I'm 71 for god's sake! How old are some of you other old geezers. This is my first NaNo ex[perience....let's hope my creative faculties haven't atrophied. I'm about to find out I guess.

According to my birth certificate, I'm 63. On sunny autumn days when the leaves are raked up into piles that invite me to jump into them, my mind is only 9 or 10. However, my joints, especially after raking up all those leaves, insist that I'm closer to 90 or so.

I'm three months away from 75. Alirtie, there are no age limits on creativity. I won my last two NaNos, have written and published two novels in the last year, and am revising and editing last year's NaNo novel.

Just pace yourself. It's easy to burn out by the second week if you're not careful. My first successful year nearly killed me, but last year was fairly relaxed.

I was 75 on June 9. Most of the time I feel like I'm 35 or like Reey, above, maybe 90. I did NaNo in '07 and won then I finally had to see a doctor. Had not done that for about 25 years. Now they have me taking pills for this and that and I think the meds are taking the edge off my imagination. I don't have the same drive to "get it done". But I'm just stubborn enough to keep trying.

I'm 62. I started out fine in 09 and 10. But November seems a bad month for me. In November 09 I wound up in hospital to have emergency gallbladder surgery. Very little writing done. November 10 saw me back in hospital for another emergency - a stress test and angiogram resulted. A little more writing done, but still didn't win.

This year I am starting on a new project and, by gum, November ain't getting a piece of me this year!

Let's just call it a lucky dip...

I think somewhere else I posted that I don't think of myself as a geezer. It conjures up images for me of a cranky old lady sitting in a rocking chair that absolutely no one can ever make her happy or smile. Well, that's not me. I do have my cranky old days, but luckily my husband who is never cranky can snap me out of it.
Anyway, I'm 57, but I can't really believe I'm that old. After all in court your birthday is technicall hearsay evidence. I feel somewhere between 18 and 30. But I'm proud to say I'm 57, in good health and hopefully lots of years ahead of me. My inspiration, I think, for really getting serious about my writing I think comes from Michener. I think I remember somewhere he started writing when he was in his 50s. So the way I see it, I have another 50 years to become a best seller author and hit a talk show pitching my book.

I'm one of the younger geezers at 52. I decided to give Nanowrimo a try this year because of my third grade teacher. She encouraged me to give writing a try. All through my grade school years she kept on me to try writing all because of a story I wrote in her class. After I got out of school, like most other people, my life revolved around trying to make a living. I decided that this year I would actually write something. It may be the biggest piece of trash written during Nanowrimo but at least I will have given it a shot.

Like GHK, I'm sneaking in early. I'll be 49 in two months. I feel out of place in the 30s and 40s forum. Maybe because my husband and all of our friends are between 50 and 60. I hope you don't mind.

This is my sixth NaNo, after five "wins". I still have not decided on which story to write. I am going back and forth between

1. The final novel in the series written in the other NaNos, Contemporary fantasy, or fabulism
2. Historical, based on the cholera epidemic of 1965
3. Go rogue and complete the text book I am writing, which would be great because my target market people tell me it will sell very quickly....and my horse needs shoes...

Outlines are ready for each. I'll probably choose at the last minute, amusing fantasy, pendantic history (I am a historian), mind numbing technical writing...which actually is pretty fun...

Wish me luck!

Not as old as I look, nor as young as I feel :) Actually turned 54 in years alive back in August. But, as someone else said, how old I am in my mind depends on a number of factors. When I'm writing, I feel ageless. When I'm babysitting my two grandkids, well, lets just say I know why mother nature intended people to have children young. When they leave I feel at least 80 for the rest of the day. Most of the time I feel like a thirtysomething in a much older body.

Re: How old are you?

I'll be 57 on November 23rd. I don't feel anything like what I imagined 57 would feel like, because I don't have enough time to stop and see how I feel. I work full-time as a Hospice Nurse, and I have 6-year-old twins who started Kindergarten at a local Magnet school. And, this particular school demands 18 hours of volunteer work per year if you want your child to stay in it. Not to mention that I have a side business as a Hollywood Script Reader/Analyst. Sheww!!

I'm a Screenwriter by trade - Go Scriptfrenzy! - but I've had this killer idea for a series of 5 books that has been simmering in my head for almost 10 years. I dug through my closet and found the two, very thick notebooks, that contain the 3 years worth of research I did for that book series. I dusted them off and have spent the last month reading through them and setting up an outline on my Scrivener program. Now, I'm ready to write.

