlfriends from school who have kept in touch over the years and they all get together for a Grand Girls Holiday to celebrate their 50th birthdays - on a cruise ship!

Unfortunately Im woefully behind and no chance of catching up for Nano but I will continue till its done.

Well done to everybody on their word counts

Just a note: I started writing fantasy when I was in my early 20s so about 30 years ago... So this is not a new idea for me. I am so surprised at folks who write supernatural who do it because it is popular and not because it is something they are drawn to write. Only a small portion of people read it when I was interested (read Andre Norton's witch world when I was thirteen).

I am not complaining because I love the amount of fantasy, etc that I can find to read now. I just miss the excitement of the first writers -

Cynthus - I LOVE the idea of a romance with older characters - about bloody time, right? I loved the Notebook, because it kept the romance alive well into their old age.

May I suggest a piece of advice someone gave me long, long ago? When asked how he (male writer) could write women's parts so well and believably he answered, "I write them as if they were men, then change the pronouns. People all feel the same inside. The trick is to make what they feel, believable. So if you would feel it, they would feel it."
