I'm 71 for god's sake! How old are some of you other old geezers. This is my first NaNo ex[perience....let's hope my creative faculties haven't atrophied. I'm about to find out I guess.

I'll be 57 next Saturday. Although I've done a half dozen Nanos, I only won once, in 2002. This year I'm determined to win with a western I'm planning on writing. Good luck to us all!

Sixty and I am tired of this researching and planning. Can't we get on with it already?

Dinah Meitzen
57016 words so far Winner!

I know exactly what you mean about that searching and planning. I'm 64 and decided to just plow into it and let the words fall out of my head onto the keyboard. Anytime I start searching or researching and planning, I find myself stuck in a map or in an outline way longer than I originally intended. So to heck with it. I'm just writing. Good luck to you!

OK, I'm 66, and so what if I am? I love being 66, even if my body sometimes disagrees. I taught school before I retired six years ago, have done and won NaNo the past two years, and published a book this March. Do I feel younger? You bet.

64 here; and I still haven't been able to load a photo. I'm technically challenged; however, I'm chock full of ideas so my words have been flowing forth. I've gotten myself and my friends into one heckuva mess and I'm now trying to write us out. this is my first NaNoWriMo. My daughter suggested we "do" it together. She's 44 and lives in Tennessee. I'm loving having this project in common with her. It kind of reaches out and pulls Tennessee closer to Texas. Yea, US!

I'm 55 but I don't know if that means anything.. But I also can't upload a photo. I have an active save button but a greyed out upload button. Any advice would be appreciated..

Dinah Meitzen

Good for you! You inspire me. I'm 64; this is my first time at NaNoWriMo! I'm having a great time just letting all the words do their thing! See you at the finish line!

I'm 71 too. How did that happen? I look 71, act 71 and think like a mature adult. I shuffle around, complain about my creaky joints but can write up a storm and am looking for writing buddies. Able to get the words down for NaNo but lacking the magic, the poetry I want in my writing which is largely about wonderful natural settings. Can anybody help me? PENELOPE GHANA

I am 59. Had to stop and think about it... where do the years go. This is my third NaNo and I have won once. Good luck everyone!

@ Alirtle: You're way ahead of me. I must be failing at geezerness; I don't even have 15K yet. On the other hand, my daughter is going on 16 and she's got almost twice as many words (but not as many as you).

I'm 63. This is my first NaNo, and I probably won't make it to 50,000 this year. I'll be ready next year and do all of the research before Nov. 1 so I can focus on writing in November.

Congratulations on your win! You made me feel young (at age 51) but you also encouraged me about doing fun and challenging stuff at any age. If your faculties have "atrophied" at 54,874 WC, you must have been a bottle rocket at my age :)
This was my first NaNo too, and it made me feel a lot better about Geezerhood!

Baby boomer born in July 1947. Been writing since pre-teen days, actually started with poems and very short stories in third grade. By the time I reached HS - (as written in my senior write up interview) - teachers were assigning term papers each quarter - with a minimum number of pages (not including title or bibliography) and then to me - a Maximum! HEHE- been writing ever since as time permits and I love it! Could be why my college major was English - comp, creative writing emphasis.. :) HUGS to all. I started doing NaNo challenge in 03 and to date won every year. Truly LOVE the challenge and so good to see more joining in.

According to my birth certificate, I'm 63. On sunny autumn days when the leaves are raked up into piles that invite me to jump into them, my mind is only 9 or 10. However, my joints, especially after raking up all those leaves, insist that I'm closer to 90 or so.

Kimmer

I'm with you, 63. 1948 was a great year, eh? Good luck with your NaNo this year! Think I'll go jump in some leaves and let my younger husband do the raking!

I'm three months away from 75. Alirtie, there are no age limits on creativity. I won my last two NaNos, have written and published two novels in the last year, and am revising and editing last year's NaNo novel.

Just pace yourself. It's easy to burn out by the second week if you're not careful. My first successful year nearly killed me, but last year was fairly relaxed.

57, turning 58 in December. One nice thing about fields like writing is that there is no upper age limit, and no one can force you to retire.

Dinah Meitzen

Amen to that, Zookeeper! I'm 64 and doing the NaNoWriMo thing for the first time. My daughter challenged me. So she's in it from Tennessee; and I'm in it from Texas! Yea, US! Good luck to you!

I was 75 on June 9. Most of the time I feel like I'm 35 or like Reey, above, maybe 90. I did NaNo in '07 and won then I finally had to see a doctor. Had not done that for about 25 years. Now they have me taking pills for this and that and I think the meds are taking the edge off my imagination. I don't have the same drive to "get it done". But I'm just stubborn enough to keep trying.

I'm 62. I started out fine in 09 and 10. But November seems a bad month for me. In November 09 I wound up in hospital to have emergency gallbladder surgery. Very little writing done. November 10 saw me back in hospital for another emergency - a stress test and angiogram resulted. A little more writing done, but still didn't win.

This year I am starting on a new project and, by gum, November ain't getting a piece of me this year!

I turned 58 in August. That's my chronological age. The mental age varies according to what side of the bed I got out on, who I have to interact with, whether I remember my pills, the weather, if my computer is performing well, my grandchildren are visiting, et cetera. Let's just call it a lucky dip...

Yeah, mentally I feel like I'm somewhere between 32 and 42. My left knee seems convinced that it's a nonagenarian, though.

I think somewhere else I posted that I don't think of myself as a geezer. It conjures up images for me of a cranky old lady sitting in a rocking chair that absolutely no one can ever make her happy or smile. Well, that's not me. I do have my cranky old days, but luckily my husband who is never cranky can snap me out of it.
Anyway, I'm 57, but I can't really believe I'm that old. After all in court your birthday is technicall hearsay evidence. I feel somewhere between 18 and 30. But I'm proud to say I'm 57, in good health and hopefully lots of years ahead of me. My inspiration, I think, for really getting serious about my writing I think comes from Michener. I think I remember somewhere he started writing when he was in his 50s. So the way I see it, I have another 50 years to become a best seller author and hit a talk show pitching my book.

Funny, isn't it? I remember my dad at 76 sitting at our dining room table with his head in his hands mumbling, "In my head I'm only 22." I now know how he felt.

I'l always remember my great aunt when she was in her 70s that she said she still felt in her 20s, which was a bit of an eye-opener to me at the time (I was a mere teen). Even though I'm 'only' 50 I now kinow what she means.

Fifty-six and counting. This is my fifth year with Nanowrimo, and while I haven't "won" yet, three of the four years I ended up with a story that I went on to publish. Yay! This year I'm determined to get all the way to 50,000 words. Good luck to all of us "fogies" (as my father would say) and happy writing!

I’m 65. Whee, I can’t believe it. I haven’t mastered youth yet. I keep waiting for that wisdom that is supposed to come with age but it still eludes me. Shouldn’t I know by this point what I want to be when I grow up? So, while I’m waiting for insight I’m going to join for a second NaNo.

I'll be 55 in about three weeks. My vet informed me that my dog is now 70 in dog years and then said he's 40 years older than me! Ha! He was probably just working his customer relations schtick but I'll take it anyway!