Hopefully, I can find the time...

I am 55 as of October 22nd.
I can't say that I feel better than I ever have in my life, but I can say that I have never been more at peace with life and I might even describe myself as 'happy'. I always thought happiness was an illusion, I guess that was the cynic in me. I think I killed that guy off once and for all though.

I'm 54...What?! 54? Yes, as of June. But...hmmm, ok, then I guess I now qualify as a geezer. This is my first NaNo and I have been planning like crazy since August and I just want to get on with it...except ... I'm scared to death.

Glad to see that these feelings appear to be normal here.

Re: How old are you?

50yrs 4months & 5days, unless you're reading this tomorrow in which case I will be slightly older (and, of course, if you're reading this yesterday I was slightly younger & bravo, the time-travellings coming along a treat!)

This is my second attempt at NaNo (completed it in 2008.) I’m in the middle of editing my first novel but due to work commitments I can’t really progress it much further until next year, therefore I intend to use NaNo to maintain a daily ‘unpolished’ word count. I’m also intending to write something completely different compared to the fiction I usually produce.

My attempt at NaNo will be a comedy novel. It's a bit sketchy at the moment & I'm deliberately not doing too much planning (I suspect most of the months activity will be a free-write rather than a structured novel)

A Little Thing Like Death (Very much a working title)

At the grand reopening of a renovated hotel the guy hired to act as a ‘meet and greet’ Bell Boy for the evening (a failed actor cum scriptwriter taking on any acting job he can find) is approached by a stunning girl with an unusual complaint.

She complains that she was murdered in one of the hotel rooms 100 years previously and that nobody has ever been caught for the crime.

A select organisation of ghosts are living among us doing ordinary jobs and everyday activities. Their primary role is to maintain the equilibrium between life and death and ensure the truth about the afterlife is never revealed to the living.

When they hear that the murder victim is about to ‘out’ herself to the Bell Boy they realise they need to silence her and banish her back to the afterlife.

(To steal from another thread, there may be a Zombie or two lurking in this novel but they'll more than likely be disguised as a TV Celebrity, book publisher or bank manager.)

Only a few hours till 'the off' so good luck everyone.

Re: How old are you?

63 for me, and I remember much, still. So I guess the basic hard drive is still intact. They say to write from what you know, but I don't think I want to open up Pandora's box and write from some of the stuff of the 60's. (there are still some films about those years that are just to hard to watch.) I have been thinking about doing a fiction piece of memorabilia and pad the account with fiction, a touch of steam punk ( watch the language buster), and just have a good time.
I do know the coffee mug is empty so that needs to be filled. The plot for this month is less than full. I just need to step up to the compost pile of life and flip over one spade full, and I will have the plot.

Phoebe. Some things I remember and others are less available. Thank goodness for my moleskine and ball point pen.

I started programming computers in 1976, so I prefer to calculate my age in hexadecimal: 35. Of course, that didn't work out so well 6 years ago when I was 2F.

When I'm forced to count like everyone else, I'm 53, but for numbers that big, I generally let a computer do the math...

Re: How old are you?

I am 60 and feel better than when I was 50. My left ankle is almost 14 months old.

I have been around NaNo since 2003. I got started a couple of years but crashed and burned after a few thousand words.

After a little planning I succeeded in 2009 when I was recuperating from my second ankle surgery. One of the local Starbucks has a couple of chaise longues. Sitting in one of those with my legs stretched out made it possible for me to write comfortably. Last year I started walking again in November after my left ankle was replaced, but couldn't walk much yet. Forced sitting works wonders for my NaNo success.

This year, with a new ankle and NO pain, I am a walking fool which means I am walking to Starbucks and Caribous far and wide and loving every minute of my freedom. But this does not bode well for NaNo success.

I'm 71 will be 72 in December and I've been more productive since i retired at 62 than I've ever been. I've had 8 books published and 3 scheduled for publication in 2012 so far. Have 4 queries out so hope to have others accepted. Have won NaNo the years I've taken part and plan to win again this year. Got an invitation this morning to speak at a library function a hundred miles away on November 17 so will have to work that in and still keep up with NaNo. (Don't have a laptop so writing on the road is impossible.) By the way, last years NaNo writing, turned into a 80,000 novel and has been accepted for publication by Whiskey Creek Press. My motto is put God first, family second and writing third. So far, it's working.

I'm 54 and will be 55 in January, but I tell waitresses I am in my 55th year of life so I can get a senior meal at a senior price and they tell me not to worry, that they won't check my ID, so I guess I look old enough. My bit of picture is 5.5 years old.

This is year 5 of NaNo for me and I will win again. Just writing for the fun of it this time. I have to, I can barely remember my characters from one day to the next.

No one has asked me that question except musically at early birthday parties. But I love telling people how old I am just becasue I am so happy to be here! I'm 60 and this is my fifth try and I finished twice. Good times! I see there's lots of talk about creaky joints. Yes, I can relate. But for the record, my joints don't creak. They are fairly silent. They hurt sometimes and say to me,"Get thee to the healthclub!" And so I duly go and do my water aerobics. Time to go write!

It depends on what day it is. Today was a "visit the dentist day", and I was 10. I was also 20 minutes late and he said he'd have to reschedule me. Oh, that was TOO bad! lol . . . I told you I felt 10 today.

I agree with reey. My birth certificate shows me to be 50. I keep saying someone gave me the wrong one! I feel I am in my late 20's and probably act younger. Based on what others say to me, I look younger. They cannot believe I have a 25 y.o. son and 21 y.o daughter. This is my 2nd year doing NaNo and I think I have a good story. I am encouraged by reading that the over 50 crowd does better. Happy writing to us all!

c apple, i think we'd get along. in august we--spouse and 4 adult kids and their spouses and 5 grandkids-- had a "fam jam" with 4 guitars (5 if you count the acoustic), a bass, full drum set, 2 keyboards (and a piano), a mike and can't even count how many amps. since i play nothing, i babysat the little ones--when they weren't trying to jam with the rest! lol

it was AWESOME! (okay, what am i, 12? geesh)

Sounded like a great time. I began learning guitar, but have so much else to do. Wish I could make it a priority.

Music does keep us young. Last night I heard a snippet of the song, "It's Magic," by Pilot. It really took me back. I haven't been listening much to music this Nano. If I do it's likey to be Harry Connick Jr, Mel Torme and some instrumental.

I hope you are enjoying your writing. Mine is pretty much pure enjoyment for my mind.

I'm 56 and a bit and having just watched my youngest daughter prevaricate, use displacement activity and generally muck about to avoid doing an essay for Uni until the VERY LAST MINUTE I see her as me in another quarter of a century or so. I'm a little over 4,000 words in so am already falling behind schedule but, in my defence, youngest asked me to proof read her essay, then I had to walk the dogs and then I had to clean the kitchen floor because the dogs got so muddy and once the floor was clean I had to do all the cupboards too 'cos the floor showed them up and here I am surfing the forums (fora?) instead of writing... plus ça change

50. 4th Nano. And using writing to take my mind off of my disease. Been able to stave it off for almost 9 years. ;-)

As for publishing, I have one of my nano's published on Kindle - Erika T. Red. I am an indie author, so do my own digital publishing plus I have several poems and articles on various websites - Helium, Associated Content, and RedGage. Before I became ill, I was going the traditional route by getting my poems and stories published in literary mags - such as Acumen and Bibliophilos. After my illness, I decided to go for it. I don't have the time or patience to seduce an agent. So here I am.

I love that story, Erica in the Novel! The same thing happened several times with my grandmother and me. She caught sight of her reflection in storefront windows, pointed and said "Big Jim, who is that? I think I know her!" Gawd, I miss her! I turned 56 in July. Been retired for two years, left the country of my birth and enjoying the life of an expatriate English teacher. Like most folks here, my health fluctuates from day to day and the joints spend a great deal of time bitching and complaining. Want to know what has changed my life for the better? All my new friends in my new "hometown" are at least 30 years younger than me! They brought me back to life!

64 here; and I still haven't been able to load a photo. I'm technically challenged; however, I'm chock full of ideas so my words have been flowing forth. I've gotten myself and my friends into one heckuva mess and I'm now trying to write us out. this is my first NaNoWriMo. My daughter suggested we "do" it together. She's 44 and lives in Tennessee. I'm loving having this project in common with her. It kind of reaches out and pulls Tennessee closer to Texas. Yea, US!

I know exactly what you mean about that searching and planning. I'm 64 and decided to just plow into it and let the words fall out of my head onto the keyboard. Anytime I start searching or researching and planning, I find myself stuck in a map or in an outline way longer than I originally intended. So to heck with it. I'm just writing. Good luck to you!

I'm 51, but today I'm feeling 35 - there's something about hitting a personal word count goal during NANO that reverses the aging process. It's amazing! This is my 3rd NANO and the first one where I've been soooooo close. First time 10,000 or so words, second time...um...let's just say less than 10,000 words and leave it at that. But some little bug with really sharp teeth has gotten hold of me and won't let go. I think I'll keep him. Let's hope 3rd times a charm.

Good luck everyone!

Re: How old are you?

50. Had to look it up. It's odd how I've always been thirty-ish, and everyone around me is getting older! In fact, this spring, I upgraded to Rocking Chair two-point-oh - a dirtbike - and passed the motorcycle training course. Great fun.

Rambling on, Where I come from, a geezer is always a very elderly male, and is a (mostly) affectionate term. Never even considered it as a term for women, and probably never will.

It's great to see so many 50+ people involved in NaNoWriMo. This is my second. I won last year, and was pleasantly surprised to find out how much of it is worth keeping. This year's project is to continue the tale.

Best to you all. 50K or not, we're all winners. We're writing, and that's what counts (hah).

Ok, ok. I'm actually more a Sputnik child, just making my entrance fashionably late 3 days later. 54 and a month, and this year I have generally felt every. Single. Moment of it. However, internally I never progressed much past about, oh, say seventeen. And at this late date I have no intention of doing so.

Re: How old are you?

Turned 60 a couple of months ago. It seems like a major seismic shift. I look at the number on the screen - 6-0 - and think I must be making this up.

This is my second Nano. I won last year - with 62,000 words. Too bad I can't apply those extra 12,000 to my 2011 total! This year's looking a bit iffy, halfway there atnd it's already Nov. 27. Oh well, I decided a few days ago that if 60 is the new 40, 25,000 can be the new 50,000.

I do have a pretty good excuse, though, really I do (even better than the dog ate my manuscript): I just finished chemotherapy 2 weeks ago.

Yeah, I looked at my word count and figured it was about time to "play the C-card." Doesn't NaNoWriMo give bonus points for Writing While Chemo-Brained?

Good for you! I think that you get to transfer those 12,000 words, no problem! Of course, they may change your story some but that's what editing is all about! I'm 60 also and I'm all about embracing being a "sexagenarian." I think it has a nice ring to it. I think you should give yourself bonus points because Chemo-brain is right up there. Besides, I'm sure your words are twice as potent and that should give you your last 25,000 right there! Best of luck to the finish line!

Baby boomer born in July 1947. Been writing since pre-teen days, actually started with poems and very short stories in third grade. By the time I reached HS - (as written in my senior write up interview) - teachers were assigning term papers each quarter - with a minimum number of pages (not including title or bibliography) and then to me - a Maximum! HEHE- been writing ever since as time permits and I love it! Could be why my college major was English - comp, creative writing emphasis.. :) HUGS to all. I started doing NaNo challenge in 03 and to date won every year. Truly LOVE the challenge and so good to see more joining in.

I'm 58 but retired as multiple sclerosis made it hard to meet my deadlines as an equestrian journalist. But as time my own (and the MS side effects time) I can write whenever I feel ok - usually 2,000+ words per day OR 6hrs max of plotting

Re: How old are you?

I am 58 as of today, and I'm feeling every moment of it. The last couple of days I've been doing house chores. I caulked beneath the window sills inside to keep the drafts out, and yesterday I taped insulation on the inside of one of my bedroom windows. I'm trying to keep the heat in. My furnace gave up the ghost three years ago, and I can't afford to get it replaced. I have a $400 electricity bill to pay, and I still can't keep the place anywhere close to room temperature. I still have three more windows upstairs to insulate, but I'm stiff and sore and my back hurts.

And I'm beginning to wonder if anyone will ever hire someone my age. I've been out of work for four years, and I've run out of money.

Wow! What a way to celebrate your birthday! I wish you well. I don't know where in Colorado you are, but it has certainly been cold these nights. It's a good thing you have cats. They are good for a lot of things including keeping your feet warm.

Keep your chin up and hopefully a writing job will come through or maybe Santa may even stuff your stocking with a new furnace! Well, you never know.

Blessings on your day!

Zookeeper ----perhaps you might locate a temporary volunteer job and help others during these holidays; and that might lead you to permanent employment. It always helps to get out and view the world through a different perspective. Good luck to you; may God bless. Merry Christmas!

I always say that the young are always immortal. Until they're not.

My lifelong ambition has always been to be a famous science fiction writer. I'm very exasperated that that hasn't happened yet.
